Playing around in Photoshop tonight, I thought I would see if I could start making a series of Mission Monitor Board symbols for the folks on this board.

I started fairly easy with the board owners (two of whom had existing parallels in the actual LSH, anyway... so), but I really dig the way these came out, so I think I'm going to make a bunch more.

Anyway to start: Lightning Lad, Nightcrawler, and Saturn Girl:

 -
 -
 -

Next up, I'll try the LMB founders: Lash, Lardy and Candle.

Very shiny!

I'm not sure what Nighty thinks, but maybe a dark cloud of smoke with two red eyes and / or a white fanged smile peering out of it would be appropriately Nightcrawler-ish.

In keeping with the actual LSH symbols, I'm trying to err on the side of simple - something that is abstract enough to be symbolic, but at the same time conveys who the person is. If any of them too widely miss the mark, though, just let me know and I'll give it another shot.

So, next batch: Lard Lad, Lash Lad, and Shadowplay in Candlelight Lass:

 -
 -
 -

Lardy's is a take on his chest symbol from dedman's drawing (a stylized 'L') but I also kind of like how it suggests a flexed bicep, in a way.

Lash's is sort of too detail-y, but I couldn't draw a whip freehand, so I stole an image from online and shortened it a bit.

For Candle, I debated just using a simple image of a glowing candle, but I think the Tragedy/Comedy faces she used back in the day better captured her character's light/dark balance powers.

Up next, two fairly easy ones to round out the charter LMB members: Cobalt Kid and Mystery Lad (formerly Tsarin)

[LOL]

So, Cobalt Kid and Mystery Lad, the other two charter LMBers apart from the founders are just simple lifts (Cosmic Boy, and incognito Element Lad from Adv. 307). Still pretty neat looking, though, I think:

 -
 -

Next on the docket: Three animal inspired LMBers (Hint: all three animals begin with the letter, "R")

Ravenette, Rocket Cat and Roosterboy? [Wink]

Thanks, everyone!

So, remember what I said about trying to keep a simple design?

... and then there's Rocky. Darn your plumage! [Wink]

So, the zoological entries for the day are: Lil' Rhino, Ram Boy, and Rockhopper Lad:

 -
 -
 -

I was going to go a bit more iconic with Rammy (just an Aries sign) but the three looked nice together with the animal head silhouettes... so.

Up next: We hit the streets of Legion World in search of coffee, cocktails, and counsel (chances are, if you're in the LMB, you could use at least one of the three.)

I'm not the betraying kind . . . though that wouldn't prevent me from being expelled for other reasons, I suppose.

My original name, He Who Wanders, was borrowed from Mon-El/M'Onel, if that's any help. [Smile]

I have a couple ideas for yours, Dev, but I'm not entirely satisfied with either... I need to give yours a bit of a think.

So, this round we have a few of the more successful proprietors of Legion World, respectively the owners of Cafe Cramer, The Super Law Firm... of Space, and, of course, SHAKES Bar - Fat Cramer, Quislet Esq., and Semi Transparent Fellow:

 -
 -
 -

Next up: an Interlac Interlude... as we have a guy with something to say, and two others for whom a single letter says it all.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Ex, you're damn brillaint, you know that? I swear, you're like Paul McCartney in how you take what at first feels like little ideas and turn them into something hugely magical.

Love mine, which is perfect (and matches my graemlin). Love everyone else as well, especially this latest batch.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

I like mine. I was expecting a gavel or something. I like this a lot better than what I was thinking.

Mine should be easy.

Paul McCartney? Thanks, Cobie, but trust me, with this nose I'll never get beyond Ringo. [Wink]

Ok, so this next batch is a bit simple as it's the "Interlac" section, but I think conceptually they fit well. So up next is... well... me to start, followed by Rickshaw and Varalent:

 -
 -
 -

I couldn't imagine Rick's being anything but and, as I said above, "Vee" and "Ex" are about as clear a connection as they come. For mine I also like how the sort of "hourglass" shape calls to mind all the time-traveling my character has done over the past couple years.

To supplement this "breather" round, I also gathered up all the ones I've done so far to see how they lay out together:

 -

Pretty spiffy, though the gold sheen effect doesn't really carry through in the smaller size. I'll have to redo that when the whole group is done.

For tomorrow's batch: It's Ladies' Night!

It's on the schedule, sb. Trust me, when I get a taste for doing something I like, I get obsessive about doing it fully.

Wait... how many Legion Worlders are there? Over 1500 you say? OK, well maybe not fully but I'll try to do at least the top 100, plus a few other lower ranked posters who are nevertheless prominent.

say....once you get those symbols established, can we use them as our avatars?

Posted by Exnihil on :

Next up, three lovely ladies - Arachne, Fanfic Lady, and Tempest:

 -
 -
 -

I'm actually very happy with the Tempest one, because it's so simple and yet works on multiple levels. It is a Celtic symbol that I think evokes not only her current name (with the form of the wave) but also her previous backstory with the Witches of Avalon (a trio of women).

Up next: No fewer than five entries. In honor of that number, let's say that name of each will contain a "V". (Even stranger, now that I look at the list, each one has a "V" in the same place in the name. Hint, hint. [Wink] )

Absolutely, SK, I was already planning on doing so. It might take a little while, because I'm planning on doing about 100 or so of these, but you're on the docket. [Smile]

Just a note for those who have been checking these out. The more I looked at the "cleome" one I did, the more I just really didn't like it.

It was too involved (it was actually nine different layers in Photoshop), and too much detail gets lost in this format. It's better to keep them simple, so I'm scrapping that one (the post is edited) and I'll give it another try later. Sorry, cleome, if you didn't see it, but trust me, it wasn't very good.

OK, next up... five with a "V". We have: Dev Em, Invisible Brainiac, Bevis (formerly Lucien Lad), Novelty, and Poverty Lad:

 -
 -
 -
 -
 -

Bevis and Pov's are their own character's chest logos that I believe each of them created themselves.

Invisible Brainiac is obviously just a combo of the existing logos for Invisible Kid II and Brainiac 5.

Novelty, for those who don't know, is a huge toy collector and particularly likes "The Masters of the Universe" figures, so if he had a power, the obvious one to me would of course be "The Power of Grayskull", the logo for which I chose here.

For Dev I went through a ton of different combinations of elements to capture his half Durlan/half Daxamite character - antennae, spit curls, Tudor collars, cape disks - before I finally just boiled it down to the design here. So simple, but I think really effective. As a bonus, I noticed after I sized it that the buzz-cut lines on the left side pull the eye to the right side, where the absence of them suggests the letter "D".

Up next: Which three letter Legion Worlder beginning with S has a connection to ancient Egypt? Well... two actually.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

ah Set!! and ..... hmmm Seth?

I love them all - they are really innovative and awesome, esp, Dev and Bevis! [Smile]

Didn't see it, but I'm fine if you just wanna use a slightly decorative letter "C" or even a green leaf shape or something, Ex. The spider lily is a pretty complex shape, I agree. In the abstract, it doesn't really read as "flower" in the way that a daisy or rose would.

No rush.

(BTW, so far my favorite is Quislet's. The little necktie is just soooooo cute!)

Lucien/Bev were always SO blingy and Dev's is really an amazingly good design, period.

OK, as promised, the next batch are two LMBers with Egyptian connections (the first sharing his name with an Egyptian god, and the second hailing from ancient Egypt - along with Stoopid Cat and Numnuts the Incomprehensible... eh... it's a long story... ask Abin Quank about it):

Set and Stu (formerly Iron Rat):

 -
 -

Set's logo is a combination of his namesake's two symbols - the Ankh overlayed by the Was Scepter.

Since this update took a while, how about an appropriate bonus image? Here is the original Legion podcaster:

Awkward Pause Boy:

Here's the full set thus far:

 -

The Monitor Board is really filling up! [Smile]

Posted by Exnihil on :

OK, tonight we're featuring three "Kids" and, appropriately, all three feature cartoon elements in their symbols. We have Kid Charlemagne, Kid Marvel, and Kid Prime:

 -
 -
 -

Kid C, following his avatar, I've represented by Marvin the Martian's Roman helmet (Charlemagne was a Roman Emperor, I suppose, but I'm guessing he never wore one of these. [Smile] )

Kid Marvel's logo that he designed for himself is the Captain Marvel lightning bolt (his character uses the power of Shazam). Unfortunately, though, it looks exactly like the logo for Lightning Lad, so I augmented it by adding the symbol that Joe uses for Kid Marvel's alter ego, Joeboy Harvestar, which is the star design from the cartoon Jem and the Holograms. I think it works pretty well because it contains the idea of one identity contained in another, and also suggests Kid M's facial look, with the bolt over his eye.

Kid Prime, of course, uses Optimus Prime as his avatar, but, as with pevious logos, that got fairly detailed once I started adding the different layers, so I opted for the more streamlined general Autobot logo.

Up next: We travel to Kal-El's planet... and blow it to Kingdom Come.

Awesome, glad you like it, Fanfie!

Up next we have two Superman inspired fellows, Krypton Kid and Superboy MDDJR:

 -
 -

For Superboy, I tried to do a take on the Kingdom Come Superboy that he uses for his avatar (not the KC Superman, which is actually a bit easier). The difficulty with abstracting that design, though, is the fact that it uses the "Archie" Legion convention of the solid color down the middle, with the two bars of color on either side. If I took it directly, it wound up just looking like a Superboy T-shirt, so I scaled it back, cutting it off on the bottom of the S, and including just the edge of the top where it starts to blend into the cape. The net effect, I think, is that I was left with the S logo sitting on a shape which begins to suggest the "M" in "MDDJR" (which I'm assuming must be our Superboy's real world initials?)

Krypton Kid simply uses a map of Krypton from the Silver Age (which really gave the Photoshop lasso tool a workout. [Smile] )

Up next: This thread heats up... no... it cools down... stop... you're both right.

Posted by superboymddjr on :

[Hug] [Hug] (hey Nightcrawler - can you please create the biggest hug one?) that's awesome! and yeah MDDJR is my real world initials. [Smile]

and now I would like to request that one to become my avatar!

Posted by Exnihil on :

Thanks, supes! I'm glad you like it. I was worried it might be a bit too simple but, as I say, I kept trying different designs for the KC look, and they all kept looking like a torso in a T-shirt.

OK, fairly simple additions this time out, as our hot, cold, and hot/cold LMBers get their symbols from a few direct lifts from some industrial hazard signs.

We have Caliente, Frio, and Icefire:

 -
 -
 -

Cali's is the hazard sign for "Flammable", her chilly sister's is the sign for "Extreme Cold" and Icefire, of course, combines the two.

After I did this batch, I looked over the user list again and realized that we actually have our own Polar Boy, as well (though it looks like he's been fairly absent these past few years), so... bonus symbol, again a lift from the LSH:

 -

Up next: the LMB heads to the big city for a stroll... but will they walk with a purpose, or just wander about?

This morning our update includes three new logos for He Who LSHes (formerly He Who Wanders), Mattropolis, and Walk With Crowds:

 -
 -
 -

He Who was possibly the most difficult one I've done so far - not in the execution, but in the initial design. I was just stumped in how to abstract that concept. I know that Huey had earlier suggested a M'Onel connection, but that didn't seem visually intuitive enough.

When I was doing the Cali and Frio logos last round, though, I was looking at a bunch of road sign logos and got the idea of a replicated "Walk" logo for Walk With Crowds. Then it occured to me that that might be the solution for He Who, as well.

I used a variant "Walk" logo for hiking, and added a dotted wandering path behind him (I had the "Jeffy" gag from "Family Circus" in mind). The path is obviously a double-W, and the combination of the staff and the hiker's right leg, crossed by the left leg, suggests the "H".

HWW's drove me batty but, looking at it posted, I think it's actually one of my favorites so far. I reallly like the way the light effect seems to focus on his back foot meeting the path and almost makes it look like he's walking away.

For Mattropolis, I wanted to do a city skyline in the subtle form of an M. Although I did do that, I have to admit it's not fully what I had in mind. I wanted the buildings to be fully connected, without the spaces in between; and I wanted to dot them with a series of irregular windows to suggest lights at night. That design looked really good as a flat image, but when I began adding the embossing effect, so much of the detail was lost. It wound up looking like a chewed up computer punchcard. So I redid Matty's with less detail than I wanted. It still looks nice, I think, just not as nice as I had imagined. [Frown]

Up next: The LMB goes Hollywood.

You know those negative space pics where you at first see a vase, then two faces, and afterward you just can't unsee the second image?

When I was doing this one, it had sort of a somber feel to me - this solitary guy wandering across the land with his staff... but, now, I totally keep seeing the pogo stick thing.

[LOL]

Too funny! I should have tried to angle the path backward more but, clearly, diminishing perspective isn't my strong suit.

Really glad you like it, though!

A couple quick updates as our cinematic duo prepares to take the LMB story to the silver screen. We have Actor Lad and Director Lad:

 -
 -

Next up: A couple of detectives track down the "Case of the LMB Enigma"

Before the next round, I think we've had enough updates to warrant another group shot:

 -

Looking pretty good... though I do need something to break up the similar shapes of Mystery Lad and Nighty. Where is "My Whee Fem" when I need her?

42 down... 90 something to go! And, as yet, there's no Sharky or Sarky or Peebs... oh my! We've got a whole clan worth of Quanks... and I don't know about you, but I've yet to see a sign of a certain nelly cap. Jillikers!

Should be a fun couple of weeks. [Smile]

Posted by superboymddjr on :

how about adding the "BamF" to Nightcrawler? just a black cloud Bamf! ? thats more fit to the Night's character. whenever I have some conversation with friends, I tend to say "that NC Bamf then Bamf then Bamf" (I am speaking in ASL, [Smile] , which signifies NC's teleportation power.) How about that? That would set both NC and Mystery Lad apart.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Yeah, I'm thinking you're right (Set had mentioned something like that earlier as well). I think the tail works well, but perhaps a cloud at the bottom of it.

Seeing them all lined up, there are actually a few revisions I'll probably make later:

-The Interlac logos for myself and Varalent, although actually scaled the same as any other, still look overly huge when seen side by side because of their blockiness. I think I'll make them smaller.

-Rhino should be smaller as well. It is a good logo, but he is " lil' " Rhino, after all.

-The borders on Saturn Girl and Shady are actually messed up - I accidentally added them when viewing it at 150% as opposed to 100 and misjudged.

-Novelty is canted slightly counter-clockwise and should be straightened (it's probably not that noticable, but I can totally see it).

-And the center of Lash's whip really bothers me.

Ah... OCD. [Wink]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

If you're revising some anyway, it may be easier to work with this streamlined rockhopper logo that Sketch Lad made.

That is sleek! Sketchy is really the man. The next time I do a group shot, Rocky, I'll convert that into this format for you.

For now though, we take a look at a mysterious LMBer and the two most likely to be able to track him down. We have C J Taylor (AKA Enigma), Legion Tracker, and Matlock:

 -
 -
 -

I'll be honest, I don't really know CJ (but as his LMB name is Enigma, I suppose that's appropriate), so the approach I was going to take was to just try to tie his symbol into the Enigma encryption machine from WWII. That turned out to be not very graphic friendly, so I then tried a different approach, playing around with different arrangements of question marks. In doing so I noticed that if you turn a question mark upside down and then reflect it back on itself it seems to suggest the letters... C and J! Coincidence?!?! Somehow... I don't think so. [Wink]

For Legion Tracker I used a compass rose pointing to... well... Legion. [Smile] Looking at it now, it looks a lot like Dawnstar's headband symbol, so, hey... doubly appropriate for a tracker.

For Matlock I was going to use the logo for the Andy Griffith version of the character, but that was a bit boring, so I added a sort of Carmen Sandiego magnifying glass. A little bit hokey... yeah... but I think it looks nice.

Rocky's link above put me in this mindset, so up next: We take a look at some of the sketchier LMB members.

... I always thought 'lil' Rhino meant big Rhino actually ....

... wait... are you saying the "horn" he's talking about is actually...

<slowly dawning awareness>

Ohhhhhhhhh! [Smile]

OK, up next, three of Legion Worlds best artists, Drake B 3004, Monkey-Eater Lad, and Sketch Lad:

 -
 -
 -

Drake and M-E each use logos of their own design. Drake's is obviously a modified Wildfire logo used in his avatar, and M-E's is a combo of Pacman going after Paul Frank's Julius the Monkey character.

For Sketchy I really wanted to use the M.C. Escher drawing hands, but based on previous attempts to do this style using more than three layers, I didn't have much hope. It shouldn't have worked... I don't know why it worked... but, damn... I'm so glad it worked!

Next up: It's about time.

Thanks again, everyone!

Just a note - These symbols are just my take on your characters, based only upon what I know of you here. If anyone likes this style, but would like to see something other than what I came up with, just shoot me a note and I'll gladly give it a second shot (or heck, a third even). I just like messing around in PhotoShop. [Smile]

So, tonight's update travels even farther ahead as we get two similarly named LMBers, Future and Future King:

 -
 -

I debated on how best to represent Future, until I found a pretty cool piece of clip art, modified here (and with a more appropriate time for Legion fans added as an Easter Egg).

Since I didn't want Future and Future King to be too similar, the latter is just me being incredibly cheeky. [Wink]

Next up: I'm actually out of pocket tomorrow night for a concert (U2!) so I'm only going to post one new symbol tomorrow, but it is appropriately themed.

Well it's a sunny day today, so let's bike down to the beach, do a little surfing, a little girl watching, and a little boating... wait a minute... what's that?

Uh, oh. We're gonna need a bigger boat.

Today's updates are Bicycle Repair Man, Hot Chick, Mine Surfer, Shark Lad, and Sonnie:

 -
 -
 -
 -
 -

I don't know Sonnie, but I do know that he uses his own painting of a reclining Buddha as his avatar, so I used a Buddhist dharma wheel, which also serves as a sort of a play on words as its shape suggests a sun to me.

BRM is fairly self explanatory - a bike with a first aid logo - as is Mine Surfers - a surfboard with the old "minesweeper" smiley.

I don't know the full story of Lardy's character Hot Chick, but I think there might be some evil lurking there, so I like how the bikini almost looks like a slightly evil smile.

And Sharky... well... if I gotta tell you. [Wink]

Up next: In honor of the expectant dad at the top of this page, and the impending reboo... er... relaunch... we meet, "The LMB Dark".

Thanks, guys. Can't really take much credit for Sharky's as the movie poster image is pretty much the definition of iconic, all I did in my redrawing is just widen and give a little more symmetry to ol' Bruce's smile.

Well, I see by the clock that's it's after midnight, and that's when the ghouls and goblins of the LMB come out to prey. So run for your lives, here comes Blacula, Dedman, Ghost of Numf-El, and RTVU2 (known on occasion as Count Vudoo).

 -
 -
 -
 -

Blacula's is a retooled bit of the poster for the 70's flick, "Blacula" (what else?)

Deddy's is a reworked version of the original DC Deadman logo into an Interlac version. I know interlac shouldn't be hollow, but as a solid it looked like nothing but a rippled blob

I don't know who Numf-El is, but I assumed that even a Kryptonian ghost would still wear a headband. That little Pacman fellow's band is also topped with a Kryptonian "N".

Again, I'm not familiar with rtvu2, but I do know from LMB history that he was called Count Vudoo and ran a place called the Vudoo Lounge, so I thought him a good fit with our other horror-themed members.

Up next: Let's hear it for the boys!

I do recall the ghost of (pre-Byrne) Jor-El having a headband when he got a cover. So yeah, Kryptonians don't seem to change outfits when they die, only when rebooted.

Boys will be boys. Doubly so if they're in the LMB. Today we've got: Blockade Boy, Lad Boy, Portfolio Boy, Power Boy and Star Boy:

 -
 -
 -
 -
 -

Star Boy is a direct LSH lift.

For Portfolio Boy, I went with a little artistic license and actually based it off a briefcase (but at least it was a Ralph Lauren briefcase. Stay classy, LMB. [Wink] )

For Lad Boy I like the double male symbol, but it looked very odd facing the same way (like the symbol was pregnant with a baby symbol) so I flipped the little one to try to balance it.

I had the same problem with my original Blockade Boy that I had with my own (too substantial and blocky) so I tried to vary it up a bit with more of a fence-type blockade.

And for Peebs, I wanted to suggest both his name (in the form of like an atom, or a nova) and at the same time his origins (from Apokolips). The problem is that, for me at least, "Kirby Krackle" is a monster to do. I must have redone those rings like 10 times, and I still don't think I got it entirely. I think those pocky energy lines that Kirby did must work best as a flat effect, and the embossing here makes it seem odd. Let me know what you think, Peebs. If you don't like it I can try something different.

Next up: Are you guys twins?

You have no idea how old this makes me feel to say this but, I think that reference might be before your time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=botdmsQilnU

So, as yesterday's clue alluded to, up next we have three LMBers who, although they are quite prominent in LMB lore, I've never had the pleasure of "meeting" on line - Beagz (also Beagle Boy), Harbinger, and Spellbinder (Princess Crujectra):

 -
 -
 -

The logos for Spellbinder and Beagz were actually created by Cru himself, with Crujectra's stylized "S" appearing as a brooch.

For Harbinger, I went to her fanfic story, Legion 35C, where she is described as a Naltorian seer. I didn't want to do a direct Dream Girl lift, so I went with the Greek "Psi' character to represent powers of a mental nature.

OK... 70 down- Group Shot Time!

 -

A couple revisions since last time:

- I scaled down the Interlac symbols for me and Varalent to appear less blocky when seen with the rest of them.
- I reduced Semi's symbol to match the similar one for Lad Boy, and also made the "transparent" section more symmetrical
- I fixed the borders on Saturn Girl and Shady
- I felt that Walk With Crowds was actually too crowded so I removed a couple of the figures and scaled the rest up
- I replaced Rocky's symbol with the more streamlined one that Sketchy had created.

I actually changed my mind on Rhino and am going to leave him as is.

Still to revise:

- I want to add a cloud element to Nighty's
- I've got to fix the center portion of Lash's whip
- I've got to straighten Novelty's (and perhaps make it larger)
- I'm going to redo Dedman's (I don't like the bottom portion at all)
- I'm going to see if I can fix the left part of Drakes (the shadow seems way too dark)
- I might redo Future King's (I was actually quite drunk that night and just trying to be clever)
- I did an alternate one for Candle by request, but I wanted to let her see it first before posting it.

So why no "Next Up..." tag?

Well, because I see by that clock that it's time to start packing for San Diego. I'm Comic-Con bound, so this thread is going on hiatus for a week.

When I get back, though, full speed ahead filling in those gaps.

Coming up, we've got a certain Mr. Ester, Thriftshop Debutante, Outdoor Miner, Kent Shakespeare, Faraway Lad, those young un's Sarcasm Kid and Emily Sivana, a whole clan worth of Quanks... and lots more.

See you in a week. [Smile]

It's been a bit since I've done these, so let's start back with a couple simple ones to get back into the swing.

Today we have the ultra-powered LMBers: Ultra Jorge and Ultra Matt (also called the Boy with Ultra Powers):

 -
 -

Both are just simple Legion/Interlac swipes (go easy on me... I'm still jet lagged [Wink] )

Up next: Hwaet! Ye Olde Thyme Mefsage Board Pofters.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Tonight we travel back in time to three LMBers who would not have been out of place in Merrie Olde England: Kent Shakespeare, Lance's Realm and Malvolio:

 -
 -
 -

For Kent, I wanted an appropriate image that reflected both his humor and the the sad fact that he left our board, so what better than the jester's skull from Hamlet? "Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him..." I also like how the shape of the eye sockets suggest the frame-less lenses of the actual Kent from 5YL.

Lance, who goes avatarless, I've represented in the past with the pilot character, "Lance" from "Voltron". Recently, however Sketchy did a sort of "Dragonslayer" take that I really dug, so here we've got a heraldic dragon with the lance hanging over him.

I don't know Malvolio, but I do know that his namesake character from "Twelfth Night" is known for the ruse that has him wind up wearing garters, so here, I've used a take on the crest of the "Knights of the Garter" minus the cross shield usually in the middle.

Next up: Arts and crafts

Luckily for me, old Doc M doesn't remember his incarnation several lifetimes ago when he, a wealthy Spanish nobleman, Don Octavio del Flores, commisioned poor artist Xavier Nahillo to design a symbol for his coat of arms. Nahillo, sworn enemy of the Spanish nobility, betrayed his patron by crafting a repugnant image of Spain being crushed beneath the boot heel of del Flores. Though the image amused del Flores himself (so much so that he laughed for a full hour) nevetheless, at the public unveiling, it sparked a riot during which he was stoned by the angry mob.

What shall I draw for Doc this time around? You will learn the answer to that most important query very shortly!

So, this time out we have three LMBers who have taken their Legion fandom to the next level, and crafted three of my favorite Legion related works that I've seen over the years. Respectively, they are the creators of The Legion Help File, an amazing set of Legion Statuettes and quite possibly the most erudite legion website out there, The Legion Abstract.

All three chose not to go with code names and instead joined the LMB as Chaim Mattis Keller, Jim Gallagher, and Matthew E(lsmlie):

 -
 -
 -

Chaim is represented by an encyclopedia set, representing the massive amount of research he put into his Help File.

Jim is a block beginning to be carved by a hammer and chisel, the three shapes coming together in a stylized "G"

And Matthew is an interlac "E" done in the style similar to abstract artist Piet Mondrian.

Next up: I give a second go at an earlier symbol that didn't make the grade as we pay a visit to The Green of the 30th century.

...aaaand we're back!

This time out we look at our two plant-based LMBers: Cleome and Suddenly Seymour:

 -
 -

I had a really tough time with cleome (I even posted an earlier version, only to delete it after stewing about how bad it looked.) She suggested going with an Interlac "C" entwined with plant vines, so that's what I went with. I still used a cleome at the focal point in the lower right, but it really is a difficult flower to represent. If the LMB ever gets rebooted, I'm hereby mandating that cleome is "re-imagined" as like "Daisy" or "Tulip". [Smile]

Seymour, on the other hand, is, of course, the Audrey Two from "Little Shop of Horrors" and, I don't at all mind saying, is pretty badass.

Next up: So, since this time we saw our "green" teammates... next we give equal time to the "red".

Thanks for the nice words, everybody!

Today we've got three LMBers who will have you seeing red: Crymsun Kid, Dave Hackett (also known as Rouge), and - because it wouldn't be a Legion without a traitor - our old turncoat, the Red Bee:

 -
 -
 -

For Crymsun, I tossed around a couple idea (Crimson Tide, King Crimson) before finding something on the web claiming that the name, "Crymsun" signifies "bloodshed". Personally, I think that might be a bit dubious but, eh, any port in a storm. I used a swipe from the chest logo of the most recent incarnation of the Crimson Avenger from JSA.

For Dave, I thought of tying his Rouge name to the "Moulin Rouge" and maybe using a windmill... it's French... he's a big music fan... but decided that was too much of a stretch. Instead, I just kept it simple and went with the chest logo of the character he uses as an avatar, the "Legends of Dead Earth" Wildfire.

And for the Bee, uber-simple... but I think uber-effective, too. There is something about the combination of the size and repitition of the honeycomb pattern that just says "menance" to me. It suggests both a single minded efficiency and looming threat. How could the LMB not know he would betray them?

Up next:

"Hey! You totally forget one of the "red" ones!"

"I didn't forget her, I just thought she would be better grouped in a whole "Next Generation" LMB thing. It's the next one up, and you're in it, too."

"Right... I'm so sure."

So... what's the over/under on how long it takes that phrase to earn its own "101 Things" thread over on the MMB? This can't end well...

Really glad you guys like your symbols... if I can make just one LMBer "squee," I feel I've done my job. [Smile]

So, next, we've got the LMB: The Next Generation. These are the younger posters on Legion World who are the last, best hope for a shiny tomorrow... no... sorry... couldn't keep a straight face on that one. [Wink]

Among our youth brigade in the LMB we've got: Karie, Kid Flash 2 Fan, Red Arrow (aka Emily Sivana) and, of course, Sarcasm Kid:

 -
 -
 -
 -

Although Karie's been around for longer than I, I actually know very little about her. I do know she's from New Zealand... and once sported a fez at a Morrocan-themed birthday but, unfortunately, fezzes don't hold up well to Photoshop embossing (trust me, I tried). So, instead Karie gets a Southern Cross to represent her flip-side-of-the-globedness.

KF2F is a fantastic artist who really needs to start posting more of her gorgeous work. For her name choice, she gets a Bart Allen emblem all her own.

For Emily, I wanted to represent a couple aspects of her character - the fact that she's an archer, and the familial link to the Power of Shazam. I'm not sure if this comes across (I can see it, but I drew it so I'm biased) but her arrowhead in this design is the Shazam lightning bolt. I think that detail might get lost when I reduce it for the group shots.

And for Sarky, I sort of went back and forth on what I wanted to do (I was thinking maybe like a curse substitute that you see in comics, like "#$!*%" or something, but that seemed too crass). Then I happened to stumble across a T-shirt design explicitly for "Sarcasm" and that was all she wrote. It's totally stolen, but I don't think I could have come up with a better one than that. I did change the light source from the upper left that I usually use on these to directly above to try to give the illusion of a forward head tilt (sort of a Giffen-shadow thing).

Up next: So we met the New Kids... now it's time for the Almost But Not Quite New Kids (or the ABN-QNKs, if you're into that whole brevity thing.)

Thanks also to Future, Emily, And Sarky. I'm really glad you guys are enjoying this project. I started out to do just the top 100 and a few others... but it looks like the final count will come in around 140.

So I was going to do full set of the Quank clan all at once, but after realizing how many characters that entails, I think I'll pepper them throughout the remainder.

First up are a matched set of tiny killers, the "Hit Girl" and "Deadly Little Miho" of the LMB - Everyday Girl and My Whee Fem:

 -
 -

Each of their logos use their weapons of choice - the 9mm Berettas for EG and the butterfly knives for My (opened to suggest an "M").

I tried to angle the two in a similar fashion, so they would act as a nice matched pair.

Up next - It's time to turn your head... and cough.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Two more, as we get our checkup with the medical personnel of the LMB: Doctor One and Sam Pureheart:

 -
 -

Sort of straightforward for each, as each uses slightly modified existing medical symbols.

Dr. One is the caduceus with the truck removed to form an Interlac "1" on top (even though any reasonable person would say that an Interac "1" should be two circles. [Smile] )

And Everyday Girl's EMT boyfriend, Sam, just uses the existing EMT symbol, with the serpent replaced by an Interlac "S".

Up next - OK, I've got 91 down, so that will make a nice 7 x 13 group shot. I'm going to take a couple of days and do some fixes on the ones I've done so far (as well as a requested revision), then the group shot... then, full speed ahead to the finish line!

Posted by Exnihil on :

Hiya, BRM... long time, no see!

Before we get to the group shot, although I did do a bunch of little fixes (annotated at the bottom) I completely redid two of them, so I figured they should get the full size treatment: Future King And Nightcrawler:

 -
 -

I wasn't happy with the original FK one - I was going for the "Checkers' promotion, when a piece will one day be a "king', but I think it was to small to be effective (I actually had to use just a quarter of the checker board for it even to show up). So in the revision, I kept that idea - but abstracted it, removing the board and blowing up the regular and king pieces.

The original Nightcrawler was actually the 2nd one of these I ever did and I was still learning some tricks. As a result, it was somewhat simplistic (a blended question mark/arrow combo). Now that I have gotten a little more adept in this program, if anyone deserves the "deluxe" treatment, it's Nighty. Thanks to Set and Superboymmdjr for encouraging me to redo it... I think this one is like 100 times better.

So now... group shot time:

 -
 -

Apart from the new logos for Future King and Nightcrawler, I also made the following fixes:

- Standardized the light source on Beagz and Lightning Lad
- Redid the Dedman logo to make it a bit more crisp and consistent
- Fixed the too-dark shadows on DrakeB3004
- Finally fixed the center of Lash's whip to make it more circular and distinct
- Reduced the scale of Mystery Lad to be more consistent
- Increased the scale of Novelty and straightened it out

The ones I might revise after seeing them here:

- I think I might knock out the backing part of Kid Flash 2 Fan
- Jim Gallagher - I think it's a little too simplistic and I could do it more effectively
- I think the borders on Matthew E might be too dark
- I do have a new one for Candle in the hopper as well, but I want to give her the first look before posting it.

So... whew!

Up next - Back tomorrow as we start with again with the new ones (haven't picked a theme yet so it'll be a surprise to both of us.) [Smile]

I've only ever run across the Labradorian in TV show threads, but looking at his posts, it's clear he's a Canadian with a capital "CAN" (wait... what?) His logo here is the flag design for Newfoundland and Labrador, but rotated for a better symmetry (I apologize in advance if this does anything to threaten the uneasy truce between Legion World and Canada).

Lone Wolf Legionnaire is an old DCMB buddy of mine who also posts on LW. His logo here is simply the chest logo of Brin Londo from his first appearance as "Lone Wolf". We have another one coming down the line later that uses the Timber Wolf version.

Up next: Domo Arigato, Mr... Miss... and Ms. Roboto

It's time now to pay tribute to those LMB members who dream of electric sheep (as opposed to just regular sheep, like Cobalt Kid), the A.I.s amongst us - Giant Robotic Lesbian, Gigglebot Girl, and Professor H-0011 (profh0011).

 -
 -
 -

GRL was easy, needing to capture the fact that she's... well... giant, robotic, and lesbian. I scaled the lesbian logo to the border to make it larger when compared to all the others, and made it riveted...for her pleasure. (OK...that was bad... just pretend I never said that.)

Gigglebot Girl, Faraway Lad's main squeeze, is not actually a robot, but a girl to whom a group of nanobots have permanently bonded, but close enough for me. The headshot here is actually the design of artist Scott Reed, from whom Faraway commisioned an LMB comic years ago. (Seriously cool ...Check it out)

And for Prof I made a forward facing version of the robot he uses for an avatar (the source for which, I'm afraid I don't know... it kind of reminds me of "Conky" from Pee Wee's Playhouse in that sort of boxy robot way, but that's not it.)

After I started writing this, I realized I totally forgot to do LMB member, Mechana. I'll pick her up in a later wave.

Next up: The LMB gets a touch of class (No... it's not a hoax... why would you ask such a thing? [Wink] )

Thanks, Shady. BTW - I have your new one finished and I'll post it as bonus one during the next round.

But now it's time to class it up a bit, as we hit the town with two LMBers always dressed to the nines: Thriftshop Debutante and Zardi, the Eternal Man:

 -
 -

It is one of my bigger Legion World regrets that my posting paths don't cross those of Thriftshop Debutante more often... but we apparently post in different circles. That being said, I've always thought Teeds had the absolute best name on this board. Everytime I see it, it makes me think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's - the mix of elegant and down to earth at the same time. I was going to go the whole route of including Holly Golightly's tiara, sunglasses, cigarette holder, and necklace in this one, but once I did the necklace I was like... nope... I got it.

For Zardi - straightforward - I used his hat and walking stick from his golden-age comics appearances. Simple, but quite nice, in a sort of Mandrake the Magician way.

Up next - We're now up to 98 of these, so that means the next round will cross the century mark. For quite a few waves now, I've been dipping below the Hot 100 mark, but to celebrate the milestone, next round will have no fewer than 5 posters - all from the top 100.

Who gets the coveted 100th symbol? We will find out by Friday... barring, of course, any major calamities. [Wink]

I'm cutting it right to my self-imposed deadline on this one, but hopefully it was worth the extra time.

It's the 100th Symbol Extravaganza, featuring five of Legion World's Top 100 posters (as well as a bonus symbol for my biggest booster). So, without further ado - Blue Battler, Eryk Davis Ester (100th Symbol!), Ferro Boy, Jerry, Kid Quislet, and Shadowplay in Candlelight Lass

 -
 -
 -
 -
 -
 -

Ferro Boy is pretty much a direct Legion lift, but presented in stylized lowercase to represent the "Boy" as opposed to the traditional "Lad". (A lad is older than a boy... right? I'm saying, "yes, it is," so sue me. [Wink] )

For Kid Quislet, I sort of ripped off myself. Earlier, I had done one of these for Quislet Esq. which was the Legion Quislet symbol with a necktie. Though I don't really know Kid Quislet, in my mind, I imagine that he has to be Quis Esq.'s junior partner. I got in the mindset of Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella's "New Look Batman" when they always had Bruce and Dick dressed so formally and said, well, if Quis wears a necktie, then of course Kid Quis wears a bowtie. He is scaled slightly smaller as well.

I've seen Blue Battler's name around but - I'm embarrassed to say - because of the name, I always thought he was one of Yellow Kid's Primary Color Gang characters. I found out that is not the case at all. He is actually a well known character in the online game "City of Heroes". I read his profile on that board and discovered he is a "Technology" hero - as opposed to Science, Magic, or Mutant - which means he utilizes tech as opposed to having innate powers. The symbol here is the COH symbol for Technology used during character creation.

For Eryk, I wanted something special. Apart from the board owners and LMB founders, which I did first, the remainder of these that I've done haven't followed any order other than whatever struck me at the time. But, given Eryk's prominence on LW, I wanted to give him a place of honor. Originally, I was going to have him be the last one I did, but I then I thought the 100th would be a really nice milestone. Besides, I was just dying to give this a try. The layout is an Interlac "E" formed by the infamous Nelly Cap left carelessly against a Greek column (from Calamity King's first appearance, natch). I had this design in mind from the beginning but really didn't think I would be able to execute it. I'm pleased to say though... I think it looks bitchin'. [Smile]

Jerry is a different story altogether. Though I often see Jerry about the board, I don't "know" him in the sense of a "character". For the purpose of this project, his name choice isn't particularly evocative for me, either. That being said, however, whenever I think of Jerry, I think in terms of the absolute candor with which he has spoken about his real life on this board. In particular, there was a story he told about his life with his partner that moved me a great deal and provided the inspiration for this symbol. At first I was afraid to approach it from a "personal" standpoint, but I spoke with Jerry behind the scenes and he encouraged me to do so, even providing me with additional elements that he wanted me to try to convey. I made sure that he saw this before I posted it and, I'm really happy that he liked it so much.

For Candle's first symbol, I used the comedy and tragedy faces that characterized her LMB character at the very beginning (over 10 years ago). She reached out to me, though, and, although she enjoyed it, she felt that she had grown since those early days, and thought she would like something to reflect that growth. I worked with her behind the scenes to find a design that captured her strong faith. It was a happy coincidence that the Celtic Cross design I found contained embellishment on the bars that was evocative (to me at least) of the earlier symbol, as well. Thanks, Candle, for both your patience and encouragement.

So...whew... do I ever shut up?

OK... briefly.

Up next: I'm taking a break from these for the weekend, but... come Monday... back in the swing.

hmmm I love Candlelight's one the best. the others nice nice....except EDE's, to be honest with you, did not work well to me...I was expecting something like Anvil dropping on head or a broken horseshoe or shattered rabbit's leg...something that represent luck....black cat? hmmm columns broken kind of did not work on me. I dont know...that s ONE that bothers me the most....the rest of them wow....awesome...beautiful....ironically you picked EDE as the 100th and I happen to be the one who disagrees. :\

Candlelight - awesome - one of the best alongside Teeds....

Kid Q - heh...a perfect sidekick to the Q. Nice!

Jerry - not familar with him - two hands with a plant...nice something different. I like it.

Ferro Kid - I sure wish that we have another Ferro in the Legion. This one will do.

Blue Battler - Yes!! it works....as i remember seeing that one in the City of Heroes. the gears work perfectly.

EDE - oh...a disaster waiting to happen? *gulp*

I mean NO offense to both EDE and you...just that I am blunt and honest. I think it is difficult to do EDE's one...very difficult I imagine.

I was about to agree with Candlelight that my favorite was also Thriftshop Debutante's, but then Candlelight's own symbol came out.

After seeing the description I realize what TD's is, but at first I thought it was a beautifully stylized bird.

I wonder if a terribly tedious but much appreciated favor might be asked? When you're done, can the final group shot include names?

Also, mind if I use a modified Lightning Lad symbol elsewhere? I changed the bolt's color to blue, for another name by which I've been known.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Thanks for the comments, guys, but I want to make sure I don't misrepresent my contribution to the Candle one. It's actually an existing Celtic Cross design that I just slightly tweaked to fit better with this format. Candle and I went back and forth with a few different designs, but this was the one she liked best.

Sorry you didn't like the EDE one, Supes. I see what you are saying about there being more direct choices to represent a "jinx", but I was trying to make it a bit more LW specific: [Calamity King] If the overall consensus is that it didn't make the grade, though, I'll gladly give it another try.

To Shining Son: Yeah... I'm pretty sure that you don't need my blessing to use a lightning bolt. [Smile] But to your other point, absolutely... I'll do a Who's Who list with the last group shot. But really, though... are you trying to say that after a couple months of posting you can't symbolically recognize 140 or so online personalities by sight? Man... get with it! [Wink] [LOL]

Hey I did not know that the emoticon on Calamity King changed from the one with Anvil dropping on his head smashing him to the column falling over him....hmmmm oddly..the emoticon works better than the symbol....maybe it s the "C" that really bothers me or its the misplaced hat? well lets see how the consensus says. if they like it then its okay. I'll move on. There are still many symbols that I admire, esp Candle and Teeds. [Smile]

Thanks, Ex - I'm a fan forever. Mine is, of course, very special and I appreciate the spirit and tact with which you approached it.

The other new additions are great. I'm definitely a fan of the crumbling column for EDE - it evokes one of the greatest moments ever in LSH tryout history.

I like Eryk's, too, though it doesn't look like an E to me. (More like a C?) Anyway, it's clearly a column that's falling apart, and the nelly cap is a nice touch.

Great job on all of these, Ex. Your creativity amazes me.

Cool, the vote has been cast - the column stays.

That being said, though, given the couple of comments saying that the overall design more resembled a "C" than an Interlac "E", I went back and did a compare and you guys are absolutely right:

 -

It looks like I overestimated the cap placement to invoke the "bulb" of the E. Not bad for eyeballing, but you're right... the eye "knows" that it's wrong. I think I'll do a revise to bring it in closer (as well as sharpen up a few of the more blurry parts where some detail was lost) to better get what I was going for.

Thanks for all the feedback, everybody!

If you're wondering why I'm posting at 3:30 in the morning... I'm managing a software release for work this weekend, so right now I'm on "Sri Lankan" time. So... how better to spend that dead time between system startup and QA kickoff than to mess around on LW?

So I revisited the EDE one, trying to fix the overall shape to make it look less like a "C," but as I was trying out different positions and scales for the cap, it occured to me that it didn't have to be at the base of the column at all and, in fact, probably shouldn't be. The before and after versions:

BEFORE:
 -

AFTER:
 -

I think this relatively small change actually does quite a bit to improve the design:

- Firstly, it just balances the composition better, filling more of the dead space.

- It makes the design much more dynamic; instead of just being a static component, the cap is now part of the action, moments away from getting crushed.

- By moving it out of the light source, more detail is preserved as the shadows enhance the lines of the cap (I did play around a bit with the center portion of the cap to try to maximize this).

- The suggested shape of the Interlac "E" is now clearer (the cap not being needed at all to create the "bulb," as the columns base accomplishes the same thing).

- In fact, by separating it into two shapes, it could now almost be read as an "E" and a period - a slight nod to the fact that while "Calamity King's" real name is just "E. Davis Ester" it took our Ester to create the name "Eryk".

So, as I say, not much of an overall change, but enough to make quite an improvement. Thanks SuperboyMMDJR and He Who LSHes for your constructive criticism; it really helped.

I like the new design better, too.

One notable difference is in the idea being implied by each design (intended or not). In the first design, the hat seems to be causing the pillar to collapse. In the second design, the hat is about to become a victim.

I like the subtle humor of the latter.

Thanks for the Mystery Lad message board symbol, Exnihil-- it looks great. I have to wonder what you would've come up with for Tsarin, though? I've toyed with returning to that posting ID, now that an Element Lad I can connect with is back in print (barely, unfortunately-- maybe the lack of panel space for Jan is the reason I haven't 'squeezed the trigger').

Yep, the second EDE design does it! The first one I didn't understand at all without the explanation. The second one tells a dynamic story even for newcomers who don't know what it signifies.

Great job on all of these, Ex!

Well, the obvious would be a hunk of Tsarin crystal, I guess. Tsarin's back-story was that he was a Tromian who was left in a near-death state by Roxxas on Trom. When Jan (the 'real' Element Lad) transmuted his 'corpse' into Tsarin crystal, that did something that gradually healed him. I forget the specifics, but he ended up in the LMBP-verse, where he spent lots of time in his lab watching holovids of the exploits of the 'real' LSH (and presumably other dimensional/timeline versions, too). When reboot Jan went insane and killed Monstress and Lightning Lad, Tsarin shattered and has been presumed dead ever since. Mystery Lad has shown up in a few shared stories, I believe, but I didn't write him- so I don't know if his 'mystery' is connected to Tsarin at all.

At one time, I thought about being Tsarin 5, since Tsarin was the scientist guy, but never took that very far.

Ex- finish your 100 (or however many) first- give everyone else the fun of seeing their LMBP persona in message board symbol glory. Then, if you go back and tackle tertiary characters, maybe consider Tsarin.

Wonder no longer... in a bizarre coincidence, the very next wave will center on three LMBers who all start with the letter "T" - one of whom uses the same symbol that I would have used for you had you still gone by "Tsarin". Even odder is the fact that, alphabetically, he will fall in the same place in the group shot.

If ever you do go back to your original handle, I'd be interested in seeing the in-story meeting between you... and Tromium.

As promised, a Triple T this time out with: Tamper Lad, Time Teller Lad, and Tromium:

 -
 -
 -

Tamper Lad is the resident evil genius of Legion World (says so right on his establishment, the Evil Genius Supper Club), though we never actually see him do anything evil. Apparently he has a tacit agreement with the Office of Security to give them pointers on things that evil geniuses might exploit and, in return, they surreptitiously slip him info on exploitable weaknesses of Earth! I envision Tamper Lad as very much a Bond villain, playing Baccarat, stroking a Persian cat, and absolutely sitting in a Blofeld-like swivel chair... perfect for evil reveals. I added the 3-boot Brainy pattern to the buttons in honor of his avatar.

Time Teller Lad is Rockhopper Lad's young protege, Tim Temp. By Rocky's request (many moons ago... sorry for the delay, Rocky), Tim uses an Hourman II inspired symbol as designed for his costume by Sketch Lad, HERE.

I'm afraid I don't actually know Tromium, but, as discussed above, I used a crystalline design in honor of the Tsarins (Tromite memorial markers). Should Mystery Lad ever reveal himself as the long lost LMBer, Tsarin, one could only image there must be some connection between these two (he said... stoking the roleplaying fires.)

Up next: The jaws that bite, the claws that catch, and the... uh... whatever it is that cows do.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Thanks, Ex. It's awesome! Tim's logo (mainly because it really does derive from Todd McFarlane's design for Rick Tyler's original outfit) really does need the Roman "T" rather than and Interlac character as was seen in many others. Besides, Tim's fascination with time makes him very fond of old-fashioned things. [Big Grin]

Thanks so much, Kid Q!

The coolest part of this project for me has been having posters that I've only rarely, if ever, posted with over the years drop by to say "Hi." Folks like yourself, Mystery Lad, Bicycle Repair Man, Invisible Brainiac... it's really been a very cool expansion of my LW experience.

Heck... we even got a visit from Doctor Mayavale (though I'm not quite sure if that's a good thing! [Shudder] )

Posted by Exnihil on :

So, the last couple rounds have some of the trickier ones I've tried to do - EDE, Tamper Lad, and Tromium (the hardest one yet - I just couldn't figure out a good way to do "facets" accurately reflecting light. It still came out pretty good, I think, but it's not entirely accurate. Reading between the lines: if you are holding your breath to see a symbol for your all time favorite character, Gladys the Senient Disco Ball... you've got a looooooooooong wait. [Wink] )

In any case, I though it was time for a bit of a breather round with some more basic designs. Let's take a walk on the wild side, as we go for another all-animal themed round with: Raging Bull, Timber Wolf, and White Raven:

 -
 -
 -

For Raging Bull, I went back to same style I used for Ram Boy, 'lil Rhino, and the original Rockhopper Lad symbol, the sort of "enhanced silhouette" of an animal head. Alphabetically, he actually comes right before Ram Boy, so in the group shots the two differently shaped horned heads will look really nice together.

Timber Wolf is a direct LSH lift, the more modern logo as opposed to the earlier one used by Lone Wolf Legionnaire. TW on Legion World is not the same character as the LSH TW, but rather Dev-Em's shape changing brother, Lon. He has most recently been primarily in his humanoid form, but was long seen in his more feral shape as "Furball".

White Raven is another poster that I've never "met," but I am a very big fan of the Micro-Heroes she's made for the LMB characters. The logo used here is not my design, but rather one that was designed by Monkey Eater Lad for a White Raven photomanipulation that she really liked.

Next up: Shall... we... play... a... game?

Posted by Exnihil on :

Don't hate the player, hate the game. Aw, heck... don't hate the game either. These next three Legion Worlders certainly don't... as it's time to meet three folks who I encounter on Legion World most often in the Spaceopoly forum: Kenaustin, Korbal, and Xben:

 -
 -
 -

Korbal, a fellow that I never want to go up against in a high-stakes Legion trivia contest, takes his name from the Lightning Planet where the Ranzzes got zapped. I didn't want to use an image of the Lightning Beasts - because, quite frankly, they're pretty goofy looking - so instead I went a bit more suggestive, using a globe that encloses electricity, one of those plasma lightning balls that you see in Spenser's. I usually give these symbols a once over with the Blur tool to smooth them out to look more like a plaque, but I intentionally skipped that on the electricity component here to try to make the arcs look a bit more raw. As a nice coincidence, I think the center rod portion also sort of suggests the Duralim wand that brought Lighning Lad back to life.

Xben, in real life, is a missionary, so I started his symbol as the Chi-Rho symbol (as the Chi portion would nicely suggest the "X" of his name) but then, afterward, I read the origin of his name. Apparently, it was a college in-joke where "Xben" was a superhero with the mutant ability to teleport grains of sand into the eyes of opponents. That would totally be a handy thing to have in a fight! So I combined the two ideas, replacing the top of the "Rho" with a nicely concentric eye which resembles a target.

Kenaustin (short for ak-Haru Kenaustin Ardenol, from the Thomas Covenant fantasy books) is actually my longest-term message board buddy. We "met" on my very first day on the DCMBs and, when I started getting frustrated with their moderation and lack of community, it was Ken that said, "You know... I think I know a place where you'd be much happier." He was totally right. [Smile] Over the years, I've run several large scale internet games, and Ken has been a participant in every one of them. But lest I give the impression that he only enjoys playing games, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Ken also designed a totally cool Legion/Magic the Gathering hybrid, for which his symbol here is a reference. Ken's work can be found HERE

Next up: It seems like I just did a group shot, but I've actually posted 21 new symbols since then! We're up to 112, so I'm going to do a few touch-ups, then a group shot, then wrap up with the final 30 or so.

In addition to all the new ones, I also made the following changes:

My original idea for yours was a sort of detective-y thing with a magnifying glass over a set of footprints, but when I started putting together the one for Matlock, I saw how dull the the logo for the "Matlock" TV show was, so I co-opted the glass premise for his. That left me with just the footprints for yours, but that seemed a bit too on-the-nose. The next logical step was the compass, and I'm glad I went that direction, because I think the "Dawnstar" connection worked out really well.

Tonight, I was going to try to do the great loves of Cobalt Kid.

Wait... that didn't sound right... I was going to try to tackle them.

Nope... even worse.

Suffice it to say... Cobie's gals were supposed to be tonight's theme. But somewhere between work and home, the martini bar distracted me, and now I really don't think I'm in the right state of mind to be drawing up things for girls that have "Tart" and "Jailbait" in their names, so I think they'll have to wait for the weekend.

By way of consolation, though, I realized that I posted a new logo for Jim Gallagher last night without giving it the larger display that I had done for earlier full revisions such as Nightcrawler and Future King, so... because I don't have any new ones prepped, let's rectify that now.

Before:
 -

After:
 -

Each goes with the sculpture idea - with a block, a hammer, and a chisel coming together to form the vague shape of a "G" - but the latter one takes the first basic pass and refines it with the block now actually being carved into an Interlac "G," as well as the hammer and chisel being closer in shape to actual sculpting tools as opposed to just things you find in a toolbox. I could probably make it better by shifting the hammer and chisel a little to the right, and by making less of a sharp separation between the carved and uncarved bits of the block, but I think, for now, it'll do. Probably in the final group shot, I'll touch it up again.

Now it's time to look at a few of the many gals who have been... um... "mentored"... by our own Cobalt Kid. Let's meet his two wives, and his great love: High Priestess Viviane, Jailbait Lass, and Space Tart:

 -
 -
 -

Although I'm sure her Facebook status reads "It's Complicated", it seems clear to me that Lolita (AKA Jailbait Lass) and Cobie are destined to find true love. Her logo here is a pair of handcuffs opened at the bottom to suggest a "J" and an "L". I also tried to angle the base of the cuffs at the same angle as the earlier logos of Everyday Girl and My Whee Fem, to show the affinity between that trio.

Although Viviane appears to have vanished along with all her Avalonian sisters, her role in LMB in history, particularly the events around he marriage to Cobalt (his second time at the altar) are far too important not to include her in this project. Her logo here is the crown, and lunar forehead tattoo, from an earlier design by Kid Marvel (itself drawn from the source character from The Mists of Avalon as portrayed by Angelica Huston)

For Cobie's first wife, Space Tart, I tried a wide variety of designs, but kept wavering on their "family-friendly" nature. Eventually, I decided to keep it a bit classier, with a sexy pair of legs in stiletto heels, kicked up to suggest a "T". The other, earlier designs, I moved to my private files for later use I just deleted.

Awww... g'wan Rhino, you're making me blush. [Smile]

So, our next two additions are two intergalactic lawmen who served on opposite sides of the fence: Lonestar Ranger and Space Ranger.

 -
 -

The integalactic lawman, Space Ranger, is the adopted brother of Abin Quank, and about as true blue as they come, fighting a never ending battle for Truth and Justice. Lonestar Ranger, on the other hand, although he served in the same enforement capacity - but on the side of longtime LMB enemies The Dark Oval - was an opportunist type who ultimately met his end at the hands of Frio (though he has gotten slightly better since... reanimated as a zombie).

For each of their symbols I used the same source - the 1950's televison show, "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger". Even apart from the name, I thought the retro-futuristic style would be perfect for this pair.

Space Ranger's logo is a minimalistic take on the insignia that the TV Rangers wore on their hats (in the TV version they threw everything in but the kitchen sink: a rocket ship, in front of a planet, with rings, over which wings were attached, upon which the words "Space Ranger" were emblazoned - sheesh!) Here I boiled it down, reducing the scale of the planet, making the ring concentric (to keep it unique from Saturn Girl's logo), and increasing both the scale and level of detail of the rocketship.

For Lonestar Ranger, I went with a modified version of the TV Rangers chest logo, which was a moon through which a triangle had been described. Looking at it, it occured to me that eliminating the right bar of the triangle would create an "L", perfect for the Lonestars. It's not an Interlac "L", true, but who says they use Interlac in Dark Oval space? Additionally, I scaled down the moon to be the same size as the planet in the Space Ranger symbol, to suggest two sides of the same coin.

Stop rolling on the floor, it's time to meet three more Legion Worlders, one beginning with an L, one beginning with an O, and... well... OK, two beginning with an L:

l.e.g.i.o.n.JOHN, Loser Lad, and Omni Craig:

 -
 -
 -

Contrary to John's name, his character has nothing to do with the 21st century cohorts of Vril Dox. The "l.e.g.i.o.n." instead refers to his ability to create independent replicates of himself (ala Duplicate Damsel). Nevertheless, I'm further obfuscating the matter here by using the L.E.G.I.O.N. symbol as his base, replacing the fist with the Interlac J (which is annoyingly asymmetrical to work with, so I reshaped it a bit to balance it.) I know that's sort of counterintuitive, but I thought the shape itself actually was suggestive of his powers, with the letter branching off in different directions.

Loser Lad is pretty straight forward. He taps into his "Loser Power" to sap his opponents' confidence, motivation and luck. He uses the finger and thumb on the forehead in his avatar, but the original drawing (by Freekinos) actually has the hand sign reversed - which I think is far funnier - so that's what I did a version of here.

When I researched OmniCraig, it said that he took his name from the fact that he has a large ego - i.e. "All-Craig". That's not really a concept that translates well symbolically, so I tried to approach it sideways... something that is both self-referential and infinite. I experimented a bit with some recursive shapes, like Mobius bands or the "Infinite" symbol, but the variation in depth on a single level required additional shading beyond that which occurs in the beveling and embossing. Since I didn't do that for any of the others I thought that would be "cheating" if I used it for Craig's. So I wound up going with a more 2-D version of that same concept and using a spiral. After I did it, I was like, "Hey... that looks like a bunch of C's coming together to make an O, nice coincidence."

I see London, I see France, I see a place folks can really dance. Grab your passport, because it's time to pay a visit to our international LMBers: Faraway Lad, Paris Cub, and Ricardo:

 -
 -
 -

Faraway is, of course, the LMB ambassador to the Court of St. James and those other, lesser, faraway places. For his symbol, I used a stylized version of UK coat of arms with, as they say, the lion and the unicorn fighting for the crown (dropping the center garter portion, which I had earlier used for Malvolio... hmmm... might be a story there). Their never ending battle takes place atop an Interlac "F".

I had the idea for Paris Cub for a while, but was looking for the right grouping to add him in. When I was looking for Kid Marvel's drawing of High Priestess Viviane a couple waves back, though, I ran across KM's Paris Cub drawing... same idea! I don't know whether I saw it a while ago and it just stuck with me subliminally... or if the idea of a bear in a beret is just too damn cute to pass up... but there you have it.

I don't run into Ricardo that often (he posts mostly about the Legion comics, which I seldom do) but I do know that he's from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I used the center portion of the Brazilian flag for his logo, and I think it came out really nice. That arc gives a nice 3-D quality. The only drawback is that one of the constellations in it, the Southern Cross, I used earlier for Karie, so now that's superseded. I might have to go back and do a different one for Karie.

I love the Faraway Lad fighting lion and unicorn design!
Those are complicated images, but they're crystal clear.

The only thing that I see might need a highlight is the horn on the unicorn, since they're magical and said in some stories, to glow on their own.
Just a thought.

I see what you mean, Shady, that should be an easy touch up. I'll give it a go when I do the last group shot.

So, a couple of months after I started posting to Legion World, I staged a big game over in Spaceopoly called, Survivor: Marzal. At the time, hardly anyone knew me here, so - since they didn't know what they were getting into - I was able to dupe... er, convince... twelve posters to spend an entire month losing their minds.

Out of those twelve posters, nine are still active and had their symbols featured earlier, but the other three I haven't seen on LW much since. But, since they took a gamble on me when I was still making my bones, I'd be remiss if I didn't pay tribute to the other three Survivors:

Floating Foxlike Creature, Gamara, and Language Arts Lad (now Language Arts Dave):

 -
 -
 -

For Foxy, I used a modified version of a T-shirt design I came across. I scaled him down a bit smaller than other symbols I've done, because, as a foxlike creature, he was just a little guy. Originally, I made the base of his tail a bit more evocative of an up arrow to indicate the "floating" part, but it wound up looking a bit too "taxidermic" and kind of skeeved me out a bit.

Gamara is pretty simple, a spiny turtle shell, after his namesake, the giant Japanese monster, Gamera. To get the armored effect, I used a few more layers than normal. Looking at this one, along with quite a few from the last 10 or so waves, I'm realizing that I've slowly gotten away from my initial intent of trying to keep these as simple as possible. Quite a few of the ones I've done over the past couple of weeks would actually be very impractical as actual monitor symbols, but... eh... whattya gonna do?

For L.A.D., I went the Rickshaw route of having an entirely Interlac symbol, in this case the IPA pronunciation for "Dave": ['deIv], as a reference to his "Language Arts" moniker. I just thank my stars that "Dave" has a fairly standard pronunciation, because I really didn't want to try to figure out the Interlac way of expressing "dental frictives" and "velar nasals" [Smile]

Great Thread EX! I wish I'd seen it before yesterday! I absolutely love the Quank Family symbols you've done so far and I can't wait to see what you come up with for Abin, Pagan Lass, Stoopid Cat, and Gary Concord.

One suggestion, Abin's symbol should comine a Power Ring with a Trash Can. He is after all the the Legion World Janitor...

Thanks, Abin!

Your suggestion is not exactly the design I had for Abin... but very much on the right track. I should be posting that one by the end of next week and I think you'll be really pleased. Let me know what you think and, if after seeing it, you'd still like the trash can, I can do another, no problem.

Of the others, I was going to do one for Pagan Lass and Stoopid Cat, but was actually going to skip Gary Concord (because I don't quite understand his story). If you have time, though, could you pop over to THIS THREAD and clue me in?

So, today we have two LMBers whose symbols will, no doubt, be showing up shortly in the Legion World tattoo parlor:

Helena Handbasket and Hrun the Barbarian

 -
 -

Helena is a former soldier of the Dark Oval who defected to the side of the LMB (losing an arm in the process). Her symbol here is a pretty literal translation, a handbasket on a pitchfork. The circle of flames I added after the fact because the center portion seemed a bit thin for the space it was in, and hey... a circle is a type of oval, right?

Hrun the Barbarian is the battle-hungry papa of Everyday Girl. For his symbol, I was originally going to use a double bladed axe (ala Conan), but again, went the route of better filling the space with two axes crossed. I experimented a bit with a shield in the middle, but as Barbarian shields are more rounded than sharp curved, it wound up looking a little too blocky and substantial. Besides... Hrun don't need no stinkin' shield!

OK, playing catchup with a couple quick ones that I accidentally missed in previous waves. Two more lovely ladies join the ranks as we meet Mechana and Nova Girl:

 -
 -

Though quite a few comic professionals pop onto our board, I think only Mechana (AKA colorist Ronda Pattison), by virtue of her posting frequency and her joining in on the big LMB meetup in 2008, has joined the ranks as an "official" LMBer. Though she uses the Futurama character, Bender, as her avatar, I felt that an Atomic Robo symbol would be more fitting, given her fantastic work on that book over the years.

I'm not that familiar with Nova Girl, but I do know that she was serving as co-deputy leader of the LMB when I first joined up. As her avatar logo is quite similar to the compass rose that I used earlier for Legion Tracker, I tried to differentiate her symbol, by opting for a take on the helmet symbol used by the female version of the Marvel character, Nova.

Since it's a bit slim this time out, I also want to add a bonus symbol - a "Take 2" for the earlier one I did for Karie. The first time out I just used a Southern Cross to symbolize her New Zealand origins, but - as I mentioned a few posts back - I felt this had been superseded by the one for Ricardo, which was inclusive of that constellation. But, then, someone reminded me that there was a more important constellation to Karie, her zodiac sign of Scorpio, so much so that she recently got it tattooed. Say no more... Karie, take 2:

Bit of a potpourri this time out, as I'm nearing the end of the "Summer of Symbols" and unifying themes are running a bit thin. Tonight, we're all over the map with two from the top 100, and two more from below, as we meet:

Leap Lear Lord, Senor Widebottom, Sir Roy, and 235 Andy S:

 -
 -
 -
 -

For Leap Year Lord (Formerly Leap Year Lass - but that's an anagram of "Slay Laser Ape" and I'm sure no one wants that!) I was at a bit of a loss, so went with a pretty literal take - a leap over a calendar passing the 29th. If that leaper looks eerily familiar, don't worry about it, I'm sure a nice FTD pick-me-up bouquet will help that feeling pass. [Wink]

The natural symbol for Senor Widebottom would have been, of course, his trademark pair of comically oversized pantaloons, but I couldn't get that image to be evocative enough without some sort of pattern on the pants (and I'm not actually that adept enough in Photoshop to pull it off). So, instead, I tried a few different elements of "clown" paraphernalia - a seltzer bottle, balloon animals - before setting on the bike horn to tie it nicely into the fact that he's part of the lil' Rhino family of characters.

Sir Roy was formerly part of the Knights of Legion World until he recently met his end valiantly during a fight with the Red Bee. For Roy I went with a sort of heraldic shield with an Interlac "R" balanced out by a fleur de lis to suggest his nobility.

I don't know Andy S at all (he stopped posting long before I arrived here) and unfortunately there is not much in either his name or the posts he made to suggest anything to me beyond a pretty literal translation. I did find an old photomanip by Monkey Eater Lad, though, which suggested that Andy was a Karate Kid fan, so I went with a yin yang symbol inverted to form an "S," with the "235" - for which I don't know the significance - in Interlac below.

Actually, the "R" on Sir Roy's emblem has a double meaning. In addition to Roy, it also can represent that he was knighted by Rockhopper Lad in his position as heir to the throne of the Pyngwyn Colonies--Roy had previously been the Royal Inquisitor. The "R" also represents his patron, Rockhopper Lad.

It's time to pay another visit to the Family Quank as we meet:

Gary Concord and Stoopid Cat:

 -
 -

As I noted on the last page, I wasn't that familiar with Gary's story, but Abin was kind enough to fill me in. Gary Concord is actually a parallel world version of Cobalt Kid whose version of the LMB has been destroyed by that world's version of Nightcrawler (called the Day Walker). This world is separated from Legion World by a realm called the Banned 'Em Zone, the gate to which is accessible via a system of tesseracts. A couple years back, Gary made the decision to remain in the Banned 'Em Zone to perpetually defend this gate against the Day Walker's assault. He remains there today. The symbol I chose for Gary works, I think, on several levels. As a tesseract, primarily it reflects Gary's current fate. At the same time, however, it also acts as a counterpoint to Cobie's own symbol - the outward projected rings. Cobie's is round - Gary's is straight; Cobie's is projecting outward, Gary's inward. I think the two are a very good reflection of one another.

Stoopid Cat was the former familiar of the late mage Pagan Lass. I'm not entirely familiar with SC, but I do know that he, along with Pagan Lass and STU, originated in Pre-Egyptian times and is extremely long lived. At one point, Stoopid Cat actually rose to the ranks of LMB deputy co-leader! For his symbol, I had no hesitation... it had to be the Cheshire Cat. This is to reflect the fact that he is, certainly, in reality, far from "stupid", but more likely operating on a level of logic foreign to most that he interacts with, but also, and more importantly, to reflect his strong connection to a woman named Alice.

OK, back from story writing hiatus.

As I mentioned in the hint before the break, it's time to see the DOC...

That is to say, three LMBers beginning respectively with D, O, and C (What? Were you expecting someone else? [Wink] :

Double Chinner, Outdoor Miner, and Clive (AKA Virgin Lad)

 -
 -
 -

Let me tell you... I had a dickens of a time with Double Chinner. I probably tried more designs with his than with anyone else's. Even though he uses a Bouncing Boy avatar, I really didn't want to go with a fat joke. I tried of doing a variation on Double-Header; using an image of the Roman God Janus; using one of those optical illusions where you see one face, then a different one; using a sort of Picasso thing where half a face is facing forward overlapped by another in profile. Then one night, I was drinking wine with my wife and she said "cin cin" to toast - which is pronounced, "chin chin" - and I thought, "Hmmm... haven't tried that." So, basically, what you are looking at here is a figure/ground illusion where the stem of each glass has two faces coming together at the chin, then the glasses themselves are toasting as a reference to "cin cin". I guess technically that's six chins altogether... but, seriously... I ain't doing this one again! [LOL]

"Outdoor Miner" is apparently a song by the band Wire about serpentine leaf miners - these larva that burrow though leaves, creating these totally cool maze like patterns (do a search... it's pretty cool). Though I don't know for certain, I can only imagine this reference was very much intended by our Outdoor Miner, as that basically is what his avatar Gates is - a bug that burrows through space. His symbol here is pretty straight forward, one of those serpentine mazes made atop an Interlac O.

Virgin Lad was "Clive"... a Lardbot who achieved his own independent sentience and resided on Legion World for a while. He was the co-deputy leader of the LMB when I first joined here and was the head of the Legion World Department of Moral Purity. He met his end during the LMB case called "The Thyme Crime". His symbol here is a variation on the standard "Man" symbol that I earlier used for Arm Fall Off Boy and Arms Fall Off Boy, but obviously tweaked such that Clive can protect his... um... honor.

Up next: Oh, all right... since this time the DOC was in... next time the DOC is out... waaaaaaaaay out.

It's time to meet a few members of the LMB leadership ranks from bygone days, as up next are the symbols for:

The Crusader, Freekinos, Grey Birdboy, Omega Man, and Seahorse:

 -
 -
 -
 -
 -

As mentioned above, Crusader is Spellbinder's twin, Mykel Jectra of Psyonia, who was the LMB Year 2 Deputy under Loser Lad, only to be elected leader himself the following term. The next leader, at the beginning of Year 3, was Seahorse (formerly BellBookCandle). Both of the above symbols were designed by Cru, though they've been touched up a bit for this format.

Our other three past leaders each served as deputies during Year 4. First Omega Man (who was later turned into France by Turns-You-Into-A-Country-Fred!), then Grey Birdboy (a Starhavenite who still soars on the starwinds; a more passionate pteraphile you are not likely to meet), and finally, Freekinos (a warrior/artist who, along with Sketch Lad and Kid Marvel, produced some of the most enduring LMB portraits ever). Omega Man's is a fairly self evident symbol, following an earlier Greek symbol I used for Harbinger; Grey's is a combination of a nice wing design I found, along with his character's headband starburst, and Freekinos (sometimes Freek'd Kid), following an earlier design by Kid Marvel, uses an Interlac-ed version of the logo for the cartoon character, Freakazoid.

While this project has focused mostly on the fictional aspects of the folks who have have been a part of the LMB, there have been a few times when that line has been blended, with aspects of real life creeping in. For this and the next wave, that real life aspect will be all too apparent, as we take a look at a few friends who have unfortunately passed on.

I debated on how inclusive I should make this section, initially deciding that I would feature just the three individuals who were most associated with the LMB aspect of the various boards where this group has resided. The more I thought about it, however, I decided that I would expand that selection to one other character (which will be included in the next wave) who - although he was an alt - was one of the more fully realized characters in the LMB story.

For this wave, however, I'd like to pay my respects to:

Looks That Kill Lad and Pagan Lass:

 -
 -

Looks That Kill Lad was early member of the LMB who, unfortunately, I never got to "meet" online. Reading what others have written about him, however, I realized how deeply his loss to the community was felt. In his memorial thread, I read that his favorite book was "Lord of the Rings", a passage from which was read during his memorial. Accordingly, I was going to use a take on the "Eye of Sauron" for his symbol here, but thought it more appropriate to go with the more hopeful "Eye of Providence" seen in so many symbols to signify the aspect of watching over new endeavors.

Pagan Lass is, of course, the late wife of Abin Quank. Though she, herself, didn't often post on LW, leaving the story of her adventures in the capable hands of her husband, Abin has written in the past how much our fictional world delighted and amused her. For her symbol here, I've combined the traditional female symbol with two pagan symbols - the triple phased moon representing the aspects of the goddess and the pentacle, representing the balance of the five elements.

Beautiful stuff Ex.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Of all the people that I've gotten to know on this board over the last three years, there is none that I've become acquainted with as poignantly as I have with the Yellow Kid.

I had seen him posting, both in his primary ID and in his alt, the Gay Green Giant, for about six months or so after I joined before really "meeting" him, but when I did so, in the midst of an LMB roleplay, I was just astounded at how creative he was... just a fount of remarkable ideas.

We worked fairly closely together throughout that roleplay, bouncing ideas back and forth. Sadly, however, it would be the last time I would have that opportunity... as he died in an accident just a few short months later.

That being said, since YK left us, I've probably become more familiar with his writing than I have with anyone else's... acting as a proxy to preserve the characters he created for the LMB wiki. I've written, I believe, about 15 or so articles for YK's characters and, in doing so, have come to such an appreciation for what a true talent was lost when Art passed.

So, in his memory, I wanted to create a symbol for at least the two main characters (of the many) in the Primary Color Gang:

The Gay Green Giant and The Yellow Kid:

 -
 -

For YK himself, I used the silhouette of his inspiration, the original comic character, Richard F. Outcault's "The Yellow Kid". The intersecting circles springing from his mind are a color wheel representing the Red, Blue and Green components of YK's group, The Primary Color Gang. Beginning their careers initially as adversaries to the LMB, they very quickly became tight allies, fighting alongside them to the end. Though the Red and Blue components rotated through a wide number of characters throughout the years, the Green remained constant - Bob, The Gay Green Giant (sometimes called Triple G or just 3G).

That a character existed in the LMB universe that was a gay, green-skinned, drag queen who could grow to 100 feet tall is not remarkable in itself. That Bob should also be both an incredibly competent and sympathetic character... and merely have those traits be aspects of his character and not the full definition... and be completely accepted (and enjoyed) in a community that spans a wide variety of lifestyles... and be written by a someone who was straight... makes him, in my opinion, nothing short of a great character. There are a great number of professional writers who I feel could take a page or two from YK's book. For the design I used the transgender symbol, increased in scale to represent the "giant" aspect, enclosing a lip-sticked kiss.

Up next:

Well... for me, at least, it has really been the "Summer of Symbols". Over the past two months I've posted 149 "official" symbols, as well as several earlier versions of ones that were still evolving. All that's left to do... before I finish off with an even 150 and call it a wrap... is to stack up the chairs and sweep the place up.

If only there were an LMBer I could call to help me out with that...

Thanks, guys!

I swear I have one more in the hopper (as well as the final group shot), but I haven't had a lot of time this week to finish it up. This weekend, though (I actually set myself a deadline to wrap up this project before summer ended, looks like I'm taking that down to the wire. [Smile] )

Drumroll.... aaaaaaaaaaand.... LMB Symbol #150!

For ketchup drip or coleslaw drop...
For carelessly spilled soda pop...
Let those who leave behind their slop...
Beware the power... of Abin's Mop!

 -

Abin Quank, apart from being the Green Lantern ring-wielding patriarch of the ever-expanding Quank Clan, is, of course, also the Legion World janitor. I like to imagine the moment when he was given the ring, being told, "With this ring, your willpower can accomplish anything your mind can imagine," and then Abin thinking, "Yes! Finally I can get those stubborn scuffs off the HQ floor!"

For his symbol, I wanted to combine these two seemingly disparate ideas, when it occurred to me that someone who didn't give up his janitorial duties simply because he was granted supreme power would, of course, put the power battery to practical use... promptly fashioning it into a more appropriate tool of his trade. I'm not sure if it shows up at this scale, but the little "caution" symbol on the side of the bucket is also a GL logo.

Next up:

It's the fiiiiiinal Group Shot! Da-da, dum, dum... da-da, dum, dum, dum...

Ahem... sorry... Europe flashback there... but, yes: it's time to put all the pretty pictures in a row and bid farewell to this project... stay tuned...

[Cool]

Now you can do montage works of each individual poster. Put their symbol at the center and surround it with all their classic one-liners, catchphrases, artworks, etc.

Oh, and make them dance.

And each one needs a musical theme. About forty-five seconds should do it.

If you start today, you can probably have everything all done by next June.

The recent return of a couple long absent LMBers (Rokk Steady and Kid Chaos) inspired me to briefly revisit this project for a few additions, both to pick up a few I missed last time out, and to celebrate a few others who have earned some prominence on LW over the past six months or so.

So up first, the two posters who, upon seeing their names pop up, caused me to bust out the old logo template, Kid Chaos and Rokk Steady:

 -
 -

For Kid C, I used a variant on the Symbol of Chaos designed by Michael Moorcock. The symbol was an eight arrow radial symbol signifying, I'm assuming, all the directions. The symmetry of that symbol though, sort of belies its "chaotic" intent, so I dropped out one of the arrows, causing a dual effect of creating a "C" for the base, and creating an optical illusion where the whole thing now seems slightly off center.

For Rokk, I wanted to incorporate the "disc" motif on Cosmic boy's uniform, while, at the same time indicating steadiness. I went with a sort of heart monitor pattern enclosed by two of the discs. It's a bit thinner than most of the other symbols I've done, but I dig the way it sort of evokes the old Giffen designs (kind of like the Bouncing Boy symbol).

Posted by Exnihil on :

Thanks so much, Future. I've always enjoyed doing these. Who knows... if I keep getting the bug every so often, I might wind up doing all 1589 members! [Smile]

So, up next, two members of the LMB's "lower case auxilliary":

googoomuck and razsolo

 -
 -

Since my posting paths don't always cross with all the members that I do these for, I sometimes have to do a little poking into the links they put into their profiles, or take a look at the other spots on the web that they haunt to get some ideas. That is the case with the next two.

Googoomuck maintains a home page that is a tribute to old combat games from the 70's and 80's, in addition to linking to an online version of one of my old childhood favorites, Stratego. For his symbol, I used a variant on the Stratego bomb game piece, converting the housing into an Interlac "G". (While I always thought that the "Spy" was actually the coolest piece in Stratego, far be it from me to use that and accidentally imply that googoomuck might be an LMB double-agent [Wink] )

And speaking of stealthy folks - once I started taking a look at razsolo's creative works - I was like, "Wow, how did this fellow fly below my radar for so long?" Very creatively diverse, Raz not only writes some phenomenal Legion fan fiction, but has also created his own web comic, and has done hundreds of hilarious T-shirt designs (including the ones for Legion bit players Hate Face and Dr. Zan Orbal). Rather than reinvent the wheel for Raz, the symbol I used here is one of his own design, a cute little fellow called the "Kawaii Satan".

Four down... six more to go...

Some of these symbols wind up being fairly easy to do (there is either an established character, a clear interest, or a fairly obvious association to the name). For others, the concepts in the user names are a bit more abstract, and require a sort of symbolic leap to make the association.

For the next two, we've got one of each, with Owl Lad and Mediocre Boy:

 -
 -

Owl Lad is very straight forward... it's an owl.

You want more? Sigh... fine... [Smile] I didn't want to do a straight Night Girl lift because that would be too easy, (and besides, what if there winds up being a poster named Night Girl later on?) So I sort of went a more stylized route. I have to admit, I always really like doing animal themed symbols - StuRat, Ram Boy, lil Rhino - I don't know... maybe it's because animals are some of the first things you start drawing when you're a little kid, but for some reason they make me happy.

For Mediocre Boy, I actually went through a couple iterations of a different design before deciding that less was more. First off, I want to make sure that everyone realizes this symbol is just tongue in cheek (for all I know MB might be the world's biggest over-achiever - but he did choose that screenname). Anyway, I tried to think what could capture the concept of "Mediocrity".

I did a couple of versions of the old "Participant" ribbon that you used to get in school during field day if you were a complete boob (I got plenty - trust me!) but, at this scale, trying to spell that out in Interlac just looked like little brown dots. Finally I saw online a picture of one of those "Demotivator" posters especially for Mediocrity... a high jump bar set super low. Genius! So, although I did do my own version of the graphic, the idea is totally stolen. Talk about mediocrity! [Smile]

OK... down to the final four of the ten new additions to the LMB logo collection, so I'm going to give each one of these their own post.

First up, we've got a fellow who, right from the start, began to blend seamlessly into the Legion World community - such that when he noted that he had reached 100 posts I was actually really surprised, having thought that he had been around for far longer...

Shining Son

 -

For Shiney's symbol, obviously the main bit is just a literal take on a shining sun but, then, it hangs as a pendulum from the genogram symbols for father and mother, indicating that he is the "son" of... wait... you don't know whose son he is?

We had a whole thread about it: HERE, where it was revealed that his father is actually... no... I'll let you do the leg work yourself.

Fine... if you need another hint, I will tell you that, according to some recent developments elsewhere - given who Shiney's dad is - that would make fellow LMB member, Karie, his adopted sister.

And they say Legion World isn't family friendly!

When the hell did that happen? The sister part, and does this mean that the person in question is going to be a dark lord sometime soon?

Posted by Exnihil on :

Arrgh, Dev... making me provide citations... O.K., wait one sec...

Here we are...

On a planet called "Facebook"... hmm, odd name for a planet... anyway... on March 21st of this year, at the off-world home of the person in question, the adoption of the LMB member Karie was fast-tracked, and she officially became his daughter and - by extension - Shining Son's sister.

If I see it on the web... it's canon! [Smile]

About the whole "dark lord" thing... I pretty much assume that about any Legion Worlder that's been around for more than a year or so.

Good point.

I see the evidence now. Interesting.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Up next, the eighth of ten new symbols, and the most recently registered addition to the symbol ranks (only two left until a newly symmetrical group shot... I'm so excited... [Smile] ).

Normally, I'd wait a bit a little longer to see if a newbie is going to hang around a bit before taking a gamble on adding one of these but, given who vouched for him (and the fact that he already has his own LMB wiki article) I feel fairly confident that we'll be seeing quite a bit of:

Blaze

 -

Blaze is, of course, the main squeeze of trusted LMB member, Invisible Brainiac, and the inheritor of the gifts of the "Order of the Sacred Fire". While not a full fledged LMB member yet - he is still honing his potentially deadly abilities under Ibby's tutelage - I have a good feeling that, before too long, he'll be proudly serving alongside us on missions.

Blaze's symbol is fairly straightforward, an Interlac "B" surrounded by a ring of fire, but it is worth noting that I used the same scaling on the letter as I did for that of the earlier Invisible Brainiac one, tying them together as a matched pair.

Awesome... so glad you dug it, Shiney! Welcome to the club!

Up next, that marvelous gal who always gives a little something extra to Legion World, and whose very name is a sentiment often expressed by quite a few LMBers:

Anita Cocktail

 -

For Anita, I wanted a logo that expressed her over the top personality, while still paying tribute to her "tavernesque" nature.

I started thinking about the old Kids in the Hall routine about the "Girl-Drink Drunk". ("Can I get you a drink, Ray?" "Sure, I'll have a Squashed Strawberry Alleycat." "I'm... uh... I'm not sure I know that one.")

While the cocktail in Anita's symbol reaches nowhere near the heights of the drinks in that skit, I am pretty proud of the way it came out. With the exception of the earlier symbol I had done for Abin Quank, this symbol holds the record for the number of layers I had to use to get the illusion of depth (17!). Pretty spiffy, I think.

So... just one more left... who gets the magic number 160?

Stay tuned later this week....

Love it! What a great tribute for Anita.

And now, in honor of tonight's election results, symbol # 160...

The Election Tyrant

 -

I am a huge fan of the Tyrant.

His ruthlessness efficiency and single mindedness of purpose just warm the cockles of my heart so much that - when I decided to run for LMB Leader this year - there was no one else I would have even considered having on my ticket.

Sure... we didn't win... but that's no fault of the Tyrant. I simply mark that down to the ignorance and shortsightedness of the voting public.

For his symbol, I wanted to show a completely above board system... one where every voice is heard and each vote counts. I wanted to show that... but then I started laughing so hard that I couldn't complete the design. In lieu of that, I decided to simply show the real way that the Tyrant records your votes.

Bah... next year, E.T., this thing is ours! [Wink]

(In all seriousness, though, huge congrats to Peebs and Jerry!!!)

Up next... we line up all the pretty pictures for group shot 2012.

Normally, I'd wait a bit a little longer to see if a newbie is going to hang around a bit before taking a gamble on adding one of these but, given who vouched for him (and the fact that he already has his own LMB wiki article) I feel fairly confident that we'll be seeing quite a bit of:

Blaze

That is so cool and thoughtful, Ex [Smile] Awww! I love it! I bet Blaze will too when he gets his butt over here.

Man, that Mission monitor Board is looking AWESOME.

Oh my gosh, i love it Ex! Boy, I feel honored. Thank you. *blush*

Blaze is so polite, isn't he?

And so cute when he blushes [Wink]

Ex,

Been away for a long time and look what I missed.

GiGi loves her logo. And a for me, Wow!!, A logo showing Faraway powers always seemed too abstract to show. So I really like the idea you had for this.

Oh, wow, these are awesome. I would use mine for my avatar if I knew how to do it...

This is what happens when I go back to lurking on the KYLW thread... I'm not sure if I should be flattered or afraid that I have a stalker. LOL.

You've got a "Stalker"? Sweet!

That's that Ditko sword and sorcery guy, right? What... did they make a figure of him as part of that "Warlord" action figure line in the mid-80's? [Wink]

Today we've got three LMBers who will have you seeing red: Crymsun Kid, Dave Hackett (also known as Rouge), and - because it wouldn't be a Legion without a traitor - our old turncoat, the Red Bee:

Wow, I had never seen this before. Thanks so much!
