It was Legionnaires 45, and Gates was an outcast. It was mentioned that Gates was considered by his fellow Vyrgans as a bit of a pain and a troublemaker, and that almost all the other Vyrgans thought alike. Not quite a hive-mind, but they just had the same opinions on most things - hence a lack of innovation and creativity.

It is interesting how we sometimes tend to assign traits to animal-like aliens similar to those that we associate with that earth animal.
Dog-like aliens are loyal and clannish. Cat aliens are flirty and capricious. Bug aliens are inflexible and have a hive mentality. Snake aliens are treacherous bad-guys that hiss when they talk.
It could be fun to go against type, and have an alien that looks like an anthropomorphic dolphin or otter or something, an animal that we humans associate with 'friendly' and 'playful,' and have those aliens just be horrible dicks, or a terrifying looking poison-drooling fang-twitching spider-alien race that are total pacifists and a highly spiritual race, reknowned for their diplomatic skills.

That's one thing that I think Giffen excelled at with his aliens in the 80's.....a bunch of them looked quite monstrous but were the complete opposite; Circadia Senius, that guy whose name I forget from the Science Asteroid, etc...

Note *** indicates character was left off the original poll, and only received write-in votes, which I suspect seriously disadvantaged said characters. I'm also pretty sure Nam'Lor's hyper-aura is to blame.

Interesting that Gates beat out Timber Wolf as the most popular Legion Lost Legionnaire. He's sure not marketed as the most popular member of the team in their current title. I'm also surprised how poorly Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad did over all with them being 2 of the 3 founders.
