I've been trying to be diligent lately about getting old stuff out of the studio closet. I want that space back for things we use now. Not for dead weight and old stuff that can just be heaved into the recycling bin.

Throwing away things is tough. I had to make a conscious decision to do that last time I moved. My mother brought so much stuff over the times she visited...

When we cleaned out my parents' house after my dad died (and mom decided to move away), I was startled by how much crap they'd held onto and filled a huge garbage dumpster with. Sadly, I think my house won't be any better at this rate.

Turning back to the earlier discussion about high school, I look back on it mostly fondly, though I have had similar feelings to you all about reunions. I mean, I really took some bold steps to bring myself out of my shell during those years: sang in chorus, acted in plays, etc. And, of course, I met the most important person in my life--my wife--there, in my senior year! love

To point #1, Lardy - Yeah. When we were prepping the house for sale over a month ago, we just dumped a ton of crap, and a half ton we rented a storage unit to hold. Now that we have to ACTUALLY move, I need to do that exercise again!

To point #2 - Awwww smile

Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things is a good and informative read, but I don't recommend it if you sadden easily. The chapter about pet hoarding is pretty heart-breaking.

Pet hoarding frown just the thought makes me sad.

Anything related to loss of freedom makes me sad.

I've watched a few episodes of "Hoarders", here and there. Too many episodes with dead cats. shake

My mother is a hoarder who I can't get to change.

And my sis has moved out of the area, so whenever I have to deal with it, its gonna be a lot of time I'll have to take.

My grandma was like that, and passed it on my mom.

I've picked up some of that too... I reuse the same plastic bags for the grocery shopping for example

Yup, my mom got it from her aunt, who lived through all the shortages of the WW2 era. (My aunt effectively raised my mom)

I have it too (I think most of us do to some extent). It's a matter of SERIOUSLY sitting down and thinking about what to toss, give to someone who would appreciate the object, or sell due to value.

Most of us didn't get that training.

Ten or twelve years ago, I found ebay fun. Now it always feels like a hassle. I'd rather consign, donate, swap, or give things away when possible. There's a local store called Rerun which has taken a lot of my odds and ends over the last 3-5 years-- excluding 2020 of course. You don't make a fortune letting a middleman do most of the work, but you do get enough for coffee and sandwiches here and there. Which is good enough for me.

They've recently reopened, thankfully. So many other places never recovered from the lockdown.

Yup. that personal touch is nice... and also with things like buying / selling / trading, I find I always get a lot of questions during the process that I could not have anticipated earlier...

I've been re-watching the "Family" sketches from the old episodes of The Carol Burnett Show and I always crack up when snooty elder sister Ellen is grasping and grabbing at her dead relatives' collectables and her younger sister Eunice snaps, "You want me to wrap that up for you?"

I was never able to get into the spin-off sitcom Mama's Family, though. By toning down Mama's toxicity and adding a whole additional cast of loud imbeciles, I think they destroyed the bite of the original sketches. Also, I hate laugh tracks. I've always hated them.

Laugh tracks are just so fake and so tacky, IMO.

The only show where I will tolerate a laugh track is M*A*S*H, as I grew up with it as being "normal". Thankfully the DVD release from several years ago allows the option to turn it off, which is an interesting experience.

Its the same in the states. A couple years ago, when my oldest had her wisdom teeth out, that's what we got her to eat initially when she was coming down off all the meds. laugh

Thanks, Ibby!

hug

We might be going out for dinner. I don't know. I'm still leery of dining inside, but if we can find outdoor seating, fine.

By the way, that recipe is incredibly flexible. Often I'll mix in granulated garlic or a little paprika, or maybe a "fines herbes" mix that I made up for another dish but had left over. I also usually use new potatoes, because they make smaller slices which crisp up on the edges faster.

My son dotes on cooking potatoes various ways. so much so that my sister gave him a cookbook for Christmas that is something like "The all-potato cook book". Nothing but different ways to cook potatoes.
