Suddenly Imra was sitting on the floor of the passageway outside of Science Lab 7. A glance told her that Gear was hard at work modifying the Temporal Damper, presumably following the instructions of Brainiac 5. But how were they communicating? She could feel and see the data flowing through her mind between Gear and Brainiac 5 but try as she might she couldn’t comprehend any of it. She began struggling to her feet; it was much harder than it should have been to move. The data flow running through her head was disorienting, causing her to have to think carefully about each and every movement she attempted.
“Steady, Imra, your part is almost done…”
Triad helped Saturn Girl to the feet as they watched the Doorway to the lab begin to glow with a strange shimmering luminescence.
“Gear and Brainy have adjusted the equipment to create a tunnel effect,” Lyle’s voice informed them. “It’s funny, and I really shouldn’t say this now, but ever since Gear started working with Brainy, he hasn’t blown up a single lab.”
“You’re right, Lyle, you shouldn’t have brought that up now…” Triad murmured, staring at the doorway, “let’s just hope you didn’t jinx this.”
“I need one of you to go in and start bringing them out. The tunnel is stable; all you need to do is touch this probe to each of them and direct them back out here.” Gear held a small probe out as he spoke, “The probe will automatically extend the TD Field over anything it touches. Be careful not to get too near the Crystalline Man.”
Lyle grabbed the probe a split second before Triad could reach it. “You need to be here to organize things as they come out,” he smiled, “I’ll be right back.”
“I don’t understand why you can’t just set a damper field around the lab and leave him there for now,” Kid Quantum’s voice sounded puzzled as she discussed the situation with Brainiac 5. “If we just hold him phase shifted in time, he can’t do anything while we investigate further and make a final decision.”
The time looped legionnaires had been retrieved from the lab, leaving the crystalline man as its sole occupant. Now the question of what to do about him was under serious discussion.
“It’s not that simple Jazmin,” Brainiac 5 replied, “we don’t understand his abilities. He caused that phase shift in an attempt to break through the force field. What else can he do that we don’t know about? I think we can hold him for a little longer, but…”

Stepping out of the threshold onto Legion World brought an immense feeling of relief to Ron.
Two hours later that feeling of relief was long gone and the prospect of facing his third debriefing session filled him with a feeling of dread. He didn’t really know what he expected to happen on their return but being instantly whisked into an interrogation room and questioned first by a Science Police Officer and then by a United Planets Diplomat would not have made his list of possibilities. A chance to shower and sleep for 12 hours topped his list when he stepped out of the threshold portal but it looked now like he wouldn’t get that for a while yet.
“Not what you expected, Rook?” Sgt. Dvron’s voice was tinted with amusement as he escorted Ron to the third debriefing. “I hate to say I told you so but the glory is reserved for the big shots. Them two Starhavenites are sitting up in the VIP lounge chatting with all their buddies while you and the lieutenant go through routine Decon & Debrief.”
“Well at least we know who they were and what they wanted. Now, I guess the question is; what do we do about it?”
“Not your problem, Rook. Although I think you get to talk to one of the Legionnaires next. They still have a problem with the crystalline guy up in science lab 7.”
“There’s a Podarian here?”
“Yeah, the one that was aboard the “Neptune Rising.”
Sensor and Karate kid were waiting inside the debriefing room along with Lt. Erin. To Ron’s surprise Lt. H’Bin’gr was also in the room and already hooked up to the recorders. He glanced at the screen and was surprised to see an image of himself in combat with the T’Jar forces aboard the alien ship.
“Interesting technique, but a trifle clumsy.” Karate Kid smiled as Ron took his assigned seat.
Up in the VIP Lounge Ambassador Greybird paced restlessly as Dawnstar talked quietly with Admiral Bloke and Chief Zendak. On the monitor screen in the corner opposite him the scene outside Science Lab 7 was being playing in real-time. They had arrived just as the trapped Legionnaires had been freed of the temporal loop and something about their predicament kept nagging at the back of his mind.
“Chief, how was that temporal loop generated?” He heard himself asking the question even as the answer popped into his mind. “And more importantly, when did it start?”

Science Police Lt. H’Bing’r ran a critical eye over the unusual lines of her new ship, UPSF Spannerhead, and wondered whether she’d made the right decision in accepting this new assignment. On one hand the assignment did come with her assuming command of a deep space vessel years earlier than she could have expected to under normal circumstances. On the other hand that vessel was an experimental craft designed to penetrate the galactic core. And with what she’d learned recently about the civilization that dominated that region of space, she wasn’t at all positive that she wanted to go there.
Still it wasn’t as if she was going alone, her crew would be made up of Legionnaires and hand picked Science Police veterans, and the mission was a necessary one…
Legion World: VIP Lounge
Up in the VIP Lounge Ambassador Greybird paced restlessly as Dawnstar talked quietly with Admiral Bloke and Chief Zendak. On the monitor screen in the corner opposite him the scene outside Science Lab 7 was being shown in real-time.
“We knew a signal was being sent to the retreating fleet but we didn’t know what it meant.” Brainiac 5 said thoughtfully. “Triad and Sensor jammed it just after the time loop was formed.”
“Which would explain why the loop on that ship vanished so abruptly. Hmmm… By cross checking the times we'll probably discover that the time loop onboard the alien ship started at the same time as the one in SL 7. Somehow the two must be connected.” Greybird handed his Omnicom to Brainiac 5. “I already downloaded all of this info to both the SP and UP databases, but you may come up with something they missed.”
“I don’t pretend to understand all of this.” Admiral Bloke’s gravelly voice caught their attention from across the room. “Why doesn’t the interior of Science Lab 7 appear on the monitor? We know it’s there, just 50 milliseconds out of time phase.”
Dawnstar’s reply silenced the lounge. “That’s because the lab is no longer there. It was there fifty milliseconds ago, but it isn’t now. Your eyes can’t register that difference, fifty milliseconds is too small a time interval for human senses to register properly, so you see it as blurred or transparent but still there. The monitors however, work much better than your senses. So they see the truth, right now Science Lab 7 is gone and all that exists where it was, is open space.”
Legion World: Science Lab 7
Just outside Science Lab 7, Jazmin and Imra stood gazing thoughtfully through the open door. Inside the lab the crystalline man, still frozen in the time loop stood silently. Next to them Gear and Lyle were placing the final additions on a portable containment field generator.
“Jaz are you positive that you’ve recovered enough to do this?”
“Do I have a choice?”
“Not really… But I’m still concerned. I don’t understand why you have to do this right now. Can’t we wait a while, at least until you can get some sleep?”
“He’s actively fighting the containment field, Imra. Sooner or later he’ll break through and Science Lab 7 will vanish into the time stream. He’ll be gone and the stress created by his departure could destroy Legion World.”

Hooray!! Chuck is gracing us with his wonderful writing again!
So, who's going on the mission in Spannerhead to the Core? Where exactly is SL7? When is the action going to re-start properly and things actually happen? ( runs and ducks after that one wotcha mean i'm confusing this with Ambers Song? )
