You know me, I always try to put more Legion-related games in Spaceopoly when I can. Inspired by Lance's I'm Thinking of an ANIMAL and Dave's I'm Thinking of an ANNUAL, I bring you "I'm Thinking of a LEGION CHARACTER."

Rules are just like previously. The winning poster thinks of a Legion character from across the team's varied history. Posters then have to ask "yes/no questions" to guess which character is being thought of. Any named character who appears in a Legion book or story from any reality is fair game, I figure. Hero, villain, civilian, alien, one shot... you name it (literally, har har).

I decided against having to specify which reality a character is from (like Kingdom Come Ultra Boy or Postboot Tharok instead of just "Ultra Boy" and "Tharok") simply due to how potentially complex that could be. Plus, everyone's labeling systems are a little different. But hey, if everyone wants we could add that factor. I figure there's enough characters in Legion lore as it is though to easily surpass 200 rounds.

So ... I'm thinking of a Legion character.

The character did appear postboot.

He is male.

He has never,as far as I can recall, ever been depicted as having any super-powers, even on a temporary basis.

He has never been a member of the Legion.

There have been at least two stories that have made him seem possibly villainous, until mysterious circumstances were explained.

I take "postboot" to mean the main version of the Legion published between 1994 (Zero Hour) and 2004.

She is not from Lallor.

If by "color girl" you mean a female version of Color Kid, then no.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

As the character didn't appear in the postboot, she was not part of the Workforce.

Time for a summary, perhaps:

This character is not male, a robot, or an eldritch creature from beyond. She did not appear in either the postboot or Threeboot. She uses a codename and is part of a super-team, but has never been either a villain or a Legionnaire, nor was she a part of the Workforce or UP Academy. She is not from Lallor. She is not Quantum Queen, Psyche, Color Girl, or Rainbow Girl.

The character was not part of a super-team, but did briefly co-operate with one.

The character has a a racial adaptation/power that apparently all of it's kind has, to one extent or another.

The character would probably be considered a villain by at least one Legionnaire.

The person is not from Titan.

This person shares a vast number of shared physical characteristics with Terran humans (the presumed baseline), yet not enough to pass for a Terran human.

The person is not Nara Minsork.

The person has, as far as I am aware, only appeared postboot.

This Legionnaire appeared in the preboot.

I'm pretty sure this character has never been expelled for false pretenses or general treachery.

Was it someone from 5YL? Seems like all the other pre-89 male Legionnaires did appear postboot, even if not as Legionnaires.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It's not Jimmy Olsen.

The character makes an appearance in the 5YL series, though it's not someone who first appears then.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

hmm... maybe you forgot his postboot appearance...

Chemical King?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Chemical King. I'm almost positive this character doesn't appear postboot, barring postboot appearances of alt-reality Legions and the like.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Summary:

The character appears in the preboot, but not in the postboot. The character makes an appearance 5YL, but this is not the character's first appearance. The character has never been expelled for false pretenses or treachery. The character has been a Legionnaire. The character is not female. It's not Tellus, Blok, Quislet, Superboy, Magnetic Kid, Jimmy Olsen or Chemical King.

okay. Not Superboy, Rokk, Garth, Lyle, Cham, Gim, Thom, Querl, Dirk, Chuck, Tenzil, Jo, Jan, Lar, Val, Nemesis Kid, Ferro Lad, Brin, Chemical King, Drake, Tyroc, Blok, Jacques, Pol, Tellus, Quislet, Brek, Rond, Kent, Kid Quantum, Devlin, the Khund members, or Dragonmage.

The character does appear in an Adult Legion story.

Not Power Boy, nor any other dead Legionnaire from that timeline.

I am truly stumped if it's not him.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Was it Kid Psycho?
I don't know when he died, I'm afraid, or if he died anywhere but in the DCNuboot.
sorry

Finally! It is indeed Echo!

I honestly didn't expect him to be so difficult.

Posted by Candlelight on :

Echo was a treacherous badguy, wasn't he?
Do I have the clues confused?
sigh

PS looking back, I took the expelled part to cover all of the badguys who've joined.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Echo was first introduced as a member of the LSV in the Adult Legion stories.

He was revealed as having been a member of the Legion during the 5YG in the Legion Sourcebook as well as in flashback during the 5YL series.

I think he's since been used as a member of the LSV again in the retroboot.

ok, I am thinking of a Legion character.

yeah, I overlooked Echo, too. But between Echo's alt-timeline versions, and the reformed Spider Girl/Wave, not all baddies were infiltrators to be expelled.

Okay, 'classic' is 'preboot' and sometimes is also 'Adventure era' (but not always). Threeboot is Threeboot. Reboot is Reboot.

What the heck is 'postboot?' Is that the classic continuity being picked up *after* all of the reboots, like what we are reading now?

As for the actual question, does the character appear in the Reboot?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Postboot is the same thing as reboot. It made a lot more sense as a term before the threeboot. [Smile]

So, yes, the character appears in the reboot. Bonus fact: the character has also appeared since the retroboot.

The character is also male.

You don't have to be born on Earth to be human. If both your parents are human, you're human by definition WHEREVER you were born - but neither Jor-El nor Lara were human.

Has the character ever been in a long-standing romantic relationship with another Legionnaire?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Chuck Taine, no longstanding romantic relationship with another Legionnaire.

Just to clarify a couple of things:

1) On the human question: if we are using the "descended from Earth people" criterion, then whether this person is such may depend on the continuity we're talking about, though in at least one version his home planet is confirmed as an Earth colony.

2) I took the "always had inherent superpowers" to be a question of whether they were born with powers or not. I believe every version of this character who has been shown has had powers, though he was not born with them.

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

I was going to say Gim, but he was born with powers in the Threeboot.

Stumped.

Posted by Blacula on :

Is it Kent Shakespeare? (I don't know much about this character so he may well have been born with his powers.)

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Kent Shakespeare (who received his powers from some sort of virus or something).

Hint: While this character has been a Legionnaire, it is not someone who would normally be thought of as a Legionnaire.

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

Recap:

The character is a male human, not from Earth who has been a Legionnaire but isn't currently, and isn't usually thought of as one. They appeared in the Preboot, reboot (but was not a memeber there) and retroboot. He has powers but was not born with them, and has never been in a long standing relationship with another Legionnaire. He is currently believed to be alive in the retroboot. He is not Matter Eater Lad, Superman (Kal-El), Rond Vidar, Chuck Taine or Kent Shakespeare.

To Recap:

This is a male character that has never been a Legionnaire, nor a villain. He did appear postboot, including before the Team 20/30 split, but isn't exclusively a postboot character. He can't fly unaided, and does not have powers beyond that of a normal human. He is presumably older than the average Legionnaire, and is not related to any of them (though there may be a quibble there). He does not have white hair, and to my knowledge, does not play a role in the origin of any hero or villain. He's not Leland McCauley or Derek Morgna.

He is not Caucasian.

Okay, it's been three hours, and EDE was online for at least two of those following his rapid-fire narrowing down. Clearly, he knows, so I'll step aside if he DOES want to do it, but at this point it doesn't look like it...

Dr. Gym'll.

Posted by Blacula on :

It's funny how, in this game, your mind provides facts to the character that clearly aren't there from the clues.

For example, for some reason, in this round I had it firmly in my mind that this was a human-looking character, and so have been wracking my mind trying to think of non-powered alien-colored humanoid allies of the Legion. When, if I hadn't had that notion, Dr Gym'll probably would have been an obvious answer all along.

So yes, Dave - I am kicking myself. [Wink]

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

Yes, it's Dr. Gym'll. The relative thing threw me a little as he is Variable Lad's uncle. Variable Lad was never a full-fledged Legionnaire per se, but his statue is in the Hall, so he may have had some posthumous honours bestowed.

Yay! After posting that I was totally thinking "Crap! I should've guessed False-Pretenses Lad!"

Anyway, I too love the Murrans and their pill-popping super-power pill grooviness!

But the character I'm thinking of is not a Murran!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

He is not involved in the origin of a Legionnaire (though at least one Legionnaire origin plays a role in his storyline).

He appears in multiple issues.

I'm not completely certain about his hair color offhand (and can't find a convenient pic online), but I'm pretty sure it's either dark brown or black.

Singular? Are you getting mixed up with the Mordruverse issue (v4 #5)? I'm pretty sure he was talking about v4 #06-61.

Yeah, this story: [Smash] [Wink]

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

To summarize:

This character is male, humanoid in appearance, with (I'm fairly certain) dark hair and no porn-stache. He has never been a member of the LSH. He is not a villain, a relative of a Legionnaire, or a government/political/religious figure. He wears no headgear of any kind, but there may be an association of the character with headgear.

He has powers beyond those of a normal human. He shares a homeworld with a Legionnaire.

He has never met Magnetic Kid, Tellus, Quislet, Chameleon Girl, Blok, or Dawnstar.

He appears preboot, but not in the Adventure Era, v2 (under any title), v3, v4, or a Legion-related mini-series. He does not appear postboot or in the Legion cartoon. He has appeared in multiple issues, but only one story. He did not die. He is not involved in the origin of a Legionnaire, but reference to the origin of at least one Legionnaire plays a role in the story in which he is featured.

No, I just think you guys are missing something obvious. [Wink]

Hint: there is one major preboot series starring the Legion of Super-Heroes that hasn't been mentioned yet in regards to this question. Figure out what that is, and it should come pretty quickly.

I almost went for that teleporting Dominator girl introduced around the same time, but decided her lack of an actual name probably made her too obscure. [Wink]

Your turn, Future!

Posted by Blacula on :

P.S. Before he popped into my head as a character for this question, I don't think I'd ever spent more than 10 seconds thinking about Beppo.

But now that I've Wikipidea-ed and Comic Databased and Cosmic Teams-ed and just generally learnt everything there is to know about him... I'm kinda obsessed with Beppo the Super-Monkey!

And I suddenly have a craving to read every Beppo story there is. I noticed he pops up in that 1970s World of Krypton series which I've never read, so I'm off to eBay that now.

[Beppo] [Beppo] [Beppo]

Posted by Future on :

While I too never think much on Beppo, I did enjoy his random appearances with the other Super-Pets. He's probably one of my favorites if I had to pick.

I'm thinking of a Legion character...

She has not.

Did she have an entry in Who's Who in the LSH?

Is it Flare?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Is it Lady Memory?

Posted by Set on :

Is she Beauty Blaze?

Posted by Future on :

Is it a character created by Paul Levitz?

Yep! She was created by Paul Levitz.

Posted by Future on :

It is not Caress.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Did she first appear in v3?

Posted by Future on :

She did first appear in v3!

To reiterate: I'm thinking of a female villain with super-powers created by Paul Levitz. She was not part of the Legion of Super-Villains or the Legion of Super-Heroes. She appeared in the Preboot but not in the Postboot or animated series. She had an entry in Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heroes. She is not Beauty Blaze, Caress, Flare, or Lady Memory.

Is it Starbright?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Ooh, good call. I'll guess Starlight!

Posted by Future on :

Ding ding ding! I was thinking of Starbright!

She was one of Starfinger's groovy go-to girls. While she didn't appear in the animated series, she certainly could have! Starfinger seemed, at least visually, inspired mostly from the version that Starbright and her partner Starlight worked for.

Your turn, Kent!

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Okay, then!

I am thinking of a Legion character.

Posted by Future on :

Has this character ever been a Legionnaire?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Did this character appear preboot?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

This character has been a legionnaire, and has appeared preboot.

Posted by Set on :

Is this character, in preboot continuity, currently dead?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

This character has never been depicted or described as definitively dead in preboot/current continuity/ies, as far as I'm aware.

That's the best I can say based on a confusing question, and my lack of having read most of the past year of stories.

Posted by Blacula on :

Has this character ever been in a romantic relationship with another Legionnaire?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is this character male?

Posted by Future on :

Is this character from Earth?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

The character is not male.

The character is from Earth.

The character has been in a romantic relationship with another Legionnaire.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is it Insect Queen?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

since there were 2 IQs, pre and postboot, I could make you differentiate... but I won't.

Yes, Insect Queen. Lana specifically. Who technically might be presumed 'currently dead' but hey, it is comics, and for all we know she's in suspended animation somewhere.

It's not Omar Magz.

Posted by Future on :

Ooh. Wait. Was it Eviseratronic?

Posted by Blacula on :

The one, the only...

EVISCERATRONIC!!!

I wondered if the fact I'd said he had no superpowers might throw people. I wasn't sure what to write there but decided that since his powers most likely all came from the gem, the answer was no, he didn't have any inherent superpowers himself.

Over to you, Future.

Posted by Future on :

I completely missed the villain answer and guessed Omar. Silly me! Of course Evisceratronic would have been the obvious answer. [Wink]

I did like the follow up on that otherwise 'random, poor Sci Cop' from early in the reboot. I also liked his equally quick dismissal as a super villain.

I was always under the assumption it was yes/no questions, but I also swiped the concept from two other threads so I'm not the definitive expert. I'd say whatever the majority decides works.

Just to get the timeline straight - this character didn't first appear before the Team 20/30 split, didn't first appear during the Team 20/30 split, and didn't first appear during the DnA era.

Therefore they must have first appeared in the Gail Simone story?

Wellington was portrayed (IMHO) as an unfortunate victim of the Dominion who obeyed them or would be executed, much as Colossal Boy was forced to join the LSV or his parents would be killed. Ultimately, the Dominion's threats were confirmed when she stepped out of line and they assassinated her. I apologize for any ambiguity.

Is it Magno Lad?

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Yes it is! Whom I obviously thought had come back in the Reboot as Magno - until I researched him and found out they had different real names.

On the one hand it seems like a missed opportunity on the Reboot writers' part to re-introduce a Preboot character, but on the other hand I guess they just didn't want to stack reader opinion even further against poor Dyrk when he already had the shadow of Rokk hanging over him.

And ultimately, I really liked the heroic journey Dyrk went on, which may never have happened if the writers had just fallen back on Cort's Preboot characterisation if it had been him in the role.

Anyway, over to you EDE.

For the reboot, no. There is a character who someone might think is a reboot version of the character, ala Magno and Magno Lad.

For the Glorithverse, I kind of mean something like that. There is a definite appearance by this character in a multi-Legion crossover, though it is not clear whether the version is from the Glorithverse or not, but might be argued to be.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

There are several potential semantic issues with that question which could leave any answer open to dispute.

'Join' can mean 'first join,' or (re)join for the umpteenth time.

the five years later era can refer to the 2994-5 era from the characters' points of reference, or for any story published during that era from the readers' point of reference.

but in general, most people would likely not describe this character as having joined during said era.

She was a reporter. Trudi Trusoe wasn't her real name - it was Hannah Wells.

She appeared in:

Legion Worlds 1 (reading the news)
Legion 6 (Kinetix saves her from the hypertaxis wave, only to get terrorformed herself. Dammit!)
Legion Secret Files 3003 (interviewing the Legionnaires and touring Legion World)
Can't remember the issue #s, but Gail Simone's four-parter where we learn she's really Hannah Wells. Trudi used to magnify the negative in her dealings, but decided to be true to herself and be a more responsible journalist after being inspired by the Legionnaires.

Posted by Blacula on :

Gosh - I have no recollection of that character whatsoever.

But if it's her fault that Kinetix got hypertaxised then I hate her immensely! [Big Grin]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Maybe we can retcon it so that it was Trudi Trusoe who got terrorformed, and all this time Kinetix has been stuck as one of those little ball-seed thingies!

[Kinetix] [Love]

Terra Man?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It is Terra-Man, who is the villain in the "Unnatural Alliances" episode of the Legion cartoon.

His name is synonymous with "Earth-Man". The pre-crisis version is from the 19th century, the post-crisis from the 20th, and the LSH cartoon version from the 41st century.

The LSH version is also a robot, and unlike other versions cannot pass for a present day human with the right clothing.

IT IS the infamous Ronald Morning! He who beget the brat that ruined the Legion-verse for some time!

Now during my background check for this character I came across some info that floored me -

I've always assumed he first appeared in the issue he died in, but according to Wikipedia he actually first appeared in a 1989 issue of The Atom (I assume it must mean Power of the Atom since that was the only Atom series published in 1989), which makes sense when you realise that that series was also written by Tom Peyer!

Since that series was pre-Zero Hour, that means Lori's Dad was technically a Preboot character - making him one of the few Legion characters that existed unchanged in both 'boots!

Interesting bit of trivia, huh?!

I actually have that Power of the Atom series waiting to be re-read so when I do I will keep my eyes peeled for the man whose daughter made me drop my favourite book for a while!

Cary Wren. She was a homeless descendent of Kyle Rayner who appeared in Green Lantern #97-99 when Kyle got thrown into the 30th century for a Legion guest-appearance, and had Kyle's ring for most of #99.

I'd mark it as for completists only. The Legion don't do a whole lot that's memorable.

Anyway, just confirming that Reboot did indeed get this round. over to you Boot!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Wasn't that the story with Particon and Radion as members of the Amazers?

Posted by Reboot on :

I think that was Legion of the Damned/Widening Rifts actually - certainly for Particon. Radion.... well, writers kept getting Radion and Atom'X mixed up for some reason (Legends of the Legion: Star Boy did it too - and in flashback, so there was no excuse. Namechecking Radion as an Amazer in Starman #49-50 might have been an editorial correction though, since Atom'X was "dead" by that point). I don't think the Amazers were anywhere near the GL arc, which bounced between Earth and where-Oa-once-was.

Anyway, there is a Legion character of which I am thinking.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

IIRC, the issue which showed Radion and Particon as Amazers was Starman 49-50, which guested Star Boy and Umbra alongside Jack Knight and Mikaal Tomas. The Amazers appeared briefly.

Legion of the Damned implied that Radion and Particon were still Amazers. They weren't seen again after that, though.

Did your Legion character exist in both the Preboot and the Postboot?

Posted by Reboot on :

To be fair, where Radion & Particon were left post-Workforce and with the Amazers losing Atom'X & Monstress after Mordru (not to mention KQ2 quitting not that much later), joining the Amazers was a perfectly reasonable direction for them. The only notable points are (1) that screw-up in LotL where Atom'X was called Radion and (2) the fact that neither appear with the Amazers in LSH #102.

I'd always felt that Particon would have made a decent Legionnaire. She had helpful energy powers (though ill-defined); besides the energy lance, I'm sure at least one panel showed her shooting energy bolts at Mordru, and Mysa mentioned that Particon helped deflect Mordru's final blast. She also performed well against Mordru, being the only non-Legionnaire besides Monstress who emerged uninjured (Blast-Off and Atom'x dead, Radion's face partially destroyed, Kid Q 2 and Dragonmage gravely injured, Mysa's magic spells not working properly).

Posted by Blacula on :

I really liked Particon but not as a Legionnaire.

A) because of the power lance (I am an originalist when it comes to the Legion Constitution haha);
B) because I like the idea of the Legion universe having a wealth of interesting and heroic characters that aren't necessarily Legionnaires (I am a BIG fan of both the Amazers and the Work Force if you couldn't tell); and
C) I feel the Legion was already crowded enough at that point - the writers started jamming way too many members onto the team way too quickly in the Reboot IMO - and she would have just taken attention away from all those other characters who were being neglected.

Re: the Green Lantern cross-over - I've just looked at the covers over on the Grand Comics Database. And who should I see front and center on one of them but the hated LeVIathan! [Mad] [Disgusting] I think I'll pass on tracking them down.

Back to the game - is your character from Earth?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

^ She didn't do much in the crossover. Spark, Comsic Boy, Ultra Boy, Live Wire and XS had much more panel time [Wink]

Re Particon, I was always under the impression that her lance was a manifestation of her innate powers. I can recall instances where her lance would appear out of nowhere, and I never saw a handle or anything that would indicate it was a piece of hardware.

Posted by Blacula on :

^ I always just assumed it was an external piece of hardware but it's been forever since I read those issues.

I must say though, that if she did have the power to summon/create those energy lances then that makes her 100 times cooler in my eyes.

I really like the idea of an energy caster who has to summon their energy in a specific form instead of just generic blasts (a la characters like Wildfire or the Lightning twins). I know Marvel has Psylocke and her energy knives but I can't think of any DC characters that can do it so it seems pretty unique to me.

You mean she just stood around in the background being inappropriately giant-sized for no reason?

At least the Green Lantern writers were up-to-speed with her post-power theft characterisation. [Wink]

Does your character have super-powers?

Re energy characters summoning their powers in a certain way, good point. Well, Zauriel has a flaming sword, but it's still an important distinction - it just happens to be a sword on fire, but it's not an innate power. With Particon (IF my interpretation is true), then you can't ever disarm her [Wink]

Re Violet - [LOL] I think you and I agree, though, that Titans/Legion Universe Ablaze was even MORE horrible about having Legionnaires stand around and be useless. Even when they were actually doing something, they were mostly useless!

Depends exactly how you define "governmental institution". I would say yes, but YMMV.

Is it Officer Kolkin?

It was S.P. Officer Vin Kolkin!

(The hesitation over "governmental institution" was because I wasn't sure whether Kent specifically meant political offices like the President/Parliament/etc and those who directly work for them, or just anything ultimately responsible to the government like the SP. As for his birth planet, it was never stated.)

Recap:

- no alias/codename
- appeared Postboot
- was female
- no inherent powers
- from Earth with parents from another planet
- not Gigi Cusimano
- Could pass for an ordinary 21st Century Earth person, with period appropriate clothing?

I should add a clarification to "no alias/codename" - this character did give herself an alias/nickname once.

The nickname I'm referring to was her calling herself Liaison Lass in LSH v4 Annual 6.

You're up, Eryk!

I could post a picture, but I think you'd be disappointed - while she's pretty violent (including putting a guy in a headlock at one stage!), her costume contains no royalty-themed imagery whatsoever!
