To see if he could prevent the destruction of Krypton, and lead his people in creating The Kryptonian Empire?

Not specifically any of those things.

This was in a single panel towards the end of an adventure which had involved time in a very confusing way (big surprise!) so he was trying to get a better grasp on it.
A better way of putting the question is what prompted his interest?

All great ideas but no.

The adventure involves a character known for dealing in time.

I was going to say to break through the Iron Curtain of time, but I see Ibby has already gone with the trapper.

Sooo....

Hes trying to uncover the secret of Dr Mayavale's train carriage!

The adventure that triggered his interest was against the Time Trapper but he was reading it afterwards to understand some particular aspect of time that played a key part in the adventure.
Can anyone suggest which adventure it was?

No nothing related to that.

Let's give a hint: this was written by Jim Shooter and drawn by Mike Grell during the Superboy title period. It involves the death (temporary) of several legionnaires and the kidnapping of five of them. Does that ring any bells?

Guess I've picked something too vague so I'm going to give it to Ibby as the first to mention the Time Trapper.

Superboy#223 "We Can't escape the Trap in Time".

The Legion is racing off to stop some rip in space when five of them are whisked away to a few days in the future where TT shows them that the Legion failed and died along with half the galaxy. He says he picked them out because in looking at all possible futures he can only rule in timelines where these five do not exist, so he has grabbed them to eliminate them. (Sounds a bit dumb since he has just shown the rest of the Legion being killed. Surely he could have let them join the others and manipulated them into failing and dying as well? Once again showing that knowing lots doesn't make you wise.) He proceeds to separate them and fight them one-on-one. Each gets in hits but also gets whacked in ways they didn't expect from the Trapper. From our omniscient perspective we can see that TT keeps swapping them around so sometimes the Legionnaires are actually fighting each other unknowingly. Anyway Saturn Girl gets wise and lets Superboy know that TT is somehow manipulating time to make all the fights happen simultaneously and reasons that he must be storing enormous energy to do it and asks Superboy to compare with his super-memory if anything is different about TT. Supes spots the hourglass on his belt, smashes it instead and TT is drawn into the Red Sun trap he had set for Superboy, and the legionnaires all return to before they were kidnapped. It is while they are in the Legion cruiser heading to seal the rip that Superboy spends some time reading Brainiac 5's technical article on time travel in the Legion Manual to try to understand what happened a bit better. It was a rather incongruous panel and I always wondered if it was one of those in-universe ads for something DC was going to print, but it never appeared.

Take it away Ibby.

nope and nope

the altercation was about Robotica's status. Think which planet had good reason to hate Robotica?

After the Robotican invasion, Timber Wolf had an un-friendly encounter with the leader of which planet?

In Legion Annual # 4, Legionnaires under attack on Talus by Mordru-zombies accidentally trigger a time-retrieval program which brings Timber Wolf (and, sadly, Jamm) to the 30th century. Who else is shown there that there was a time-retrieval program set up for, which did not get triggered?
