House Rules
1) Each round will last about 48 hours. 2) I'll vote at or near the start of every round to minimize bias on my part. 3) While I don't encourage changing of votes, I won't disallow them either. I'll only tally votes at the end of each round (to make it easier on myself!). I'll post on this thread the minute I start tallying to alert everyone; votes that come in after that will be ignored. 4) In case of errors in the results, I'll post a correction immediately. If anyone's vote was affected by the error, that poster will be notified by PM immediately. If the poster cannot correct his error in time, he/she will get a makeup point next round - a +15 bonus. 5) Points will be given based on your ranking. The higher you rank a Titan on your list, the more points that Titan will get (e.g. Rank 1 gets 10 points, Rank 2 gets 9 points...) Point distributions will change per round. 6) Exception to the above will be the first 1-2 rounds of the game, which trim the list down considerably. Each vote will count as one point, and characters below a certain point threshold get eliminated.
This post opens the pre-game discussion - purpose is to review the list of Titans, and open the floor to suggestions for rule suggestions.
One comment I noted from before is to try and end the round at the same time (e.g. every 3:00PM), which is difficult but I'll try to do that. Another is to tweak the point distribution system so each higher rank gets an increasing jump in points).
Below is the list, for discussion. Everyone who was a member before Flashpoint gets lumped together under "Pre-Flashpoint". The current team get their own entries because they're radically changed post-Flashpoint. I also included the animated series, Kingdom Come and Titans of Tomorrow realities, plus Deathstroke's Titans (ugh).

Correct, Set, that's the basic idea. Though we'll probably pick more in the earlier rounds so we can whittle down the list faster (and so it doesn't get too repetitive, with voters just voting for the same 10 Titans every round)!

Query #1 - why are there both (Deathstroke's Titans) Arsenal and Osiris and (Pre-Flashpoint) Arsenal and Osiris when they are both essentially the same characters, and not even at that far apart in their histories?

Since the first round will eliminate a huge number of people, I'm erring on the side of removing the people in Query 1 (same characters), but keeping/adding as many named Team Titans as I can get (hey, who knows, someone might be a fan).
Vote for any number of Titans on the list, minimum of 1, maximum of 40.
No ranking needed for Round 1.
To proceed to Round 2, a Titan must have been voted for by 1/3 of the voters in this game.
So if 6 people play, 2 votes will be enough. If only 3 people play, then 1 vote will be enough.
Round ends early morning, US Pacific time, September 9, Sunday.

According to Wikipedia, Wonder Boy appeared in issues 19-22 and 24. I remember him appearing in the issue just after the Team Titans try and fail to return to the future where they came from.

Definitely some very interesting results after this round IB.

I'm not as sorry to lose that last one as you though. Kyle is an OK character but he's much more a JLA one than a Titans one - as he proved when he turned against the team in JLA/Titans!

As for the placements of the founding 5 - I knew Dick, Donna and Wally would make it through just fine without my votes. I wonder if others felt the same?

I was surprised that Bumblebee, Duela and Flamebird were so popular too - Bette got only one vote less than the first two! Pleased to see Kole and Tula doing quite well too, with only one vote less than Bette. Looks like love for the more obscure underdog Titans is strong!
I'm actually surprised Mal ranked so low. Given the popularity of the three gals above...! Maybe the girls are just more popular in general?
Somewhat pleased to see Solstice, CM3, Magenta, Bunker, Lagoon Boy, Pantha and Proxy, among others, squeak through. Can't say I'm truly elated, though - these characters are all (IMO) interesting and pleasant, but I don't "know" them well enough to really jump for joy.
Not too surprised that Jesse (or Kyle) didn't make it, since they're more associated with other teams. Sad for Kyle, since I see his tenure in the Titans as a nice story about him growing up, but not surprised.
Not too surprised about Batgirl or Damian or Jason Todd either, since they weren't really associated with the Titans (and Damian has been pretty snotty before!).
I knew the Founding 5 + the Perez/Wolfman biggies (Kory, Raven, Vic, Gar) would make it through no problem. It'll be interesting to see how they rank in the end, though!

I was disappointed that all of the main 5 from the animated series didn't make it in. here's hoping animated Starfire and Raven go far!
Also, I'm a big fan of the Stephanie Brown Batgirl series, so I'm hoping Wendy/Proxy goes far!

I'm surprised at how male-heavy my lists turned out to be. I usually end up lopsided in the other direction.
Similarly, I've put zero thought into how this team would balance, and have Superboy, Osiris, Damage, Miss Martian, Bombshell and Power Boy (who, more or less, are very similar powerhouses) alongside scrappier non-powered (or 'lightly powered') characters like Nightwing, Arsenal, Joker's Daughter, Ravager, Son of Vulcan and Golden Eagle.
I artificially limited myself to picking only one version of a character, but, in retrospect, I kinda wish I'd voted for both Animated Kory *and* Pre-Flashpoint Kory. I love them both!

Knowing that there's only going to be one winner at the end of all this (which, by the way, even now, I have a feeling I know who that winner is going to be) I'm not paying attention to the "team balance" in my votes at all.
I'm really surprised that there are voters here voting for characters that they've never actually read in a comic before. You guys must be supremely disinterested in a lot of the Titans that you have actually read! haha

I was super-disappointed when Geoff Johns offed him in Infinite Crisis but since he was his creator, I guess that was his right.
I find it quite disrespectuful when writers kill off other writers' characters and since Geoff Johns and James Robinson are such serial committers of that crime, I find myself really wishing someone would kill off their pet characters, Stargirl and Starman (much as I like them), just so that they can learn what it feels like!

I liked Bushido too, I only read two issues with him in it, one where he died but ...I think a look and interesting back story might be more than other characters have going for them!!! I thought he was a bit angry ... which I liked.

I also did actually liked the similarity with katana's origin ... (if not the actual origin ... too many Asian characters have this *my power is my ancestors* b.s. why? I don't know how they got singled out as having special ancestors? haha) but i thought it created a great link between an older character and him as a second generation version ... which is what the titans are.

I usually find myself voting for the underexposed, more minor characters in games like this. Besides the Legion games of course.
I think it's because the more popular characters (e.g. JLA Big 7, Titans Founding 5 + Wolfman/Perez kids) tend to go under the pens of diff. writers, and some give good characterization, some give bad, it kinda tends to even out for me. And even though I like a lot of them, there are only a few that I like so well that I'd throw lots of votes their way since I know they'll likely end up sticking around anyway
A good example is Beast Boy, who was a big fave around the Titans LA era up to the latest pre-Flashpoint series. But boy, I found him annoying at various points of the Wolfman/Perez run!
Re Bushido, I remember reading his bio on Titans Tower a while back and found it pretty cool that he also appeared in the toon. I liked the part of his backstory about being "forced" to carry on the family tradition -something a lot of young Asians can relate to. His joining Titans LA was nice, and I liked that team's lineup - both individually (I voted for all of them save CM3 in Round 1, and only left CM3 off because I was sure he'd make it) and as a group (looked like they'd have interesting dynamics).
Re the ancestor thing, it's pretty common in a lot of Asian cultures. Ancestors are revered because we wouldn't be around without them And we often pray to them for guidance and good luck. Not too far away from drawing strength and powers from our ancestors.
One example is August, the hungry ghost month. Chinese believe that the ghosts of ancestors and other supernatural spirits are released from hell, so we offer food to appease them. My favorite is when we burn paper "money" (not the real currency!!!) so our ancestors can use them in the afterlife.

Hi all,
I read on wikipedia that Traci 13 is a Titans reservist. Can anyone confirm?
If yes, I'll add her to the eliminated Titans list when we vote on wild cards later on. Adding her to the list now would be a tad unfair given that we're already in the ranking stage.

This round will end in 2 days - the morning of Friday, PST (that's Friday evening my time).
1) Each round will last about 48 to 72 hours, and will end early morning PST. 2) I'll vote at or near the start of every round to eliminate bias on my part. 3) While I don't encourage changing of votes, I won't disallow them either. I'll post on this thread the minute I start tallying to alert everyone; votes/changes that come in after that will be ignored. 4) In case of errors in the results, I'll post a correction immediately. If anyone's vote was affected by the error, and that poster wasn't able to correct the error in time, he or she will get a makeup vote next round - +15 points to give a Legionnaire of their choosing. 5. Kara Zor-El was a Titan from v3 issues 50-55. Her membership was pretty much just during the storyline where they fought the Titans from Tomorrow. Dunno if it's editorial meddling, but given how short a time she spent I'd say it's a safe bet Posted by Lard Lad on :

Ooooh! I was thinking of the Silver Age version of that character. Never considered the one who directly preceded Flashpoint for about a decade, even though I enjoyed the run by Gates/Igle on her own book. Odd that no one ever thought to put Silver Age Kara on the team. Probably for the best in hindsight given what havoc Crisis wrought on the Titans with the Donna Troy revisions! Interesting point, though, as the Superman family was pretty much the only Earth-1 "family" not represented in the Titans. If Kara had been there, they'd probably have caught Deathstroke many times over... But yeah, that would have been awfully confusing!

Thanks to Miss Martian and Zachary Zatara and Kyle Rayner kinda/sorta hanging out with the Titans once upon a time, one of the few traditional League members *not* to have a Titans legacy is the Black Canary.

Indeed, I went and shuffled some names around, after seeing how the posters above me had voted, to give some protection to them what needed it, and steal way from them what didn't.
I'm at war with myself over characters that 'it doesn't feel like the Titans without' like Donna and Dick and Wally, and 'characters that were taken away too soon / not given a fair shake' like Kole and Duela and Golden Eagle.
Donna and Wally (and Garth) kind of end up in both categories, thanks to the new DCU getting rid of them, now that I think of about it...

My main difficulty is strategic voting - especially since I always go first. Sometimes I'm afraid to rank a beloved character lower because everyone else might think that Titan is safe too. Similar to how I voted for Kinetix in Legion Idol, I think Kole will always be at the top of my list no matter how safe she might seem.

That's right, Round 4 is our chance to right wrongs and bring back some favorites.
This round will end Sunday early morning PST (late evening, my time).
Read carefully, please!
Each player gets 150 points to distribute however they please.
To use Legionnaires as an example:
Voter 1 - 150 points to Gates
Voter 2 - 100 points to Kinetix, 50 points to Dawnstar
Voter 3 - 30 points to Monstress, 30 points to Wildfire, 30 points to Bouncing Boy, 30 points to Brainiac 5, 30 points to Nightwind
and so on, as long as:
a) You only vote for characters on the list below b) Your total points add up to 150
Top 4 vote-getters come back to the list, joining our current 20 to make a Top 24.
In case of ties, the Titan who had the most accumulated votes when he/she was eliminated will return to the game.
House Rules
1) Each round will last about 48 to 72 hours, and will end early morning PST. 2) I'll vote at or near the start of every round to eliminate bias on my part. 3) While I don't encourage changing of votes, I won't disallow them either. I'll post on this thread the minute I start tallying to alert everyone; votes/changes that come in after that will be ignored. 4) In case of errors in the results, I'll post a correction immediately. If anyone's vote was affected by the error, and that poster wasn't able to correct the error in time, he or she will get a makeup vote next round - +15 points to give a character of their choosing. 5. 25 (Teen Titans Animated) Cyborg - a great character, and much less baggage than the comics version of Cyborg!
25 (Pre-Flashpoint) Miss Martian - a fun character who embodies heroism, plus I think she'll do well given her points in previous rounds
75 (Pre-Flashpoint) Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes) - became a big fan after reading his series and Generation Lost. Kid has what it takes!
25 {Titans Tomorrow) Terra III (Atlee) - agree with what Peebz said, another "cute can be a great hero" type character, and powerful to boot! And I did regret not voting for her earlier.

Thanks to Miss Martian and Zachary Zatara and Kyle Rayner kinda/sorta hanging out with the Titans once upon a time, one of the few traditional League members *not* to have a Titans legacy is the Black Canary.

I should have amended that to say, "among the Pre-Crisis Earth-1 families" at the time. In any case, with Kon-el, Matrix and Kara Zor-El all showing up, the Superman family is well-represented.
Even Atom had a rep via Molecule, and Plastic Man's son Offspring joined up briefly.
I suppose the Birds of Prey's Misfit showing up in the Titans Tomorrow arcs makes her the representative of that entire team too, including Black Canary!

Haha Thanks PB! I think my obsession with Wonder Boy has died down a bit now that I've seen what he looks like though. I was picturing some cute, silly, Golden-Age style character... and instead he looks like a totally 90s creation with a sort of reverse color-schemed Booster Gold-type costume going on.
I might love him again once I re-read his appearances for my Who's Who of him though.

Wow, voting was close for the top 6 at least!
And so we welcome four Titans back to the fold, one of whom didn't even make it past round 1 previously.
Quite a few surprises... the comics versions of Starfire and Cyborg didn't even get a point, while fan favorite Duela Dent and "big name" Superboy missed out on coming back.
Just goes to show that in this type of game, a few voters giving big points can make more of a difference than if every voter gives a few points each.
These four Titans return to the list, although votes in this round won't count towards their accumulated points.

Miss Martian had 279 accumulated points, while Golden Eagle had 186. Miss Martian would have returned to the list, leaving us with a 50-50 split between male and female Titans.
I would have preferred Duela over Golden Eagle too... I think many of us assumed other people would vote for Duela. Ah, well.

Man, this one was tough. It was fairly easy to choose my top 12 (though torn between the two versions of Gar), but ranking them was another thing entirely.

Sorry I didn't get back in time to see your message IB. Don't know how I messed that up.
My intent was to give Jaime half my votes, Kon was supposed to half - 5 and Miss Martian would have gotten the other 5 to break the tie with Duela, though I like both of them.
Next time maybe we can use points to add or subtract points from a contestant. That would make it very interesting! LOL

Sorry, Vee, no +50 or +15 points for you this round The "bonus" points only apply if I make a mistake in tallying. At least both Jaime and Miss Martian got through, so your 100 points were hardly wasted.
We had a "Hurt and Heal" game for the Legion last year, which was based on dedman's older game here.
Not to mention the order of elimination - Ultra Boy, Brainiac 5, Invisible Kid (Lyle), Mon-El, Star Boy, Saturn Girl and Superboy were among the first 10 to go home!

Wow. We lose Bunker, animated starfire and animated Beast Boy, leaving animated Raven as the only non Pre-Flashpoint Titan.
Mal Duncan and Dawn Granger leave us after fighting valiantly these past few rounds; both have had at least one narrow escape before.
Wendy had a good showing too, considering her relatively short tenure and her history as part of the Super Friends cartoon.
Beast Boy and Raven join the other Wolfman-Perez originals Cyborg, Starfire, Jericho and Terra in the Hall of Heroes. I believe Kole is the only Wolfman-Perez original still remaining (besides Animated Raven). I certainly thought more of them would make it farther! Have they become overexposed?
And in a sharp contrast, the original five are all still here - as are several Silver Age Titans.

I suspect that they've simply been changed too radically over the years. Raven's been three different characters, Cyborg has been a cyborg, an alien robot and now an Apokaliptikan sleeper agent, Jericho has gone back and forth between good-guy and crazy bad-guy more than Quicksilver, etc.
On the other hand, Roy and Donna have had their share of crazyness, and they are still hanging tough!
Sad to see Animated Starfire cut this round. She was a breath of fresh air. Animated Raven's still holding on for dear life, 'though, and has the distinction of being the last survivor of all the non-Pre-Flashpoint continuities, beating out all other Animated characters, all of the Team Titans (yeah, okay, big whoop), Deathstroke's Titans, the Kingdom Come crew and the DCnU Titans (of which, only Bunker had made it this far)!

It is neat that the list isn't a total nostalgia-fest, 'though. Miss Martian, Captain Marvel Jr. and Blue Beetle are hardly the first characters one thinks of when one thinks 'Teen Titans,' and yet there they are, hanging with Dick and Donna and Wally and Roy.
And then there are the characters that remain mysteries to me. Proxy? I have no idea. And Flamebird? Wow, reading her Wiki entry, I had no idea how far she'd risen and fallen over the years, just sort of vaguely remembering her as the rich kid who had a crush on Robin and kept showing up and trying to catch his eye. I like her last costume (before she hooked up with Batwoman). Very distinctive (and it would have complemented the Nightwing costume nicely, which I suspect was the point).

Wendy (Proxy) was a teen genius who was a kind of Ms. Fixit to the Titans, and ended up attacked and wheelchair-bound. Wow, huh?
Bumblebee's original Titans membership spanned, what, 5 issues at the most? And Kole's entire appearances spanned less than a year before she died, too!
Sad to see Animated Starfire go too. She and Raven were my faves on the Titans toon. Glad to see Raven's still here, she was quite adorable. I really liked both of them over their comics versions.

If it makes you feel better, Lardy, I was torn between the 2 versions of Gar... and ended up losing both of them
I'm also pretty bummed at Bunker's elimination. First openly-gay Titan (unless you count Hero Cruz)
I think the tough part of this game is balancing our desire to "save" as many faves as possible, with the reality that there'll only be one winner. It's highly possible that some of us will find we've been supporting lower-ranked favorites, who may end up beating our top favorites for slots in future rounds.

Wow! I snuck a peek at the list while working (doing overtime now) and it looks like nearly all of us players this round will lose half our lists!
Although at this point, almost any eliminations will be surprising - but preliminary figures show a lot of early fan favorites might go home tonight.

Round 7 Begins!
Luckily for most of us, now's the chance to soften the blow! Just like in Legion Idol, we're going to get a chance to bring some Titans back.
All Titans we've lost since we formed our Top 24 get a second chance at come back!
For each of the 14 wild card contenders, simply vote YES or NO. Any Titan who has 75% of players vote YES makes it back next round.
I considered setting a cap, but ultimately decided not to do so (like what happened in Legionnaire Idol). If too many Titans come back, we'll just eliminate more next round.
A note of caution - a character you return to the list may very well beat out another of your favorites next round!

I think I know which of your Final 3 you feel will win. Two of the Titans remaining on your list from last round have been placing high in previous rounds and have accumulated quite a lot of votes!

This was always part of the plan I'll have one of these rounds every Idol game, the only question is the timing - having it close enough to the finale to make players happy, but far enough away not to totally throw the results out of whack.
By the way, this will be the LAST "wild card" round in the game, so everyone better choose carefully - a character you vote back in now might very well usurp the spot of another favorite later on!

I thought I'd save talking about my perplexity at that character's popularity until after the game was over.
But what's this about accumulated votes? Is that what determines the overall winner, not just a final vote-off? I haven't really been throwing many votes toward 1 of my 3 thinking they were pretty safe up until now.

There's nobody left on the "safe" list that I do not like, though there are some I wouldn't be able to accept winning over my own favorites. But there are some on the list of 14 hopefuls whom I really wouldn't want to see return!
Re accumulated votes, oh no. They're only gonna be used to break ties if/when they happen. But I've found accumulated votes can be a somewhat decent indicator of how well a character will do in an Idol type game - then again, the last round will come down to a simple majority. But all rounds before that take into out not only how many voters like a character, but also the degree of popularity - hence the ranking Posted by Power Boy on :

Sorry guys, by my count there is only one Titan left that stands a decent chance of making it. Of the others, 7 of them couldn't make it in at this point even if everyone left casts a vote for them. Besides the one I mentioned above, there are 4 others with a very slim chance of making it through and all four of them would need all 3 remaining players to cast votes for them. Looking back to their prior votes, the two other voters have only cast concurrent votes for 1 of the 4 remaining with a slim chance.
Now, I could slam the door in her face (did I say "her"? Oops!) and say "no further for you" That would be the end of the line for her. It would mean only 1 Titan out of this entire group could still move forward, assuming one of the other two guys votes for him to advance along with me.
But, since they both seem to be partial for her, I'm going to cast a vote for her to keep her slim chance alive and leave it up to her last two fans to vote her in if they want.

I actually miscounted, and Vee was correct.
In sum, there are only 2 Titans out of the 14 who have a chance of making it through this round.
Assuming only the 8 of us will vote this round, one Titan needs one Yes, while another needs two Yes votes to make it through.

Of course, it may have had something to do with the game's different format too, since Roy was one of the Top 3 in Round 1.

As Vee so accurately counted, only one Titan makes it through the gauntlet this round.

I honestly thought we'd have more returning Titans this round. I guess by now most of us are really rooting for our top faves - or maybe our favorite Titans are just more disparate than I thought. Then again, there's also the whole "strength of the liking" for each character thingie.

Re: the fact that only one character came back. I was actually surprised that we even got that many back. Since there are only 8 of us regularly playing this game, all it took to kill a character's chances was for 3 of us to say NO. And it's probably safe to say that each one of those characters was not a super-fave of at least 3 of us.

I guess given how many of us lost major portions of our lists these past two rounds, we'd be chomping at the bit to get some back. But you're right, given the late stage of the game we're probably sticking to just our faves.
Looking back, the votes for the Wild Card round almost exactly mirroed the votes for the two rounds before that, so it shouldn't have been such a big surprise for me.

I will vote for (Pre-Flashpoint) Flamebird.
I love Kole, I may even love her more than Flamebird but ... The first Batgirl has gotten the short end of the stick for decades. Most recently, as the failure side kick of the trendy Batwoman. She was just trashed as a feature of Batwoman's plot, not even her own.
I will be happy whoever wins, those three are all great!
I find it funny, yet again, that two of the top 3 are not even in continuity in the current DC. This reflects games on this board and articles in the news that some of the most popular characters to fans aren't necessarily published by DC.

Gosh. I never thought I would still have two of my favorites left in the final round.
I knew from the first round that Kole would be here at the end (and would/will probably win) but well done to Flamebird for making it here too. (And Wally, though his inclusion is much less of a surprise. I knew one of Dick, Donna or Wally would be here too. Just wasn't sure which.)
But who to give my vote to now? The shooting star who was taken from us far too soon? Or the quiet fighter who's been hanging on for around fifty years and has only recently started achieving the recognition she deserves?
I'd be happy with either one winning but since Kole has felt like the fait accompli for so long, I'll vote for Flamebird to keep things interesting.

Sorry IB, Comic book Raven needs to be like her original self. They tried making her into the cartoon Raven in a mini-series they did a couple of years back.

Can't say I'm that familiar with current Raven, Quis. Based on Wolfman-Perez Raven up to evil Raven, my reaction is mostly based on what they did with evil Raven.
I do admit though that the original Raven was very likable - she was tortured but very compassionate, and THAT characterization I liked a lot.

Or not. I greatly dislike that version of the character so seeing her last for so long like that was a source of great frustration for me.
I wouldn't call myself the biggest fan of the comics version of Raven either (though I do like her) but I think the extensive character work she received made her a MUCH stronger and more interesting character than the animated one - which to me just seemed like the writers had created a Mary Sue for every bookish emo/goth outsider who wished they could be as droll and aloof and quick/dry-witted as she was. A pandering manipulation of a character-type that pops up so much on TV these days that IMO any one of a number of similar characters could have stepped into animated Raven's costume with very little noticeable difference to the show.

I have to say that yours and Quis' opinions have swayed me somewhat. Any good recommendations for particular issues that show Raven's good, gradual character development? I followed her story arc in the original Wolfman-Perez run but kind of got lost after the Titans fought Trigon.
Also, any issues to avoid in particular, like the ones where she became a stripper-vampire who planted Trigon seeds in many beloved chaarcters? Posted by lowercase mllash on :

On the Raven tangent, I'd be fine with either the fun Animated Raven personality or the weight-of-the-world very serious classic Raven personality, but for powers, I hugely prefer Animated Raven.
The flight and the darkforce stuff was much more active than classic Raven's passive 'team transport / healer with poor control of her powers' role.

The results for this were much closer than the Legion Idol results, but after a long hard game, we have...
Flamebird and Flash tie with 3 votes each! Using accumulated votes to break the tie -
Flamebird racked up 759 before this, while Wally got 813, so...
Flamebird comes in a well-deserved third, seeing as how she returned to the list and outlasted 8 other Titans to make the finals!
Flash / Kid Flash, the first Titan to "graduate" and a long-serving member of the team, comes in 2nd!

KOLE, despite having had such a short tenure, managed to touch many of our hearts since it was both far too short and way too good!

As far as Raven goes, I hold out for the Wolfman/Perez characterization. (the same can be said for Jericho) Everything after seems to just take the character away fromwhat is core to the character. Mind you, I like the animated Raven, but only in the animated series.

Thanks, Quis. I edited the list to note that the 2nd listing of Flamebird (plus Miss Martian, Blue Beetle, Golden Eagle and animated Beast Boy) is when they were FIRST eliminated.
I have to agree that Wolfman-Perez remains the best, though there are some works from them that chip away at said "good" characterization. For example, the recently-released "Games" shows Jericho with about 8 simultaneous girlfriends, and it is hinted that both Jericho and each of the girls consider these romantic rather than platonic relationships. My issue isn't that Jericho has romantic relationships with women, it's that he would knowingly have 8 simultaneous ones.

JLA Idol coming up within the next couple weeks

Besides JLA, which other teams would you like to see?
I'm thinking JSA after JLA, but that's it for DC teams... as for Marvel teams, only X-Men and Avengers, IF ever. But since I'm not a big Marvel fan I'm not really that excited on doing any games for Marvel teams.

Even though, none of my faves in Titans Idol made it all the way, I had a lotta fun! I've never even read a Kole story other than her quick death in Crisis, but I'm a sucker for short-lived heroes. When she made it so far, I was happy to support her!
I sure hope to read Kole's appearances eventually, along with most of the Wolfman/Perez run that I've never had the privelege to experience thus far.....

The thing with Kole is that she's popular *despite* herself. She didn't get a lot of characterization, and her origin story was crazier than Donna Troy's, in that, for all that Donna had a convoluted mess of contradictory origins, Kole's origin story was just bizarre, with a dash of contrived, and, IMO, best forgotten.
Her powers had a great visual, and she came across as a really nice person, with a hint of an edge that we never got to see explored.
I'd love her for her powers alone, although the only other lady 'crystal-spinner' I know of in comics, Krystalin, of the X-Men 2099, was a vastly more interesting character (who, granted, had entire issues devoted to fleshing out her characterization and backstory, was a more 'first-tier' character in her own team's book, and had a longer run as a character, IIRC).

I think Kole's tragically short tenure combined with how she was written in Crisis to make her so well-loved.
I read both her Crisis appearances and her main Titans book appearances, and I have to say that if I'd only read her in Titans I wouldn't have cared about her at all. There was her awful origin as mentioned, and she also spent much of that time weeping and being generally overwhelmed.
On the other hand, in Crisis she was confident, sure of herself, very pleasant, optimistic and acted like a pro - I was surprised to find out she wasn't one of the Titans mainstays, she acted so competent!

yeah, her whole Thia and the Old Titans storyline and origin pretty much was like an acid trip (and drawn beautifully as an acid trip) but ... her kicking butt in the Crisis and after her origin ... sold me on her and I thought it was a shame to lose her so quickly. Was this a misjudgement on the writer's part or ... did it make us love her even more? Probably a bit of both.
Also, I love the take on her powers, she's like the age old ice generating character but ... with a fresh twist. Also actually being able to turn people into crystal ... was great! and vicious!

The Wolfman-Perez run had quite a few highlights that I'm sure you'd love, Lardy! Re Kole, as mentioned above you didn't really miss much as IMO her best moments were in Crisis

and she had great control over her powers, able to make many useful shapes!
Marv Wolfman on Kole [from The Titans Companion, 2005]
TTC: This was the period when Kole was introduced. Can you explain what the origin behind that character was?
MW: Well, simply put, in Crisis the call went out for characters who we’d kill or not kill or do damage to. [laughs] I’m saying this a very cruel fashion right now, and it wasn’t done that way, hopefully, back then. Everyone was required to give us somebody in some fashion, and quite frankly, I created Kole specifically for that purpose. It was to die in Crisis.
TTC: Once Jose designed her and gave her life, did you regret having to do that to her?
MW: Of course. In fact, that’s the best type of character to kill, because she was no longer a wretcher. She was no longer just fodder for the cannon. She was somebody who the readers really got to care for, and therefore it became very hard to kill her, but it meant that her death meant something.
TTC: Kole wasn’t the only Titan to die in Crisis: Dove and Aquagirl were also killed during that series. If you had wanted to, could you have said, “I’ve already filled my quota of dead Titans. I’m going to spare Kole?”
MW: My view of that was because the other writers were being asked to kill off characters, some for whom they may have been created, I had to show that I was willing to go further and definitely kill off a character that I created. Again, a lot of that’s political. I wish that didn’t have to happen, because I really liked the character, but I had to find some way to say, “You’re not the only ones being affected.”

Man, I really wish Marv had killed off that whiny Azrael instead! No offense to fans ofthe character, but he really annoyed me - and winged flight adds nothing new, whereas Kole's powers were much more unique.
Of course, Kole's death hit harder but... I would much rather have had her around!

Unlike ... Professor X's recent meaningless death ... = bad writing.
Also, Lardy, The early Wolfman Perez stories were excellent. just exquisite ... and actually I think comics in general owes a lot to them.
When Raven did finally go evil, they showed a slide show of how her look had changed over time ... they drew her subtly different and wrote her subtely different over the course of years! (ok maybe 2)
I can only speculate but Uncanny X-Men and The Teen Titans were the top books for so long, It only makes sense that there might have been some sort of creative one upmanship that helped make great stories.

I was just about to say the exact same thing!
I first 'met' Kole in Crisis and I immediately thought "Who is this fun, awesome Titan that I've never heard of before with this interesting power and fresh, unique look?"
And then I read her appearances in the main book and was like "Ugh! Cool Titan but talk about being saddled with a crappy introduction story, an even crappier origin story (I HATE the bug-parents!) and the world's most boring 'boyfriend' (pre man-slut Jericho... hey - maybe it was Kole's death that turned him into that! haha). And then she was killed off! So unfair!
I respect Marv Wolfman's reasons for doing so though. Since he was killing off so many other writer's characters it was only fair that he kill off one of his own too.

I started to detest Jericho because of his treatment of Kole ... he was supposed to be such a charmer because he was sensitive ... and played guitar and was injured ... (we get it) ... and then by dissing Kole ... he changed into a sleezy creep who had commitment issues. Overcompensation because his power was weak and redundant.
He didn't know a catch when it hit him over the head with a crystal hammer.
(I block out the bug parents thing ... she is an orphan in my mind, kidnapped by Thia ... hell I'd prefer if she was just a random lower level Titan or fairy or something ... than a kidnapped mutant who looks suspiciously like a Titan of myth and/or fairy)

You could do Defenders one from Marvel also. Though at this point I don't know what distinguishes one team from another over there. But DEF certainly started out as a very unique and interesting team, very different from Avengers and XMen

A far as Kole...since I dropped into the middle of the conversation. Seeing Marv's explanation for her origin helps explain some of the crazy intro and background. If you're going to kill her anyway, why waste a good origin tale. I think people liked her in spite of the writing team, because she came across like the girl next door type.

I started drawing up the list for Justice League, and they sure have a lot of splinter teams... X-Men will be much worse, since we have X-Factor, X-Force, the X-Men students... Defenders would be nice, though probably short I think.
In any case, Justice League next then we'll see from there
Guess Marv might have made Kole's origin outlandish at that...
Switching to another of our winners, I'm really glad Flamebird was revived and used more. Always nice reading about underdog heroes!

Same here. Instead of the 'trinity' of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, my votes would be more focused on characters like Hawkwoman, Black Canary, Vixen and Booster Gold.
The League has had a ton of characters come and go, in short-lived teams or retcon appearances, Moon Maiden and Manitou Raven and Coldcast and Major Disaster and Silver Sorceress and Aztek.

I too won't be throwing that many votes to the Trinity or even to the Big Seven, except for J'Onn and Diana. For the rest of the Satellite Era/Watchtower, probably will give points to Elongated Man, Black Canary Firestorm and Zatanna. A lot of JLI era Leaguers will get plenty of votes from me though - Dr. Light, Fire, Ice, Beetle, Booster, Metamorpho, Power Girl...
One problem I'm having with making a list, is how to treat all these versions. For the comics, I've decided to just have one set for Pre-Flashpoint and one for Post-Flashpoint. But how do I treat the ones who've been retconned massively?
Katar Hol and Carter Hall will get separate entries, as will Shayera and Shiera. But I don't think I'll treat Pre-Crisis Diana and Post-Crisis Diana differently; same for Bruce and Clark.
My other major problem is how to treat the various animated universes. Should I make a completely different list for the Super Friends, or only include Super Friends who have no counterparts in the Justice League Unlimited universe? How about the Young Justice version? Or the Brave and the Bold version? Do I treat each separately, or can I safely merge them all?
Whew! Questions, questions...
