What links these three occurred in 1953 for Reagan, 1969 for Ford, and 1972 for Carter. Carter's was the only one not involving blindfolds.

Correct. None were on as president. Carter went as Governor of Georgia, Ford as House Minority Leader, and Reagan as an actor.

That's true, but is also true of a number of states that do not qualify, such as New Mexico or Wyoming.
Hint: One could say the same thing about several Senate elections, including Oregon, Alaska, and Minnesota.
