Has anyone else read these? YA "Lois in high school" made me expect some sort of Sweet Valley High kind of thing, but I read the free short story teasers, and I really liked them. It's actually a very strong take on Lois Lane's character. If any of you are fans of Kristen Bell's Veronica Mars, there's a very similar vibe, although of course the Veronica Mars show went deeper into some territory than I expect a YA series to. "Veronica Mars in a world with superpowers and super science" is a pretty good selling point. I'm only just starting the first novel, but I still feel very confident recommending this series on the strength of the short stories.

The author is Gwenda Bond. The two free short stories are "Cloudy with a Chance of Destruction" and "A Real Work of Art." The first novel is "Freefall."

In general, the Superman franchise has done better in prose than any other comics franchise I can think of. The first 1942 novel that introduced Smallville and the Kents is definitely one of the most impactful "Other Media" stories for any comics property, the Maggin novels, Stern's Death and Life adaptation, Tom De Haven's "It's Superman! (one of the best Superman stories I've ever read, period), and now these. Yeah, there's been some forgettable or bad stuff in there too, but that's a lot of excellent prose right there.

BF, I've found both "Freefall" and "Double Down" in my awesome public library circuit. Will read and comment when I can. Thanks for the heads-up.

BF, have you finished "Freefall" yet?

I have to confess that, while I really enjoyed the first few pages, and found it a good introduction to a solid interpretation of Lois, I lost enthusiasm once the villains were introduced and then the other junior reporters...I dunno, maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it, or something like that.

Depending on your review, I might give it a second chance.

I got distracted. But now that I will no longer be able to listen to audiobooks while driving in my down time at work, I will get back to it. I read the opening bits, but still hadn't gotten to the main plot, though I imagine creepy mind control kid is involved.

If you didn't read the short stories, I'd give them a shot. They are free on Kindle.
