When I try to get into the "Welcome Jason Hall Lad" thread to read it, I get the following error:
Hack attempt logged or corrupt/altered member file found with extra fields. ('00000404')
Refreshing doesn't help, and I tried 3 or 4 times, but got the same message each time. It's the only thread I've gotten it on so far.

Fixed.
Unfortunately, some of the member files are corrupted from a previous hack. I've fixed all the ones I've found so far, but I'm sure more are out there.

Add Hack attempt logged or corrupt/altered member file found with extra fields. ('00000361') too. And how come the mods for each forum don't display any more - I checked, and I still have Mod Powers™ in the PCM (come on... "Vote-O-Matic"?!) and Comic forums, but the mods' usernames don't show in any forums (fora? ) any more. Bad Change

Gary, don't kill yourself! You did a bang-up job, and I'm sure you'll get to everything when you get the opportunity. If it's not a fatal error, let it wait. You've got a life, too!

Since when? Gary, if there is anything I can do to help, just holler. If you can't reach me at my home e-mail or via PM just drop me a note at work: scott.sharritt@marriott.com.

Now that everything's new, the board registers a hack attempt if even a hint of that member's profile appears. I started going through the list looking for signs of it but gave up after opening several files not affected. I then went around the board looking for error messages and apparently haven't caught them all.

Okay I have to ask this as I'm not sure if its my increasingly poor eyesight or something with the new background but are there evenly spaced blue splotches amidst the stars? They are kinda dark so they don't stand out but its enough to make me think I'm seeing spots before my eyes.

The main difficulty so far that I've had is that everything is displaying, scrolling, accepting keystrokes at one-third of the earlier speed. At least in Netscape 7.02, and presumably in Mozilla.
It's not occurring in Internet Explorer 5.5, and that makes me think this version of UBB is using IE-only features, caching, or handles for hack opportunities.
If I can't use my normal browser, I'll have to cut back on visiting for a while. (Don't all of you cheer at once!)

I'm also getting an odd effect, using IE 6.0.2, when I toggle between screens. When I toggle back to LW it looks like a ghost running across the screen before the screen shows correctly.
And I'm experiencing slow response like Grey but that could very well be my work server. I'll have to test more from home, should I get to go home today.

That's the background image Scott - I remember I had a similar thing once when I had a subtle background on a page on my school's intranet. To fix it, you'll need to change that.

Another corrupt profile error: Hack attempt logged or corrupt/altered member file found with extra fields. ('00000066') [Funnily enough, I've just noticed that Pulsar (member 66) has just logged in, and it was the screen just after the "thanks for logging in" prompt that errored. Coincidence or related?] Originally posted by Lightning Lad: Ah. So its a bunch of stars running together instead of a ghost. I guess that's a bit better. LOL - everything non-transparent on the bg shows as white for a second, and it runs quickly but sequentially through all the repeats before anything else displays And I'm finding LW's speed fine from uni

I caught the corruption for Pulsar (I, too, think these errors occur when the member first tries to log back in) and fixed it. I'll try to keep an eye out for others as they occur.

Okay, what idiot turned off the target=_blank functionality in the upgrade? I hate links like those for the creators in Visionaries of Tomorrow that take you away from the site. They should open in a separate window. But when I try to add the target code it reverts the entire URL code to show on the page instead of the link.

An old "favourite" error message is still around post-upgrade too: Sorry, UBB has encountered an unexpected, fatal error. This error is extremely abnormal. Please contact the board administration. The error text is: ...
Can't open 'CachePath/ubb_files/forums/Forum4/000401-78.cgi'. The exact error returned by the operating system is: Stale NFS file handle
» Please use your browser's back button to return.

Although I'm sorry for any difficulties anyone may be having using this message board, I don't believe reverting to 6.5 is a viable course of action. I haven't experienced any problems using the three browsers that I own to warrant such an action. If you want to affect change on future updates of the UBB.classic, I suggest letting your voice be heard here .

I don't think anybody is calling for reverting to the earlier version, from what I can see ... though being on the trailing edge of such things rarely ends up being a bad idea.
We certainly do appreciate all of your efforts, Gary. It's far from a minimal amount of effort to keep track of it all. I do have to wonder, though, whether what you last said meant that you won't be investigating anything further from what we've reported so far.
I, for one, hope you can find out what may be so severely eroding performance with Netscape/Mozilla. My needing five minutes to type in a posting of this length -- or about twice what it took for me to open another text editor, type, cut, and paste -- shouldn't be a part of the experience.

That link above will take you to the same place that I'll be looking for answers. I'll also be looking in UBBDev for possible remedies. But I'm not sure there's much I can do to fix it without recoding Netscape/Mozilla. It may be just like the Alt tag - beyond my control.

I hope you didn't take my rant about the lack of full HTML control badly Gary. I know what a beast this place is to rebuild and appreciate all the hard work you've been doing. My beef is with the UBB idiot who didn't bother to put all HTML codes into the program. And such a simplistic piece too.

Ditto Scott immediately above. Allowing only the UBB Code for users is one thing -- it makes matters easier by limiting the effect of changes in individual posts. But not allowing such HTML for Webmasters' control? That makes no sense.
As I just noted on Bevis's thread, yes, the flashing background (which didn't flash for me) appears to have been the culprit, as speeds are now back to past-normal. Worth a try, but thanks for changing it back.

I think he refers to the UBB links, which previously opened in a new window but now don't.

No, Grey is right. I was referring to the fact that before when Gary or I used HTML in the Control Panel to add things like the links to the creator sites, we could use full HTML, including the call to open a link in a different window. Now when trying to use that same basic code it only screws it all up instead showing the code rather than just the link.
What gets me is it specifically says in the CP that HTML is enabled. If it is enabled then why can't I put in a very basic piece of code?

And problem solved. For now. It appears that everytime you save in the CP where you are allowed to use HTML it reverts to UBB code which strips out the target=_blank. Apparantly there is no corresponding UBB code. So as long as we don't re-edit that forum's settings everything will be okay. Otherwised we have to redo the HTML code everytime.

Not that I even pretend to understand what is going on here with the technical talk, but I got this message when I tried to open the second page of the Olivier Coipel wrap around cover thread in Dr. Gym'll's Cultural Remedies...
"Hack attempt logged or corrupt/altered member file found with extra fields. ('00000362')"
Just FYI.

OKay, I double-posted on the Secret HQ thread in the Legion forum, and first when I tried to delete one of the posts, I was told that "Only administrators or moderators may perform this action". Then, when I tried the other post, I got this:
Hack attempt logged. You may not leave out the reply number while editing.
What's going on?

Okay, weird - it IS gone, after telling me that it wasn't going to.
Maybe that was why I got the "no reply number" on the second post (I was trying to edit a post that wasn't there), but it doesn't explain why it apparently refused me yet didn't.

I'll need to look at solutions.

Well, I just checked and the Smilie Mod I used is ported to 6.6 (which didn't have the quick reply), several of us have asked that it get ported to 6.7. I may try to work on this myself once I finish getting us updated to the old mods. And BTW, I had to figure out a bug with the calendar hack last night and posted the solution to UBBDev!

I meant, it blanks out the smilie box for the quick reply. And yes of course there's a smilie box with the smilie mod, but it's coded for the page that it's attached to (i.e. the reply page or the new page) and not to the quick reply on the forum pages.

I worked with this all before when trying to get the smilie box to work with the quick reply in 6.5. If no programmer gets to it before I'm ready, I'll try to work it out myself.

Gary, I don't know if this is really a error or not. My profile is set to show all topics but no matter what forum I'm in, the setting stays at 60 days. Is there another default somewhere, maybe in the cp?

That setting is now forum specific. Is this a problem with all the forums or just one?
I've just set the Encyclopedia to "Show all topics" and to be in Alphabetical order rather than by date.

Not an "error," but you may want to restore the smaller Legion World logo for the Website URL boxes and (in Netscape/Mozilla) browser window tabs.
That generic UBB lightbulb reminds me of {urghhh} Rob's board ...

It is there. It never went away. You need to grab the icon showing (lightbulb, IE, Netscape, etc) and drag it towards the right in the address bar. The LW logo should show up then. Worked for me on all of our PCs.

Well, yes, it did go away, once Gary upgraded the UBB software.
I'm afraid I can't quite understand what you're describing here. Drag the icon "towards the right"? To where? And to do what? That's used to add a bookmark or shortcut in another location, such as the Windows desktop. It has no effect on what is displayed.
That icon comes from the Website -- and, yes, I've cleared the cache recently, repeatedly and manually. (Doing so in Netscape's Preferences or IE's Internet Options never removes absolutely every cached file.)

Well I can attest it did not go away from my laptop Grey. Its there now and was during the upgrade.
As for dragging the icon, its the procedure Favicon used to have listed on their site for making the icon show up. And it does work because on Caroline's PC the icon was not showing until I did just what I described. You place your cursor on the icon showing, left click and drag it towards the right, along the address bar, not up or down, just straight along. The icon should then change to the LW icon.
That is how it works under IE. For other browsers I don't know. And in just looking at Favicon's site, they no longer seem to have a FAQ section for this problem.

I take that back. The FAQ is still there. This is what it says for IE: Why can’t I see my favicon in the address/location bar? In Internet Explorer, click the icon in the address bar. Hold down the button and move the icon a tiny bit to the right and let go. Try this two or three times. Usually that is all you need to do! The IE, and other, FAQ can be found here .

Well, I tried the Favicon.com technique quoted above. It worked in IE 5.5 -- to change it from the generic IE icon to the lightbulb icon. It wouldn't change any further, whether dragging or shift-dragging repeatedly. It didn't work at all in Netscape 7.02.
No change resulted, either, from creating a new bookmark, clearing browser caches (again), or clearing and rebuilding Windows' ShellIconCache system file.
Favicon.com's page says that this feature is "being supported" by AOL (that is, Netscape), but gives no details.
I've noticed that this icon is not as "sticky" in Netscape as it should be, with its not appearing if a page takes more than about a minute to load (I have a 55 kbps dial-up connection). It then reverts to the default Netscape "ribbon." But on revisiting a Website anew, the icon does come back.
I know you don't care for Netscape, Scott, but a sizable minority does still use it, so I thought you ought to know.

From what I've read today Netscape doesn't support Favicon but Mozilla does. They are acting like AOL and Netscape are one when you can use Netscape without AOL. So I'm really not clear if they mean AOL doesn't allow the use or if Netscape itself doesn't.
I also deleted the icon from the board and added a backup copy to see if that would help. Now all I can see is the stupid lightbulb. And I know my backup was the LW icon as I checked it with my paint program first.
I'll reboot and clear my cache and try again.

Whatever you did, Scott -- I made no changes to the browser -- the LW Favicon is now showing up in my Netscape 7.02 URL box and window tabs. Thanks, in any event.

I'm glad it's working for you now Steve. But for me I'm still stuck with the IE icon. I don't know what happened but I know the icon is the right one in the right directory. So I'm not going to worry about it as long as it's working for others.

And BTW, I had to figure out a bug with the calendar hack last night and posted the solution to UBBDev! And I've done it again. I've fixed the problem on my own (Well, I sorta did what SoM suggested but I knew about it from working on it before in 6.5)! I've reported my fix to UBBDev!

When you go to edit a UBB-coded title in SPHQ, some of the HTML shows up in the box. (I think it's because the value="" 'catches' on the first
" in the edit, so if theres a <font size="(something)">, the something)">
part shows up. It's not major, and doesn't lose anything so it can just be
deleted by the user, but I may as well point it out. (the code box is because it won't let me post this otherwise)

All of the hacked UBB codes aren't as intergrated into the board as one might like. Editing some extra UBB codes I've added spits out the HTML code used to create it.
It's a bug that people more knowledgable than I are trying to work out.

Hack attempt logged or corrupt/altered member file found with extra fields. ('00000005')

was what I got on trying to get into the MMB. Not sure what is up with Beagz' profile but it is way out of whack. Unfortunately I couldn't find the problem as it was not the same as previous member file errors. So I've deleted his file for now until I can talk to Gary. This will at least open up the MMB.

Beagz and perhaps others (I know I had to edit Grey's last night) still have a flag picked from the flag hack. The upgrade sees these profiles as corrupt.
Scott, just delete the flag and the few empty lines between it and the last line of the profile. I'll look around for others.

Okay, no problem. The flag left-overs are a new one to me. So is there a spot in a profile where we should know that is the correct end of the profile's code and anything past it can be deleted or do we need to take it on a hack to hack basis?
I guess I'm just waiting for the day when its a series of numbers smack in the middle of the code that we have to figure out.

Right now the last line should be something like this:
check_nograems|^|0|!!|check_nosig|^|1|!!|tos_date|^|1077072236|!!|hide_quick_reply|^|0
There may be empty lines after it, since the programmer(s) have more features to add. But the flag hack was at line 60 or whatever. I know another way to fix this so that the board doesn't register a hack attempt, but for now anything below the above line can and should be deleted.

The front page is claiming (@ 11:31pm GMT, 10 Nov 2004 ) that the MMB's got 0 topics and only 17 posts (although it said 2 posts at one point). And the datestamp isn't showing on the "Last Post" column for the MMB. Topics show within the MMB itself, and no other fora are affected. What's Pow-Wham-Kersplat-Web done this time?
