Chaim has it. This was the Levitz written retrospective story of and adventure with Projectra, Karate Kid and Ferro Lad from LoSH v3 #31. Jeckie is delivering some important documents on behalf of the Legion's patron R.J. Brande and has cast an illusion of three security guards accompanying her but decides to make them look significantly more formidable into something more ogrish. Unfortunately it doesn't make any difference as Black Mace knocks her out and they disappear. attacks them anyway and his mace swings through them. Jeckie replaces them with an illusion of flames all around which panics Black Mace but in his attempt to escape he knocks her out and so grabs the documents and gets away.

Myg's mention of demonic minions reminded me of the incident. That might be what he was thinking of in the first place, even if imperfectly described.
Superboy's first knowledge of which Legionnaire was actually an encounter with an impostor, and how did he recognize that fact?
