Well done, IB. Fun idea, even if the end result is not necessarily my ideal roster. It's funny to imagine characters like Blok and Monstress fighting alongside each other.

So we have:

11 Adventure Era members
3 70s Era
2 80s Era
2 Baxter Era
1 5 year gap
1 5 years later
5 Postboot Legionnaires

14 female and 11 male (I'm counting Gates and Tellus as male)

3 distinctly non-humanoid Legionnaires (Wildfire, Gates and Tellus) plus at least 4 more who are not your average human (Umbra, Dawnstar, Monstress, Nightwind), and then there's Blok, who's shaped like a humanoid bust certainly isn't!

We have a good mix of power, with both long-range and short-range fighters and some of the most powerful Legionnaires ever (Wildfire, Andromeda, Kid Quantum II, Kinetix).

In a nice departure, we have a lot of non-Caucasians (Karate Kid, Tyroc, Invisible Kid II, XS, Kid Quantum II).

We have a telepath, a teleporter, a precognitive and an illusionist, so this team can do espionage. Heck, I'd bet money on this team against almost any other team in comics.

Thanks Xben. I had a lot of fun, and this list is something I would never have predicted.

I'd like to thank you, Blacula, Dave Hackett, Reboot, Lard Lad, Quislet Esq. and Doctor One for voting. I hope I didn't miss anyone...

So, which among the 67 eliminated Legionnaires would you pick for the Legion reserve? (We could tally the votes, for fun)

My Reserve (not in order):

1. Brainiac 5
2. Shikari
3. Saturn Girl
4. Chameleon Boy
5. Infectious Lass
6. Gear
7. Element Lad
8. Magno
9. White Witch
10. Chameleon Girl

I'm having trouble adding more. I'd gravitate towards the eliminated "classic" ones like Cosmic Boy, Ultra Boy, Star Boy, Sun Boy. It just becomes too inclusive after that.

And to generate more discussion, who would YOUR ideal 25-member Legions have been?

My 25-member LSH based on favorites:

1. Kinetix
2. Gates
3. Brainiac 5 (Postboot)
4. XS
5. Kid Quantum II
6. Live Wire (Postboot)
7. Saturn Girl (Postboot)
8. Shikari
9. Monstress
10. Nightwind (Postboot)
11. Umbra (Postboot)
12. Apparition (Postboot)
13. Bouncing Boy (Postboot Chuck given powers)
14. Polar Boy
15. Chameleon (Postboot)
16. Infectious Lass (Postboot)
17. Andromeda (SW6)
18. Wildfire (Postboot)
19. Violet (Postboot)
20. Karate Kid (Postboot)
21. Triad (Postboot)
22. Dream Girl (Preboot)
23. Element Lad (Preboot)
24. Sensor Girl (Preboot)
25. White Witch (Preboot), Chameleon Girl, or Cosmic Boy (Postboot)

Monstress is only there because of Legion Lost, actually. I fell in love with her there.

Nightwind has had few moments in the comics, but I just love the character concept, and have always had a soft spot for her since I always felt she was robbed of Legion membership.

I know its weird having Cosmic Boy there, when I was the one who eliminated him, but I've been thinking about it and I do like the character.

Actually, after my Top 20 my liking for these Legionnaires drops significantly, and I have trouble picking people to fill my Top 25.

Now, my Ideal 25-Member LSH based on power and effectiveness would be:

1. Kinetix (she ain't leaving my roster!)
2. Gates
3. Saturn Girl (telepaths are useful, and I prefer her to Tellus)
4. Brainiac 5 (Legion could function without him, but... why let go of the advantage?)
5. Shikari (always good to know where your enemy is)
6. Wildfire
7. Dreamer (Postboot - more effective visions)
8. Andromeda
9. Karate Kid (for combat training [Big Grin] )
10. Sensor Girl (she could single-handedly turn a battle around by concealing the team)
11. XS
12. Kid Quantum II
13. Dragonmage OR White Witch (I'd prefer variety, so only one mage please!)
14. Element Lad
15. Gear (31st century is full of tech)
16. Infectious Lass (can take down any organic enemy)
17. Polar Boy
18. Chameleon OR Chameleon Girl
19. Umbra (Postboot - darkfield was more versatile)
20. Chemical King
21. Star Boy (Postboot OR Retroboot Starman - the one with full gravity powers)
22. Ultra Boy
23. Kono (extremely versatile)
24. Neon
25. Nightwind (I think she could grow to control weather systems, not just wind)

Definitely an interesting team. It's a team I'd really like to read about actually - much more so than the group that are in the book currently.

You forgot Blok from your list of distinctly non-humanoid Legionnaires by the way IB.

Interesting that only 2 of the Legion couples stayed intact (3 if you count Dawnstar and her can't-take-a-hint stalker Wildfire) - Chuck & Lu and Val & Jeckie. And those are probably the two with the least amount of time as a couple in the Legion of all.

It seems like there's a good variety of powers, but without some of the traditional Legion powers - no magnetism, no magics, no super-smartness, no transmutation, no shape-shifting, no fire/heat generation, no gravity control.

It's certainly a diverse team too. Having only four caucasian males on board is an obvious signal that this isn't the 50s Legion anymore. Ditto having the girls outnumber the guys. I like it.

It's definitely not the 25 I would have chosen (I'll have to come back later to give that) but it's 25 that I'm sure would provide a lot of interesting story material - and, really, that's all I want out of a Legion team.

Honestly, I don't think I'd ever want to see a team fully comprised of my "favorites". I figure I'd probably be disappointed either about some of them having a lack of spotlight or else being handled more poorly than I'd envision them being. And of course, if someone dies...it's automatically a favorite!

Also, there's a certain comfort in seeing Legionnaires there who may not be favorites but whose presence is a kind of comfort food. Plus, I'm often surprised by how writers take a familiar character and do something new with him or her, thereby giving characters a chance to become a favorite. It's happened for me a number of times with the LSH.

Whoops, I did forget Blok. Sorry for the oversight; since he's humanoid-shaped, he slipped my mind. But I should have included him in the list of non-human Legionnaires.

Good point on the downsides of having a team full of favorites, Lardy. There are just some characters who enhance the team even though they're not so well-liked.

In any case, I'm very happy with the final lineup of our game. I'd definitely buy a book featuring these 25.

My ideal 25 really depends on which incarnation of the Legion we're talking about. If I was picking for the current Retroboot, I'd pick different characters than I'd do if we were getting the Reboot back. For example, for the Reboot, I'd want Lyle on the team, but in the Retroboot, I prefer him as one of the honored dead (just like he was when I was reading back in the day).

I guess if we had a brand new boot going on that I was picking for, I'd probably go for: Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Triad, Phantom Girl, Chameleon Boy, Invisible Kid I, Ultra Boy, Brainiac 5, Sun Boy, Shrinking Violet, Element Lad, Spark, Dream Girl, Sensor Girl, Shadow Lass, Timber Wolf, Wildfire, Blok, Quislet, XS, Gates, Kent Shakespeare (though I'm not clear on what his powers were, so that'd be flexible), Shikari, Star Boy, and either Andromeda or Supergirl. I'd keep non-powered Chuck Taine as an engineer, Tenzil Kem as a funny lawyer, and maybe Cosmic Boy as the retired head of the reserves a la his brief run in the Substitutes. Maybe Mon-El showing up from time to time as a space wanderer.

Of course if it was written well than the roster we picked could work, but I think I'd find it really odd to be reading a Legion book minus so many of the classic characters as we picked.

Lots of leader-types and past leaders available. Lightning Lad, Sensor, Dream Girl, Kid Quantum II, etc.

I'd go with Wildfire. He has it too easy, playing the snarky doesn't-play-well-with-others jerk who always criticizes the leader's decisions behind their back (or, occasionally, right in their face). Putting him in the big chair forces him to put his money where his mouth is, and, as I recall, he lives up to the challenge well!

.

My quirky team would skip a lot of my absolute favorites; Shadow Lass, Phantom Girl, Ultra Boy, etc. and focus on the 'Legion of One World,' composed entirely of Legionnaires who only existed in one of the three main continuities (Classic, Reboot, Threeboot).

So, people like Tellus and Quislet and Tyroc and Chameleon Girl and Dawnstar and Shikari and Gear and Reflex and Kinetix and Gates and Gazelle and Sizzle and Turtle and Dream Boy and Theena, but no Founders, no Brainy, etc. *None* of the 'classics.'

That is a team I'd love to at least read a miniseries about. It would also be a good way to see how enduring the Legion would be as a concept - if you take away a lot of the familiarity, are they still truly the Legion?

Good point, Xben. Some characters fit certain contexts and settings better. For example, I could never really imagine Spider-Girl on any team besides TMK/Legion on the Run.
