Vieta's formulas are frequently used with polynomials with coefficients in any integral domain R. My daughter might know what you are talking about. She is a Maths Honours grad.

(I've never really been strong on math. But once in awhile I'll start reading a page about it on Wiki, just because the equations themselves look so nice to me. I mean, simply as pictures, I like how they look.)

I mean, simply as pictures, I like how they look.) I've never really thought about how they look but you're right. Some of them do have a beauty all their own. Of the few I can follow their logic often has an attractiveness to it as well, going from a simple concept through a complex path to a simple conclusion, very circular, but as soon as you said it I could see how the visual patterns shine as well.

I've never really thought about how they look but you're right. Some of them do have a beauty all their own. I think what started me down that road was learning that one of my favorite painters, Thomas Eakins (1844-1916), would relax by doing logarithmic tables, and eventually he began using them to develop some of his compositions, too.
