Wow! Interesting story, with some timely commentary about refugees and racism, and some great Legion action. With a team including heavy hitters like Mon-El, Ultra Boy and Laurel Gand, you still manage to find a way to make Triplicate Girl and Shrinking Violet (and Invisible Jacques) relevant to the combat!

AWESOME comic, Drake! Your action scenes flow smoothly. Great teamwork too, and you made the "weaker" Legionnaires like Lu and Vi and Jacques relevant despite having the "big three" + Wildfire along. Nice job giving Brin and Blok some lines too, despite not getting any action. Garth contributing leadership and Dawny contributing rescue ops were great touches too.

And top-notch art, of course!

And I really loved the roll call blurbs! Snappy and witty!

More praise here, that was fun Drake. Nice clean art and a blast of action that is obviously leading to the main story - very good!

My fave line - Dawnstar - it's her sky, you're just a tourist.

As said above, nice to see Lu, Vi and Jacques get their moments, as well as the heavey hitters.

Looking forward to more, more, more!

Legion Worlds NINE - wait, there's even more ongoing amazing adventures? Yup, and you'll only find them in the Bits o' Legionnaire Business Forum.

Thanks! While there will be no "Warden OMAC" series, this really is just the prelude to a much larger story. I have it pretty much written and the next two chapters have been roughed out. Hopefully I'll have time to finish the next installment before long...

Great work, Drake - and I especially enjoyed the descriptions of each hero. A villain with portal technology is a considerable menace I wonder if anyone else has that tech... Looking forward to future installments and thanks for sharing this!

I have to agree with everyone's comments this is a really cool.
You've given a fairly classic team with heavy hitters who get a good work out along with some weaker ones. Triplicate Girl's was my favorite.
I also like all the captions and how witty they are.

Dev-em? that seems like its going to spell some trouble for the Legion. I hope he's here to help as it sounds like the Breach Master isn't the end of this.
Great job!

Now that I have had a proper look...that was really fun! I really like your take on Shrinking Violet's costume and Brin's appearance, and I like all the identifying captions but "Invisible Kid: ...duh!" made me LOL laugh

How am I just finding this thread?

Great comic, Drake! With amazing art as always!

I especially loved the orange-skinned, yellow-domed, hate-filled villain! grin

Nice subtle redesign on some of the costumes too. I think you did a great job on keeping the Luornu's distinct, but not too distinct, with that little symbol change.

Is your comic set during any particular period? Or have you created your own continuity?

Since this is just for fun, I decided to take liberties with the continuity. I'm imagining it as roughly during the Baxter era, but with some continuity changes - mostly so I can shoe-horn in other characters from later incarnations. (like Laurel)

Thanks for the nice words guys - I am trying to get another installment out soon, but spare time is tough to find lately...

Hey Drake, this is ace!

I'm on the bus home after a very long day so will be quick. Love the opening double page spread - some great Easter eggs in the crowd, time trapper, hateface, Celeste, Nightwind, sensor, etc. Very cool. Also love power lass rather than monstress as I never understood a team that stands for championing diversity agreeing to that name.
Nice use of Tyroc, loved the two media talking heads giving different pov's, nice cameo by Rokk and Lydda's, and Lyle and Condo in the background. Brainy being conflicted over Laurel was sweet, and Mon talking about his emotions was a surprising treat.

My stop soon, gotta go. This is great.

I love your lineup! Gates, Dragonmagee, Kinetix, Monstress as Power Lass, and XS and Kid Quantum and Tyroc joining the classic lineup!

Tyroc has a great new costume

Nice Easter eggs, including Lyle and Condo among the retired Legion couples

LOLed at the realistic reactions from people on social media, including the reactions that mirror what some Legion fans say

Your Laurel Kent is snippy, interesting

Ohmigosh! I totally missed her! I love Diva Plavalaguna. Her little concert was one of my favorite parts of that movie. (And I still have her song on my regular playlist!)

Since you used question marks for some, I will guess you weren't sure:
-- Not Zymyr, just someone of his race
-- YES to Ben Pares - I always liked him and wished he would have popped up again!
-- Yes to Spider-Girl, though I supposed she's "Wave" with the blue hair wink
And the rest were on the money. smile

Thanks so very, very much for these, I really miss the Legion these days. You should make many more much faster.

Thanks! And believe me, if I didn't have a day job and a marriage to attend to I'd be on this 24/7. This is already mostly what I do during my spare time. Doing this actually satisfies some of my own frustration at not having any quality Legion books to read right now. One of my biggest regrets about not being able to get this out faster is that some of the things I have planned out I'm already seeing in other places and now it'll seem like I'm ripping them off!.... I guess there's only so much originality to go around. wink

In terms of the crowd scene, I wasn't expecting people to get non-Legion characters like Dekko, ("Zot!") Meico ("Alien Legion") or Princess Ariel and Ookla the Mok ("Thundarr the Barbarian") but I'm surprised nobody mentioned Arm Fall-Off Boy! I guess when he's not pulling of his limb he's not so noticeable... smile

More pages soon (soon-ish....) wherein the real threat reveals itself!

Bloody hell! I didn't see that coming!

Another great section of your story (and others, just spotted the credits, well done to all) that included just about everything a fan could ask for - new Legionnaires, allies helping out, a mystery villain, computo/baby Validus, humour, passion... oh, and the death of a Legionnaire!

Splendid stuff Drake and everyone else involved.

Am looking forward to seeing where you go next with this, how Atmos fits into it and whether or not Jo is really gone.

Sweet lineup, and I love your insignia designs! Gates' is quite creative, and I like the one you're using for Tyroc.

And who do you have between Colossal Boy and Dawnstar? Is it Comet Queen? It doesn't seem to be anyone in your group shot during the induction...

Can I just say I'm tickled pink again at your lineup. Interesting choice having Lu and Chuck still active, with Cos retired.

LOL at Star Boy being introduced as "Dream Girl's boyfriend". Equality! Also her anger at Atmos... or is it? You certianly have me thinking.

That was a shocking - and effective - display of just how far the Red Lanterns' influence has spread! Kudos for not picking a "usual" Legionnaire to die, I think Garth and Gim and Dirk for example have died too many times in too many realities, at least Jo is a new choice. Though I'm also not quite sure he IS dead yet.

And now I'm thinking back to the previous installments. Was Laurel Kent also being affected by the anger of the Red Lanterns?

Woo, thirty-five Legionnaires! Awesome to see a big team, and I love seeing Laurel Kent (in the poncho, no less!) make the big time! Other Reboot characters, like Kid Quantum in the background, and Kinetix, Gates, Dragonmage and Monstress also being members of this otherwise classic-seeming team, is also cool.

You will see who that symbol represents on the next page (whenever I get to post it ;))

Thanks all for the nice words -- without commenting on stuff that's going to happen, there is a bunch of stuff that I've been throwing in here that will be paid off or developed later. (in some cases much later, but I'm working on it ;))

Meant to add, I loved the 'Five Minutes Later' in the style of Five Years Later with the star field pattern.

I read the C logo as Computo, as it appears to have circuit lines in it, though looking forward to finding out who you have planned Drake.

That's very nice of you, but most of those names are movie references and not actual people. Only one of the names there is "real." wink

Anyone recognize where I might have gotten that star-field pattern from? I didn't create it.... wink

Speaking as a fan of Condo and Andy, it can be worse lol

But Drake this is AMAZING, I CANNOT WAIT to read more!

Computo II! Danielle's is the icon I could not identify!!! Good job, Harbi was right! I'm glad to see Danielle along.

Gosh, one panel away from finding out what happened to Jo!

Love the conversation between Vi and Ayla. It's so couple-y!

Glad Jo isn't dead (probably). As IB said above, Tinya's retro costume is great. Those little computo/Validus creatures are fun too.

Looking forward to finding out where Jo, Nura, Thom and Drake are.

Are Nura and Thom in there too, or have they foreseen this and are working at it from another angle?

What Nightcrawler said.

Look, from my perspective, you are doing the work of four people-- writer, penciller, colorist, and whatever you call that guy who fills in the word bubbles.

Plus, I assume that you are working 40 hours a week at a paying job.

A panel every month or two is more than anyone could reasonably expect. (Except you, of course. I know you have this stuck in your head, itching to get out.)

And your work is far more dense than anything in off-the-shelf comics today.

Take your time. I love the styel of artwork.

Alan Scott standing 1000 years behind Rond Vidar was beautiful.

And the "not Red Lanterns" panel is a cliffhanger panel good enough for the ending of any DC or Marvel book-- and better than most!

I agree with everyone else, take your time, it's worth the wait. The only thing I'd wish for would be bigger images...the old eyes, you know. wink
I love how Brin is the only one thinking of stealth in the cliffhanger. smile

The images actually start out bigger, I sized them down to what I considered more reasonable for the screen. But I will keep that in mind for my next round.

And interesting observation about Timberwolf. It makes the next page that much more ironic. wink (hopefully you'll see soon...)

Thanks for the very kind words, folks! I will keep plugging away at this - and yes, between job and family and sleep, there just isn't enough time in the day. wink (although with football season ending, there will be more on Sundays)

(1) This is beautiful work.

(2) I am impressed by your skill at visual characterization. You wordlessly tell us who the characters are.

(3) The amount of work, planning and preparation that goes into these panels is inferable, but you make it look easy. It is difficult to believe this is the work of a single person.

(4) Personally, I am jealous.

(5) Keep up the good work.

Oh, so good Drake! I particularly love the bit with XS rounding up the guns before Kid Quantum can even get around to finishing the second letter in her name! Very cool.

Ooh, four Daxamites! And no Element Lad there to one-shot them by filling the air with lead, so this one will be once more, with feeling!

Uh oh, is Violet our next "victim"? Rage, Red Lanterns and Brother Blood.... and four Daxamites!

LOL...I see what you mean. Ah Brin, your impetuosity has proven me wrong! smile

I like the detail of the panel and color change when Rond was looking through the green-tinted visor. It was a subtle touch that I missed at first read through.

More great work!

oh wow! Things are heating up... what happened to Brainy...?

Tinya bugging Brainy makes sense, she must indeed be worried about Jo.

Oh no... Imra and Garth... and other Legionnaires not reporting in! Way to keep up the suspense. Who else is down?

Lovely battle with the Daxamites. Like Mon trying to reason with some, like Rond being snippy and Jenni being all upbeat, and Dev being all sarcastic.

Can't wait for more.

Blorching up a bucketfull of red lantern rings must be hell on on the esophageal lining...

But wow, amazing story, as ever Drake! I'm on the edge of my seat wanting to know what's up with A) Jo, B) Wildfire-not-Wildfire, C) really-real-Wildfire, D) Brainy, E) everyone else!

Thanks for the kind words, all!

I appreciate the positive response to that XS scene. I will say that when laying it out, despite the fact that it would have been easier graphically to place Jenni's word balloon on top, it would have been a disservice to both her and Kid Q to have XS take off before getting word from Kid Q. Both to Kid Q's leadership and XS's teamwork, especially since Timberwolf had just been shown to act proactively against orders. Making sure that XS was responding to Kid Q's order meant that they were in sync rather than XS taking it upon herself.

I've avoided commenting on the story so far but that's just one little nuance that I try to take into consideration and honestly, just makes it so much fun for me. There's a reason that after spending 8 hours drawing stuff for my day job that I can't wait to do more drawing and it means a lot that this is appreciated by fellow Legion fans. smile

Much, much more to come!

oops, double-post.

I guess I'll also add that the Daxamites are not only based on that terrible Dev-Em who blew up the moon, they were based on Zod's crew - leader, big guy, woman and kid.

More answers as to the real, real threat are coming in the next posting. (psst - it's not the Red Lanterns)

I highly appreciate the level of thought you put into this, Drake! And as a big fan of both characters, I say that it works very well and does a great service to them!

Great work Drake! Reading this has reminded me of one of my favorite things about the Legion - having so many members on the team always leads to unique and interesting combinations of characters.

I don't think there's ever been a comic printed where Jazmin, Mon, Brin, Jenni, Xao, Dev and Rond interacted before and it's so fun to read.

As a writer, that's indeed one of my favorite things is to look at characters who always interact with each other (Dirk and Thom, Jo, Tinya, Shady and Mon, Drake and Dawny) and to try to switch it up and put them in scenes with some Legionnaires outside of their usual circle, just to see how they bounce off each other.

Set, I totally agree. Dev and Rond were both there mostly because I like them, but then also to advance the plot, but I began to love their interplay -- nerd/rogue, scientist/spy, team player/loner and then the fact that Rond is with Laurel and that drives Dev nuts because that just makes zero sense to him and his sense of masculinity. They're not even Legionnaires, but it just happened that I love writing them together. smile Throwing in XS as the douse of cold water just makes it more fun. (it was originally going to be Ayla in a more snarky way but having XS be polite and just honest and upbeat made it a more fun contrast to Dev, whose easy-goingness is really more a facade)

Wonderful, Drake, the pefect way to start the day with some new panels from your story.

The colours are so vibrant! Can't say I didn't smile at that one Xanthu panel... and a great heart-stopping moment for Zoe.

As Kinetix's #1 fan, I can say you've got her personality down pat... and great use of her powers!

OMEGA????? And multiple Wildfire... what has happened to Blok and White Witch then?

And Atmos??? so much happening in that page!!!

Vi shouting for Yera?

And the happenings with the Red Lanterns...!

Amazing as usual!

Update: I've been wanting to get working on this some more, and I had a few pages "in the can" before the pandemic hit, but it's been difficult lately, having lost my job then the pandemic making it difficult to focus on anything other than finding work I can do remotely, etc.... Then the recent civil unrest here in the U.S. makes writing a story about a hate-based villain spreading rage and hate just hits too close to home and seems irrelevant compared to what's going on. Anyway... I hope to find the motivation soon. Spoilers, the good guys do win, so maybe working on it will be cathartic. (although that happy ending is still a while aways...)

Sorry to hear about your work troubles, Drake. It definitely is tough being creative normally, and especially when you don't have much motivation due to external factors. Most good stories take time, after all. Wishing you the best, stay safe.

Happy to hear you haven't abandoned it (and the positive ending, which I didn't doubt). Sorry you got hit by the Covid fallout, which seems to be worse than the virus for most people.

Just wanted to reiterate the support of the others Drake. As Ibby says, it can be tough enough to do creative things when everything's going smoothly. This...well...
All the best.

Go Imra!

Waking up to that Dante-esque vista would shock and scare most folk but she's made of sterner stuff and gets straight down to it.

Iron-butt to the rescue 😊

Thanks for posting this Drake, gorgeous work as always.

I knew it! your brilliant clues pointed to Legionnaires being transformed somehow... Jo's not dead, he's transformed...

goodness! Gim as a vessel for Omega... this is really raising the stakes! Will Imra be in time...?

Linking Omega and the Red Lanterns in a story is genius!

Also, those Saturn Girl panels are perfect, and I'm pretty excited about classic Gim getting a plot thrown his way that isn't about Yera or his mother (although to be fair, I am guilty of going to that well with him)

More great posts Drake. Totally loving Brainy's cool certainty that Omega will return properly. I wonder what your plans are for Yera?

Also, as this is called the Death of a Legionnaire I'm wondering who will die? Brainy seems like the obvious choice, but am waiting with baited breath to find out who it will be (and how).

Looking forward to more, more., more.

Yeesh, can't believe it's been a year since I posted. I've recently been able to rededicate myself to working on this again, so hopefully it won't be so long before I can post the next few pages.

Sweet, glad to see more!

Hehe, "batshit crazy".

Love how smart and clever Imra is being, questioning everything, including how COMPUTO got those vids...

I like Kid Q taking charge, after all she's the away team leader. go Jaz!

Brilliant, having the miracle machine be a hoax!

nice reference to Rond and Laurel, and I like that you had Rond and Dev exit - more focus on the Legionnaires, then. (still eager/worried to see what happened to Ultra Boy and Kinetix, for example!)

Perfect way to deal with the Lanterns - acknowledge their presence but don't try to fold them into the Legion. Rond looks great!

Miracle Machine was a hoax - made me laugh. Not a total hoax, there was some power in there that Brainy could use. What a conspiracy! What else do the Lanterns know?

So pleased that you continue to work on this project!

Funny you should ask ... but what's not funny is that I plan to pick up on it much later in the story. smile

Also, thanks everyone for the nice words! I always know my next installments will be read and appreciated here. Btw, I am so glad to finally use that drawing of the Miracle Machine I first posted here in one of the Bits Galleries years ago - I always knew it was going to be on this page of my story, it just took that long for me to finally use it!!

Hi Drake, I am excited to see more updates on this story!

I just read this whole thing from the start, as I finally have a decent size screen to be able to appreciate it - some random thoughts coming up, sorry if some of these are repeated from when you first posted smile

- the scene with the newbies being sworn in had so much detail! I really love all the different aliens in the crowd and I forgot about the surprise Dr Mayavale cameo so I got to be amused all over again! laugh

- omg I love Lydda's Betty Page hair....I love the beehive too much to get rid of it myself but if I ever did, that would be her new hair for sure!

- I love your Dev-Em, he really comes across as the hot rogue type smile

- Five Minutes Later remains amazing! (I also like your subsequent adoption of that for all the other time jump scenes)

- that panel with the Red Lantern Corps behind Rond was really well done! I love the detail!

- XS's trademark talking a million miles a second is excellent - I dig her new hairstyle too!

- the Ysmault splash was really detailed as well!

- that one close-up of Gim's face in Brainy's machine is so well done! It reminds me of Stuart Immonen's Legion days tbh!

- something about Imra using the phrase "batshit crazy" cracks me up, like things have to be REALLY bad to get Imra to cuss laugh

- okay I am IN LOVE with that anglerfish Green Lantern, I demand a mini-series at the very least! Sharkfin mohawk GL is pretty cool too!

- also I don't think I have mentioned this previously, having the Miracle Machine be a bunch of different Lantern Corps rings working in unison is such an awesome idea! It's a nice way to reference the DCU in general without explicitly tying any of this into real world current GL continuity

- something I just noticed this time around because I've finally got a decent size screen to look at it; I like how you draw body language - it seems like there's never a lazy pose used here, you always put thought into how each character would actually present themselves.

All up, this is a great love letter to the Legion and I am really enjoying it! Looking forward to seeing where this goes next!

Hey Drake, so sorry I missed the latest sections when you first posted them.

You are a master of adding so much story and ideas in just a couple of posts - Computo's nexus is a great idea and looks stunning, the Miracle Machines reveal gave me a laugh - love how casual Rond was about telling the team that the Controllers are not as omnipotent as they thought and the machine is a sham, also great cliffhanger - guess the plan is out the window now then.

Tremendous stuff Drake, you continue to impress!

Looking forward to more, more, more!

Drake, hi, I can't believe I missed this when you posted it!

You've really captured the fight scen so well, from Brins physicality, Wildfire twisting his neck to get Brin, to Mon El's speed and power, its quite incredible what you put into just a few pages.

You've ramped up the tension and I'm really looking forward to whatever you share next!

Great stuff!

This continues being great, Drake! I like Dragonmage's characterisation here where he's a bit shaken and over his head...and that hexagon panel with Imra making mental contact with Mon is really good!

I dig the panel layouts on these last couple of pages generally actually (as well as Wildfire flying in the gutters between the panels on the earlier page)

Oooh I love it! Great scene with XS and Dragonmage, saving innocents and that nice touching bit with their mutual concern, and Xao feeling a bit overwhelmed . And their consternation at not reaching the SP officer in time

And this is the Mon-El I love, having overcome the Phantom Zone trauma and volunteering himself to help save tbe Legionnaires

Also nice reveal re everyone has been converted to Omega Energy

And nice telling bit with the Red Lanterns also descending on Metropolis…

Awesome work Drake!

Thanks! I will say, when this started I had no idea Mon-El would be as important as he's become to this story. But it ended up making sense and I found I had an arc for him.

We're almost at the end of Part II. Part III is going to all be about another Legionnaire (or two) that I also had no idea would end up being so important when this started. I mean, Wildfire and Ultra Boy are like my two favorites, but I took them off the board right away -- what's wrong with me?? laugh

Drake, these are so good - reading these is part of what prompted me to get back involved here on LW lasts year! I can't wait to see more of this!

I assume something you're referring to is Vi and Yera? Unless I'm mistaken the last we saw of Vi was her thinking to track Yera down.

These are great Drake.

You are keeping the story going and ramping up the excitement!

Nice characterisations of the various Legionnaires from Dragonmage feeling overwhelmed and Xs empathising, Imra is as pragmatic as always and Mon El is just bloody heroic, of course.

Your art is as clean and clear and just amazing as always, you are super talented! The colours greatly enhance the scenes too, so well done on that as well.

I'm wondering where Nura has got to after her dream about Atmos, so perhaps her and Thom will show up next. But whoever you've got in the wings, I'm looking forward to more, more and more!

Glad to see that Vi still hasn't been assimilated yet and that she's found Yera. I can't wait for the next part!

is that Yera? Has Vi gone to find Yera?

nice twist, having Omega draw from anger and hate...

whoo I love how you weave in and out of scenes, like that one panel with Xao and Jenni still fighting, barely.

Poor Gim, that must hurt...

and nice depiction of the zone or wherever that Lar found himself in! also him looking for Tasmia is a nice touch

yay! nice to see more, Drake!!

The Homeland is an amazing concept. Also, not surprised to see that parts of the Middle East could become uninhabitable in a few hundred years. Climate change!

nice callback to Yera's impersonation of Vi... also interesting to see that Gim (though still a Legionnaire, right?) and Yera have their home in Homeland.

I like Vi's dialogue there. Nice explanation of her re why she feels so... bad. Now, is Yera being infected by the anger too?

oh, can Yera copy powers too? (you know, that whole copy form not function thing). Lightning beast?

nice Starro cameo!

yow! Vi hiding inside Yera, yikes!

oooph, just like Brin to forget that Yera was on that Khund mission, not Vi. and just like Cham to notice.

Drake, this is an amazing scene, and an amazing way to deal with the lingering consequences of Yera's impersonation of Vi. Vi, Yera and Ayla all come off well!

Ayla and Vi's love, and Yera's final apology, and Vi's heartbreaking confession. Wow, just wow! take a bow, this is awesome!

It's always a good day when we get more of your story Drake! And it was sooo good! I am super impressed - you should be proud of your work here. I've always thought that the Vi/Yera interaction should be a lot more raw than it ended up being portrayed. This was much better.

Vi & Ayla are so core to the team, and its great to see Ayla pull Vi back from the brink - twice.

Oh - also, kudos for the Wikipedia Galactica. laugh

Your artwork is amazing. I love the designs of these characters. The little purple triangle on Violet's costume is just the perfect addition.
And the way you write dialog-- Vi's diatribe against Yera just burns the screen with emotion. And the way Ayla brings her down. beautiful.

Also - I'm just going to put this out here out of experience - but I really appreciate how the vidscreens in the 30th/31st centuries still work after being smashed.

Wooh I am always here for some good Vi/Yera confrontation and that was great! The emergency lighting was brilliant too, it really helped to sell the tension!

Kinda love that flashback scene where Ayla reaches out to Vi, it really shows how important they are to one another without being sappy about it smile

This might actually be my favourite part of this story so far!

Thank you all for the nice words! Stay tuned for Part 5 - the finale (and yes, a Legionnaire will die!)

Not for nothing, but I'd been waiting years to get this part of the story out. It came a lot later in the process - it was meant to be a small part of the story just to show the rage effects, etc. but then it came to mean more once I started writing it ... and I also just needed to say, "I'M. SO. ANGRY!!!" because I am. We all have shit, we have pain and pain turns into anger so easily. But we don't always get that heartfelt apology, and we don't all have that person who supports and accepts us. It was cathartic. smile

I'm glad you got to write this beautiful piece, Drake, and I hope it's a sign that you got that cathartic moment in real life too smile

It's interesting how sometimes writing these characters becomes a bit therapeutic...you did an awesome job, and I hope that it was helpful in real life too! smile

Yeah, I wanted a scene where someone makes that mistake. It could have been anyone, but in my research of when Yera was Vi, I came across the mission to the Khund homeworld (LSH #287)

and it was perfect that Brin was there - it really fits that he'd make that mistake. Even moreso since y'know when you're hanging out with your ex and you're just babbling because you're trying to seem cool and casual even though you're self-conscious in front of said ex but also want to keep talking to them? That.

And if memory serves, that was the mission where the Imskians made the Vi/Yera switch
