It's a theory that makes much sense to me.

Even if it didn't make sense, there is a ton of evidence to back it up.

I had a teacher in high school who spoke with a very thick accent from the Central-South Philippines. She pronounced evidence as "eebidense".

I was visiting friends in Scotland and we were at Balmoral (the Queen's summer palace. You got to walk the grounds if no royals were there) Walking along, my friends said they did not hear an accent when I talked. I accepted the compliment and then read the brochure I had that said admission proceeds went to the Royal Cancer Society. I, of course, pronounced it "Can-sah". They laughed and said "Oh there it is!"

That was a good educational moment for many people. I've met post-graduate students who didn't know Georgia the country existed.

Massachusetts has 3 countries and one state in it. Peru, Wales, and Holland (although Holland the country is no longer called Holland) and Florida are all towns in Massachusetts. I still make the joke that I drove from Boston to Florida and back in one day, when I drove out to Florida Massachusetts.

Sadly, given the number of people with almost no knowledge of geography, many would not get the joke.

Driving from Boston to Holland in one day would sound even more impressive!

I wonder how many people would fail to realize that one needs to cross an ocean to do that.
