The Blondes have had their fun, now it's time for the colors to change...

I'm sure there are enough redheads to fill a competition like this, but there are not many brown haired characters, so they get to join the reds. Those with black hair will not be counted. They'll surely get their own competition.

As always, there is a form to fill out...

1. At first, the fair haired competition was allowing those with light red hair, and Lana Lang, aka Insect Queen, was receiving enough nominations to be included. Would you like to see her be a contestant in this competition, or host? Remember, the host is never eliminated.

2. If not Lana, who else would you like to see host the challenge? Dream Girl and Light Lass have been hosts in previous competitions. New nominations are welcome.

3. Who would you like to see judge this competition? Judges from previous competitions are eligible, but new nominations are invited.

4. Who would you like to see compete in this competition? Like in the blonde competition, there will be 5 female and 5 male contestants to start off. Sentients off all ilk are welcome, villains, supporting cast, Legionnaires themselves. List however many you please...

5. List some items that are typically red...some, or who knows? maybe all, will be included in a challenge. Try to be clever, Legionverse related items get first priority.

6. Any locations in mind? Think reds and browns.

7.Anything else?

Me first!

1. At first, the fair haired competition was allowing those with light red hair, and Lana Lang, aka Insect Queen, was receiving enough nominations to be included. Would you like to see her be a contestant in this competition, or host? Remember, the host is never eliminated.

I vote for her to host.

2. If not Lana, who else would you like to see host the challenge? Dream Girl and Light Lass have been hosts in previous competitions. New nominations are welcome.

NA

3. Who would you like to see judge this competition? Judges from previous competitions are eligible, but new nominations are invited.

I'd like to see the return of Saturn Girl. I liked Princess Elwinda as a judge. I don't know about the "grumpy" one this time. We need a grump!

4. Who would you like to see compete in this competition? Like in the blonde competition, there will be 5 female and 5 male contestants to start off. Sentients off all ilk are welcome, villains, supporting cast, Legionnaires themselves. List however many you please...

Triad, Spider Girl, Uli Algor, XS, Charma
Ultra Boy, Jed Rikane, Don Allen, Reflecto, Officer Dvron

5. List some items that are typically red...some, or who knows? maybe all, will be included in a challenge. Try to be clever, Legionverse related items get first priority.

Superman's cape, the L on preboot hq, devils, Starburst Bandits, apples, balloons

6. Any locations in mind? Think reds and browns.

Mars, Earth in the fall, volcanoe with lava flowing, Hell (eek!)

1) Lana as a contestant. Have a red-headed Mysa be the host.

3. Judges: Lester did a good job. Bring back Saturn Girl. And for color, Dr. Mayavale

4. Lana Lang, Sun Boy, Lightning Lad, Jimmy Olsen, Fire Lad. If there is time, I may add some more as I think of them.

5. The Starburst Bandits are red, aren't they? Walking Money, um um um Strawberries.

6.Actually a green jungle would be cool as a contrast. Having them be in outer space in trans suits would be cool too.

Ooh Ooh I second Triad and XS

What about pink hair? Does that fit with the redheads, or will there be a pink/blue/green/purple Rainbow Brite group later?

(I am still keen on Ji Daggle.)

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Thanks for the early-on suggestions!

I do plan on an "Alien" competition, where Ji would be a prime candidate, and to be honest, I want that one to be all female. I think starting with a higher number of contestants could be do-able, though.

Still, I hereby allow Ji Daggle's nomination here. All you have to do is get her seconded....

Spider-Girl, (red) White Witch, Lana Lang, Titania, Shvaugn Erin, Triad (she can have three hairstyles and three poses in a single picture, that cheater!)

Lightning Lad, Fire Lad, Ultra Boy, Colossal Boy, Karate Kid

For a judge, someone without hair. A bewildered Blok, or resigned Tellus, or exuberant Quislet, wondering what all the fuss is about, could be amusing.

Spider-Girl would be my first choice for hostess, because the hostess is the one that gets to appear in the most pictures with the most styles, and Spider-Girl has the most to work with...

For the backdrops / scenes, perhaps one of the figure in action, kicking the butt of something that is red or brown, like Tyr or a blazing meteorite.

Will there be a 'bald and beautiful' challenge for people like Yera Allon and Sharn Nux? [Smile]

1. Why not Lana to compete?

2. Lady Mysa (postboot) as host.

3. For the grumpy judge, how about the postboot Leland McCauley? Saturn Girl to keep order, and Mayavale to keep comparing the contestants to their past lives (I should have a list of redheads from history in one of my books, if that'll help you with scripting?).

4. Females: Lana Lang, Kinetix, Ji Daggle, Triad, XS
Males: Live Wire, Dirk Morgna (post-Elementals), Invisible Kid, Ultra Boy, Reflecto

5. Starburst Bandits, for the action scene. For a costuming idea, everyone dress like Laurel Kent? [Wink]

6. Mars is good, or the Painted Desert if you want a larger range of colors to work with.

That would give Sketch Lad a chance to draw more of the Fatal Five? Tharok and the Persuader are bald. And I think the nimbused version of Mano would count with the "special cases". [Wink]

Contestant suggestions:

MEN
Don Allen
Dev-Em, Stone Boy, Quake Kid, Tab!, Myron Marks.
and P-Pete, unless there's a contest better suited to him.

WOMEN
Ji Daggle, Spider Girl, X-Bomb Betty
Esper Lass, XS

Hosts:
I'd like to see Lu & Lana team up for the job! They're groovy gals, they fought Mordru together, and they have something else in common....

JUDGES:
Hey, how about one of the Devil's Jurors?
Styx & Stiletta?
Magpie? He has a good eye.

Guest Judges, etc:
Flynt Brojj
Wild Huntsman and Calamity King in a Wear A Hat challenge.
Mekt (hair temp. back to its original red color) and Beauty Blaze (playing up the orange-red bits of her mane), the projected winners of the GP competition, to do intro/outro on the nigh inevitable Red Hot challenge.

Here's an update...

I was composing my update while Teeds was posting! Here's the new one....

Top contenders...

Mysa has received 3 noms for host.
Lana has received 2. This is a tight race, which could affect Lana's spot as a competitor!

Saturn Girl and Dr. Mayavale have received 3 noms each for judge. Quislet and Braino have 2 each. There are several other judges nominated, so this is not over.

The Starburst Bandits and Mars will definitely feature in this contest.

Now for the contestants...

WOMEN
Luornu Durgo is the leader with 6 nominations. Don't worry about if she's Triad or Triplicate Girl or Duo Damsel or whatever.

Spider Girl has received 5.

XS and Lana have received 4.

Currently, Ji Daggle and Uli Algor are battling for the final spot, but it's still early. Kinetix has one vote behind them, and there are lots of other nominees.

MEN
Ultra Boy leads with 4 noms.

Jed, Reflecto, Sun Boy, Lightning Lad, and Fire Lad are all tied with 3 noms each.

Don Allen, Colossal Boy, Invisible Kid and Myron Marks are right behind with 2 noms each.

Things can change!

There are a lot of weird judge nominations this time! I like the idea of using Saturn Girl as she looked in her debut, I call her Saturn-Girl-247. I'll have to re-read my Dr. Mayavale issue (love the Perez cover!) and Who's Who listing.

If Quislet is chosen, I'll need some pointers from his fans as to how to write him. I don't think I'm up to re-reading all his appearances.

I'll need issue numbers for Braino and Double-Header. Did D-H become a Sub?

Anyway, that's all for after the voting...

Okay, Sussa and Uli, you need to come in with your Super A-Game...of Space. Check this out.

Of 14 contestants

8 are Legionnaires: Lu, Jenni, Lana, Zoe, Jo, Dirk, Val, Garth

1 is a Sub: Staq

1 is an Academy student: Jed

2 are LSH Friends/Family: Don, Ji

That leaves you two to represent the villains. Hell, you 1.5 because Spider Girl has been back and forth. Sussa --- and mind you, I'm saying this only in regard to this competition --- girl, be bad. Deliciously bad.

There was a redhead girl
Who had sentient curls
all o'er her head
When she was good, she was very good
But when she was bad she was drop-dead

You sure don't make this easy. There's enough pretty in this contest to make sentinents faint left and right.

For the boys, I'd vote out

Jed Rikane
Don Allen

XS
Spider Girl

Only under duress, though, since none of the female contestants look bad in any way.

LU. Not wild about the hair, but this is Lu.

FIRE LAD. He has the advantage of always being interesting to look at -- now let's see what he'll do with it.

KINETIX. Nice colors.

DON ALLEN. Hey, check out that kinda mischievous expression. Fun Loving Allen, Super Hero indeed. More Don! Like the colors here too.

INSECT QUEEN. See you in the next round, Lana!

SUN BOY. Hmm.

XS. Cute. (But I hate the rat tail.)

KARATE KID. Yowzah. Dang, Val! The one to beat?

SPIDER GIRL. Yes, Sussa, yes.

POWER BOY. Nice but not spectacular -- but Jed has potential. I wanna see more.

ULI ALGOR. Yes. The new pink color is fabulous.

LIGHTNING LAD. Nice enough, but give us more, Garth. Be more like your brother. (Ha, ha, ha!)

JI DAGGLE. She is in.

ULTRA BOY. I like long hair and I can like the scruffy look, but I can't like this. Yeccch! Is Storm Boy still in the building? Shower, stat!

OUT:

SUN BOY and ULTRA BOY

the ladies were much more difficult. Regretfully,

LU and KINETIX

Uli (I just am not familar enough with the character to want to see more)

Thank heavens (& hell) we only have to get rid of one male & female! Two would be impossible.

Vote out Ji and Jo.

Garth was amazing, he really seemed the most devilish of all. Loved Kinetix' forked heels. XS never looked better - maybe bad girl suits her. Val - very impressive, how he got that all burnt black look.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

The devils...

Jo: well, if hell was what it took to clean him up, then hell it is. Oh, and I think I'm getting all Imra 'cause I can almost hear him thinking I'm horny. Get it? Horny!

Lana: saucy! Looks like the most fun devil of the lot. The horn-rimmed glasses are sassy and funny and v. Lana.

Garth: ohhh, very nice. The suave devil. The posture is a tad stiff, but overall, a hellfire of a way to kick off the competition. Have you been taking charming-yet-subtly-menacing lessons from someone we know?

Jenni: I'm not sure what to think about this one.

Staq: your flame-hair gets lost a bit in the pic. Maybe that's where your clothes got lost too.

Zoe: Hades' Next Top Supermodel!

Val: I think people are either going to love this or not get it. I'm in the "don't get it" camp. It seems more demon than devil. Yeah, yeah, Blue Devil, but no...still don't get it.

Lu: well, I love the hair. On the not so good side -- and this may be my monitor -- one of my first thoughts was why is she wearing red and BLUE? And I don't think those closed-toed shoes (stilettos or not) go with a bathing-suit style ensemble unless you are working a 2982 beauty contest vibe. (I don't recommend that.)

Don: Dang, Don! Why does a fiery devil wear red suspenders? It ain't to keep them hot pants up. SatyriDon!

Ji: no extraneous whatnot; direct and dramatic.

VOTE OUT:

Jenni

and

Val although I hope everyone else gets his pic because I want him to advance.

ON NOTICE: LU, because you're one of my girls and I hate having to contemplate voting you out, especially so early on.

Great work, Dean, these are really excellent! My favorites are Garth and Xs.
Exorcise Lana and Fire Lad.

Huh, I promised myself I'd be voting out Don Allen, but Fire Lad's gotta go.

Garth and Jo got it very, very right. I could even say, 'tho I shouldn't, that they look hot.

Karate Kid, a bit too subtle, just missed, but still not as bad as Fire Lad.

I grudgingly admit that Don Allen deviled up better than I expected.

As for the girls, Ji and XS are my favorites, although, XS looks like she might have a baby on board under that shifty black scrap of lingerie. I imagine it's supposed to look like it's loose and moving in the hot air, all sultry like, but the motion didn't capture well.

Ji is just perfect with her mistress manipulator suave look. If I had to pick a winner this round, she'd be it. (And Lightning Lad would be the one escorting her off the stage.)

Kinetix is good. Nice 'kinetic' feel to the artwork.

Lana is just so vanilla, even in Hell! Ooh, a bowtie. Now I'm having Crossfire flashbacks.

But Triplicate Girl gets my vote to skeedaddle, 'cause she looks like she had a tri-vote to pick a theme and decided to compromise and go in three directions at once... Flesh-colored horns? No.

So, get thee behind me Fire Lad and Triplicate Girl!

I'm voting out Jenni and Staq.

And I'm thinking Lana and Garth would make a cute couple.

I'll vote out Ji and Fire Lad. Mainly because they disappeared too much into their role-playing.

Posted by Insomniac Girl on :

XS look fantastic! I also like Ji and Jo very much. For myself, I’ve come to the conclusion that more nekkidness doesn’t necessarily equal more fiendishness. Who knows what vice lies behind Garth’s suave, well-clad exterior? Being kept in the dark and only being able to imagine is much more fun.

Exorcise Karate Kid (I don’t get him either) and Insect Queen.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

OK, for the women, it was an easy choice. XS. I don't like the ragged look.

For the guys, it is a toss up between Fire Devil, Tornado Devil, & Karate Devil. I think Don Allen should have gone for the dapper image Lightning Devil went for. It would have suited him better (no pun intended). Both Fire Devil and Karate Devil you don't get a sense of the character coming through (Thinking back I could say the same for Lightning Devil, but he looked so dapper) At least with Fire Devil, you do see the flaming hair.

So reject Karate Devil.

After voting, I read other people's comments and me and TD voted the same way. Scary!

Ji Daggle 2 votes
Triplicate Girl 1 vote

FIRE LAD & XS

Lana: I think it's extremely sexy that she can make anything vanilla. Very silver age and fitting!

Ji: HOT! Same with Zoe.

But overall, the guys totally take this round.

Wasn't impressed with Lu this time; she looked much better in her intro picture. She's out.

Harder to choose for the guys, but Don Allen out. Nice face, but the suspenders effect just doesn't work.

Lana is among the good-est of the Good Girls, and any Good Girl worth her sugar can -- when she has the notion -- serve up a slice of cheesecake.

Hey, where are the judges? Has there been another Incident?

Well, other than someone murdering Mayavale. That's to be expected.

Polls are closed! The Fire of Hell and the Sin of XS have been exorcised! Now our nice little Staq and Jenni can go back about their regular business.

You've heard from the judges now, as well.

The jungle challenge is being postponed while we figure out what was up with those plants! So weird.

The models are fine, they're even a little bored as we work to come up with another challenge for them.

I suppose productions like this one have these kind of hurdles all the time. I wish it wasn't so!

Stay tuned...

You should have hired Chlor right from the start. That's what you get for trying to cut corners and save money.

Another calamity? Get the space-calamine!

Then I must insist you give Marla a call. Let him handle the administrative stuff so you can focus on The Art. And talk to Pam -- she probably knows some good space-accountants. Do you really want to get into financial trouble and then be taken over by McCauley Enterprises? I'll bet Leland's totally a back-seat sketcher.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

We artists sometimes cannot contain our excitement at finding that perfect backdrop! Hence, the haste.

Rest assured, Policy Pam has been a great ally in our business dealings. Marla and his team keep us out of trouble, most of the time, too.

We're currently on Mars, everything is safe here. The Auburn models are looking GREAT! Stay tuned...

Update....

REVOLT OF THE AUTUMN AUBURNS!

After the fiasco in the jungle, we thought everything would be pleasant and safe on serene Mars, which has been true, but the problem is, everything is too safe and serene on Mars. The models are bored and refuse to just "stand there, wearing red against a red background."

All eight contestants have stated that they wish to "do something" and that they wish "to not conform to the same restraints in every challenge."

Naturally, we wish only happiness for our cast, therefore, a new challenge will be created for them, featuring 8 completely unique images. This, of course, will take more time, but all agree that it should be worth it.

Thank you for your patience. We feel like the sentients of the Legionverse deserve only the best, not simply that which is "done."

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I figured this would be a fine time to share my ideas for how this constest was planned.
I *was* going to do it this way...
Top 10- Sexy Devils
Top 8- Red focal points in greenery
Top 6- Wearing Red on Mars
Top 4- Facial Close-ups in fuzzy sweaters
Top 2- Winners magazine cover style

However, this cast does not like to conform so readily, so there will be far more customization of their challenges. I already have a new idea for the top 8. Should be cool. I'm always open to other ideas, so don't hold back....

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Maybe a humorous one. Have each of the contestants doing something ditzy

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Actually, that plan above seems wrong to me now...I had planned on using the Sunburst Bandits... I'm all confused...feeling kinda ditzy...

However, I am pleased with my new idea for the top 8.

They took the devil challenge to heart, Sketchy! *tee hee!*

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Alright, things are going much better for the top 8 challenge, finally. There's more going on in each picture, so everyone's happy, including the art director! Whew! I was starting to think the top 8 were never going to complete a challenge!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I'm about halfway through this one. It'll be probably a couple more days...

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

All the pencilling for the challenge is done. I need to create the judges' commentary still, then scan and color everything. Boy, this one has taken a while, but I do believe it will be worth the extra time and cutting the other themes. It'll be more fun.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Finished the colors. LOVE it! I want to add judges comments, but that'll take more time...

Question...would eliminating the judges comments matter to anyone, really?

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

It does matter to me because I like them. However, if it makes things easier for you to eliminate them, so be it.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Quis,
Good enough for me! I'm more than happy to create the judges portion of this competition.

I realize that the Auburns are taking a while to get anywhere, but I think things will get right on track again and be some of the most fun we've had with a Pinup Model competition!

So, hang in there, the judges will be chiming in soon!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

I like the judges too. Really, go back to the first Supermodel and try to imagine it without Imra, Marte, and Sarya.

Today, I wrote the judges' commentary. Pretty fun! I do look forward to adding in some guest judges, too. I guess I was getting a lil impatient. Worth the effort and wait, I hope.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Get ready! The Top 8 Autumn Auburn challenge is finally being posted.....

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Done!

Well, I had a lot of fun with this challenge! May I count the ways?

1. Matching Legionverse races with the colors of the rainbow! I had to add brown, but that's cool, right? Indigo and Violet were actually kinda hard. I totally forgot about Gates! I was *sure* there'd be more purple people in Legion comics, but the Athramites fit the bill well, especially paired with Zoe.

2. DANCING! What kind would they do? How comfortable would they be? All fun to think about and depict.

3. Naming the dances!

4. Having the judges flirt with such issues as racism and religion! I mean, it can't just be judging the images can it?

5. Getting feedback?

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Oh yeah, please vote for the male and the female Autumn Auburn who should be REJECTED! Thanks.

DANCING WITH THE STARS...IN SPACE!

First up, let me say how lovely the colors are.

Ji is on fire. Yowtch, hot! And two lads for every Ji...nicely arranged, Ms. Daggle.

Garth: looks good, but again, a bit stiff. Or is it meant to be? I guess it could be the dance, but "Durlan" tends to suggest more fluidity. (Look at his dance partner. The holocam seems to have caught her in mid-shift.)

Lu: due to the way I was scrolling, my first view of this was from her ribcage(s?) up. It took me a minute to realize I should look for more. This is gorgeous even cropped! The bright sunshine-y yellow really becomes my girl, who is beyond a doubt off notice.

Jo: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! He's doing a nice enough lift, but that expression is pure dip. And hey, did Sebastian Shaw do your hair? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Lana: Brava! The wardrobe and styling is first-rate. A beautiful, classical F.U. to S-boy for that Zynthia episode. (Here's sand in your eye, Stupidboy!) Attitude indeed. And who better to assist than a stunning, hunky Talokian? If there's an ugly Talokian we've never seen 'im.

Don: Divine. He goes waltzing...after midnight (blue). Oh, that color. And kudos to his charming partner, who had to adapt the many-legged Vyrgan dance for the lad with merely two.

Zoe: Z. and her Athramite pals are having such a good time that you want to smile too! But she is tragically overdone.

Val: alert Marzal temporal timeline buffs: one of the magical island's appearances coincided with rise of the popular tune "Rico Suave". A little attitudinal for Val, but I have no problem with it. Coloring particulary nice here.

I think this is one of my favorite challenges in all the SUPERMODELs!

Oh, and I guess I have to vote.

OUT:

JO

and, I'm afraid,

ZOE
though I'd rather vote twice for Jo and keep all the girls.

PS: Dr. Gym'll, are you OK? You look a little gray at times. Have you taken your space vitamins? Or is this just a early-Hulk-style printing prob?

I've gotta second Teeds' votes. Jo and Zoe really let me down this time... [No]

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I vote Ji and Jo.

Posted by Set on :

Hm, a tough one.

I don't really know Ji Daggle from a hole in the wall, but she's hot. Saturn Girl does have a point that she doesn't seem to be dancing so much as posing in front of Tyrellian beefcake.

Disco gives me trauma, so I'll just repress Garth's entry and move along. More hot Durlan woman tho, making it worth a peek through the fingers as I try to block the image...

Oh, Lu, I never really liked your cutesy pageboy girl(s)-next-door look, but here? Best entry in this grouping. Very nice.

[Flails around with cane to the theme of 'Stayin Alive,' having been rendered blind by Jo's entry.]

Lana, how much I loathe thee thanks to some show called Smallville. Blue, also, not your color. Green would go better with your hair. Being set on fire would go even better with your hair tho. I'm just sayin...

I grudgingly admit that Don looks dapper in a tux. And he's showing amazing open-mindedness to be dancing with a multi-limbed communist bug-seal-thing in a tiara.

Kinetix, if you Donna Summer that hair up any higher, it's going to need a permit. And back away from the accessories, this isn't a nomadic society, you don't have to wear everything you own all at once!

Val, keepin' it real. Word, as they say.

So I'm voting out Jo, for the boys, because I just can't handle the ponytail.

As for the girls, it's a hard one. I wanted to vote out Lana, 'cause she's a witch and I hate her, but really, Kinetix has got to be punished for going all 'my little pony' with the sparklies.

So, outsville for Jo and Kinetix. Maybe I'll catch up with Lana and Don later, as they openly defy me with their staying power...

Posted by Pizza Delivery Girl on :

Reject, regretfully, Lana and Jo.

It's too bad we can't keep their dance partners around, though. [Wink]

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Jo out, since I don't believe that Coluan dance #26Z-822 allows smiles.

Kinetix out, since she's her usual over-the-top self, which distracts from the performance for me (even if that costume is part of the dance). Lana missed getting the slipper by recognition of all the training it takes for classical ballet.

Garth and Don: very cool! And Lu really outdid herself here! Kudos to Val for hittin' the streets.

Posted by Doctor One on :

Ji: Oh, she's dancing allright. We just caught her at a quieter moment. One of my favourites this time around. She'll probably shape-shift in a minute and flow all over her tyrrazian companions...

Garth: Meh. Looks a bit stiff to me... I also think that a Durlan dance should involve constant shape-shifting.

Lu: Yeah! My favourite Lu picture in this competition.

Jo: Meh. I think my main problem with this one is that I think that a Coluan dance should look different. Not that I'm an expert in Coluan dancing, mind you... Jo's smirk also looks weird.

Lana: I hate ballet and I hate Lana. This picture is pretty good, but my prejudices (and the fact that all other female dancers are just better) will probably force me to vote Lana out.

Don: I laughed out loud when I saw this one. Because of that he stays.

Kinetix: I actually like this picture quite a bit, with all the big hair and everything. Lots of accessories, but this IS an athramite dance after all.

Val: My favorite of the males. He really got it right in this one.

So, reject Jo and Lana.

Posted by Insomniac Girl on :

Wow, will there ever be an end to you getting better and better? [Smile]

Ji: While this is certainly a very pretty picture and Ji is looking sultrily beautiful, I have to agree with Saturn Girl here. With only such a small part of the dancers shown there's just not enough of a sense of movement there or any distinctive dancing style recognisable, which puts Ji at a severe disadvantage compared to the others.

Garth: Ahahaha! Love it. Garth's arched-out chest, the hand positioning, the costumes... words fail me, except for maybe Disco Lives!

Lu: I have no idea what a Sklarian is, but they certainly pale in comparison to super-radiant Luornu, even if everyone's perfectly synchronised - what skill! That golden yellow really flatters Lu.

Jo: Argh. Is an alternate name for that dance the Log Lift? That's at least what it looks like what Jo is doing - he seems to be lacking any of the finesse necessary to make him a good dancer. Well, at least he seems happy in a "look what I found" way. I'd say as well that I just can't imagine Coluans having such fanciful, frivolous dances, if any at all.

Lana's production of Sand Wasp Lake leaves me oddly cold. I can't even put my finger on what it is that makes me dislike it - apart from me starting to really hate her mask.

Don: While I don't particularly care for Don, his has to be my favorite entry. There's so much grace, poise and dignity displayed here! Full marks to him and his charming partner.

Kinetix: Now that is truly a satorial disaster (bad Athramites, bad!). Still, they're all emanating such a sense of fun that it's simply infectious. Well, at least I can't help being charmed by their little number.

Val: Such attitude. How very tough. How very street. How very I just can't come up with a good comment.

Reject Ji and Jo.

(Love the judges - those contests wouldn't be the same without them. Dr. Gym'll's been cracking me up this time around especially.)

Posted by MLLASH on :

I'm definitely voting out JO for the guys.

I'll have to come back later and figure out which girl to vote out; I love Ji, Zoe and Lu here, but can't yet bring myself to vote out Lana. (Why all the Lana hate anyway? I've never seen SMALLVILLE; is this show giving her a bad rep? I'm glad my first exposure to her was through old S/LSH issues and not the tv show).

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

S'okay Lash, you can abstain from rejecting a girl this time. Zoe had more votes than the others so she can't be saved at this point. Jo had it even worse...he's unanimously rejected!

I've already finished pencils on every part of the next round..the host, the contestants and the judges. Stay tuned!

I am dyin' for Sketchy's AA8 pic-by-pic commentary!

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

That's my cue!

Rainbow colors (plus brown)

Aliens that exist in the Legionverse

Dancing

It took forever to get all that together, but once it was decided, then it was a matter of matching.

I did want Ji to give a sort of Britney/Beyonce/Madonna vibe. Very sexy herself, and hanging with hot, scantily clad men.

Garth needed a more conservative dance, but nothing boring. I liked the idea of a monochromatic composition, so with his hair, he got the orange spot. I wanted Garth's picture to be fun but keep in mind that he has *always* been attached to Imra.

**Here's a note...in the animated series threads, I seem to consistently whine about them using random background characters when they *could* use existing ones from the books. So what do I do when I need a Tryazzian and a Durlan? Do I cast Tyr or Yera? NO! I use unknowns! Hypocrite!**

I wanted Val for yellow, so I could put him in his preboot fancy collar, but it had to be a girl. I didn't want Lana because her Insect Queen costume is already yellow. Lu it is! Naturally, I put her with 2 Sklarians (get it? so there'd be 3 total?). Notice it's the Supremecy dance? Supremes? [Smile]

I was going to have Jo just do the male version of what Ji did. But I figured there should be something different. I know he has a goofy look on his face, but I thought he was charming. Uh, that Coluan girl is HOT, btw! I liked the idea that the Coluans number their dances.

I recall a Lana ballet scene from one of the early Superboy stories in the Legion archives, so I decided to bring that here. It's simple and lovely, if I do say so myself.

Indigo! Who the frik has indigo colored skin in Legion comics? I poured through most of my Archive Editions and all of my Who's Who issues. Nothing. Finally, I looked at my postboot collection and DUH! Gates! Now, what to do? Putting Don in indigo naturally evolved into a tuxedo, and then the rest of the picture painted itself!

Violet. Okay, plenty of violet (okay...purple) people in Legion comics, right? I looked for them the same time as I looked for the indigo ones. Nothing. Was Dr. Mayavale purple? He looked grey sometimes. Yes, Teeds, I think he suffered from Hulk-itis sometimes. Then, right around the same time that I found Gates, I found the Athramites. Okay, they're kinda lavendar, but it was in the *family.* I was gonna have one stand on another's shoulders with an overcoat on, and do a box step with Zoe. In fact, that might have been a more charming idea, but I quite liked the idea of having several of them all around Zoe.

It was easy to choose brown as the extra color. I'm very happy with KK's depiction and his lovely backup dancers.

After not one but two cancelled "shoots" for the top 8, I was more than pleased with the results of this third try!!

Thank you to all the voters and for all the commentary. I LOVE IT!

Hey, I like the next challenge, too. Stay tuned!

ZOE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SQUARE DANCING WITH THE ATHRAMITES!!!!

Oh, so late....

Oh yeah, when I couldn't think of any indigo colored characters, I was going to draw Don with the Indigo Girls, colored ...indigo... and say they were from the planet Indigo, but luckily I found that picture of Gates....

Dr. Mayavale's perceptions are colored by all the mist-huffing, I'm sure.

Now, Dr. Gym'll is purple. Every Jaquaan I can think of: Gym'll, Ryk'rr, Kw'ss-- is purple.

There's also the Purple Eyestalk Guys (probably not the official term) such as Gruertis Nyebif.

Power Boy has purple skin... it's a side effect of this Earth boy's powers, though.

FISH & BIRDS, OR: THE ONE WHERE NO ONE WEARS A SHIRT

Val. KK as a Thanagarian seems very natural. The pose, not so much. (Try to put your chin up that high and see what I mean.)

Lana. The eyebrows have it! She's got it, she knows it. Love the underwater "updo"! Nice makeup.

Garth. Or should I say "Warren Worthington"? Either way, are you all right? You look a bit concerned, and your right arm isn't right.

Ji. Lovely. Nice touch on the antennae shapes (reminds me of something, will have to get back on it).

Don. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one and decide that the stock-still "pose" is for aerodynamic purposes.

Lu. Oh, the smile playing at her mouth. She looks like she's about to burst right out of the holo! Leave it to Lu to give us 3D in 2D. Dang, girl.

OUT:

GARTH

and

JI (the personality shown by the other two trumps Ji's undeniably pretty holo)

The women are all great, it's very difficult to choose one. Lu, in particular, is excellent. I'll choose to reject Lana, under duress.
This time KK didn't do very well, but he's been much better in other events. I'd want to keep him around, so I vote to reject Don.

Posted by Caliente on :

Geez, these are both so hard for me this time!

For the boys, I really liked Don's picture-- he sort of reminded me of Archangel from the X-Men (in a good way)-- but I felt like Karate Kid was sort of ripping off Hawkman (in a less good way). Still, I think Garth was the weakest of the three, so I've gotta vote him out.

As far as the girls go, they were all absolutely gorgeous. Seriously, Dean, you outdid yourself like whoa and even typing this now I'm still a little bit torn. But, if I must make a decision, I'm picking Ji because I feel as though she hasn't embraced the autumn auburn theme as much as the other two.

I'm not sure I want to vote against any of these girls, they are all awesome!

Don Allen and Val, on the other hand, I'm torn. I don't like either of 'em, and would vote both of 'em out before any of the girls, but in a toss, my hope to see something better from Val in the future leads me to vote out Don.

I guess, under duress, Ji Daggle goes. Too much background flash, obscuring her natural beauty. Lana and Lu manage to *own* their shots in a way that Ji doesn't quite manage. Sorry Ji, maybe next time.

Bye Don, bye Ji.

Posted by Insomniac Girl on :

I really like how Garth and Lu are heading straight for the viewer - very dynamic. Garth seems to have picked up quite some speed already, and he's looking so determined - wonder where he's going. Lu makes a perfectly friendly, curious and impish sea creature; she's totally irresistible.

Lana has this flirtatious, mischievous air as well. Love the pastelly reddish colours and the floaty hair.

Not too fond of Don and all that metal he's dragging around. I just can't unite my vision of a graceful flyer with someone wearing something weighing him down that heavily. And it's just such a cold, artificial contrast to the naturalness of the wings, as well. Val fares much better in that regard.

Ji looks glamorous, with graceful, supple lines. No, really, she's totally gorgeous, but since one female contestant has to go, I'll vote her out because she comes across as cooler and more remote than Lana and Lu, and I like that less than the other two's vivaciousness and playfulness.

Out:

Don and Ji (sniff.)

Reject Don Allen & Lana Lang.

Garth & Lu = !!!!!!! (It's interesting how the opinions vary.)

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

All three girls are looking particularly nice.

Lana rocks. She's totally got the whole "Lori Lemaris better not lay her hands on my man Clark" vibe going on!

Lu is just so sexy as well! I don't care for the multi-colored eyes, though.

Ji looks like a beautiful, but her personality doesn't come through as well as the others, so she's the one I'm going to be voting out.

For the boys:

I agree with Imra regarding Val. He looks very heroic.

Garth has a very similar pose to Lu's, and I really like it. The whole "coming straight at the camera" effect.

Don is just kind of boring. The hands at the side, little facial expression. I dunno. Just not doing anything for me.

So, JI and DON.

There are times when I feel guilty that I'm just Sketch Lad instead of Meticulous-Pencils-Clean-Inks-Polished-Colors Lad, but I'm hoping you guys can overlook some of my short-comings as an artist, and have fun with the competition.

I suppose having those weaknesses in the art makes it easier to decide who to cut, right?

Don't be talkin' nonsense, Sketchy. Sometimes the guys have a stronger showing than the gals -- just not this time. The Double-Xers walked all over the boys even sans feet.

Oh, and I like your coloring very much. [Color Kid]

There's enough of a margin to declare Don and Ji the rejects!

The finale is coming very soon!

Garth. Let's talk.

I've noted that while you've turned in some good holos, there's been stiffness and some instances where your arms are "off". (I don't think it's humanly possible to hold a space-champagne glass that way.) Another of your AFO Lad episodes (bizarre kitchen accident, perhaps)?

Then there's that other possibility. We've seen it before, and, more to the point, we've seen it here recently.

Are you or aren't you?

My standard post-rejection spillage...

This challenge evolved from the previous cancelled challenges. Mars, greens...men are from Mars, women are from Venus.... Venus has a watery reputation, right? Okay, the Men on Mars will have wings and the women on Venus will have fins!

I kept Lana traditional with the pearls and shells. I think Lash called it "vanilla."

After I drew Lu's face, the rest just happened naturally. Luck... divinity? Whatever works!

I quite liked Ji's pose and extra long sheer hair. I liked the bold background.

Karate Kid's sketches did evoke thoughts of Hawkman, so I just went with it!

Garth's face paint was a late addition to the composition. I thought it worked.

Don is definitely going for aerodynmics, and he ought to know... His shiny ensemble *must be* a very lightweight, 30th century material, right?

I love that there's so much discussion about each round, nowadays! Thanks for that.

I'm quite pleased with the pencils for the final round, so far...

a spoiler.....

There'll be a shake-up in judging!

She's right!

I especially liked the coloring touches on Lu, the glint of orange in her eye and the hints of purple and orange in her lipstick.

LU

VAL

Were those judges exposed to secondhand mist? Hate Face, Lana usually does have a mischievous expression, but here? Like Marte says, she looks like a doll. Vacant! Not good and not her.. Oh, and while that's a nice Garth (or is that "Garth"?) pic, it's Val who is so very clearly up to something.

PS: I want Hate Face to be in a model competition.

I'll go with Garth and Lu.

Garth and Lu to win.

And yes, the hints of purple and orange in Lu's face shot made it for me, great job. I didn't like KK this time, there is something wrong with one of his eyes. Lana is just 'not there'.

Yeah, Lu and Garth take this one for me, too. Lana looks so squeaky-clean and wholesome and Mayberry I could retch.

I'm loving Sarya's furry hat!

They're un-touchable! Garth and Lu win! This challenge had more obstacles along the way than any other, but it was great fun to work on! Thanks everyone, for being involved.

Whoops, missed the finale! I’d have actually voted for Lana, not that it would have done her any good. [Big Grin]

Still, her expression is not vacant or squeaky-clean, it’s, uh, gentle and innocent! She can’t be mischievous all around the clock, right? That’s her being caught alone, in a private moment, where her wholesome, apple-pie-ish good heart is really shining through. Or, um, something.

Digging around in this thread some more:

I always keep forgetting that this is THE FUTURE, which is above such trivial concerns as weight and gravity. My bad. [Embarrassed]

Personally I’d say I prefer pictures which have a fun, original and creative idea behind them to technically perfect, but sterile and boring ones. Since you always deliver on the idea front and rarely exhibit any artistic weaknesses (what weaknesses? Pah! Gotta get me a magnifying glass and hunt for them next time), I wager the audience sure is having fun. I am!

Anyway, congrats to the Autumn Auburns winners, they sure deserve their victory!

My heart goes out to the judges as well -

Mrs. Allon, whose strapping son certainly was robbed of victory by his non-appearance in the contest, her Highness the Emerald Empress, who’s suddenly found herself judging a type of competition not quite suited to her tastes, and most of all Mr. Hate Face, who always delivers such earnest, tactful commentary and never lets himself be derailed in his judging duties.
