As a recently retconned-in member in good standing I feel I should have my own gallery here. [Big Grin]

At the moment all I've got to post are pics that I've colored, but who knows what else I might come up with to adorn the walls? Most of these have been posted around before, but I've got a few new ones to post as well. Some are Legion/LMB related, some aren't. Comments are always appreciated, even if it's just to tell me that I suck.

First up are the LMB'ers, drawn by Tony Scott and colored by some loser...

This one's never been posted before, the colored version of yours truly, Loser Lad!

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Next is LMB speedster Beagz. When I ifrst colored this I gave him a Lightning Lad color scheme. After I posted it someone suggested I should have used the red an yellow Flash scheme, which I did. Personally, I thought it would look best in black, so I did one of those too.

Here are all three...which one do YOU like best?!?

I thought Tony's Greybird drawing turned out so nice I colored it twice!!! First one's in traditional Dawnstar yellow...

Then I tried it again in a more natural buckskin style...

Last one for now. This one's not Legion-related.

Here's Mary Marvel drawn by Casey Jones...

Thanks to Loser once again for all his stellar coloring and textures. I'll note that beyond two versions of Freekinos' sketch, he also did background coloring to punch up the avatar I use at left, and I'm also grateful for that.

*sigh*...I didn't neglect it Jeckie dear. My computer BLEW UP before I could get to it! Honestly, though, this one intimidated me a little, which is why I was putting it off until I had a little more practice. Two characters, that long, flowing cape on Crujectra...not to mention the hair. My God the hair...I think I had an easier time doing the detailed wings on the Greybird pic than I would doing that hair justice.

All that being said, it IS a beautiful drawing, and I'd love to give it a shot, but I'm going to have to take my time with it and really do it right before I'll post it here. Don't forget I've got a year's worth of ring-rust to shake off here. [Wink]

I wish I could remember exactly what I did to come up with the background on that avatar. I think I just pasted a photo of a sunet into the background but I'm not sure. I know I didn't color it by hand. I'm still happy with the way it turned out though [Smile]

Whoa. nice stuff LL. What program do you use to color stuff with? I've been tempted to order one of those coloring comics programs but I'm too cheap to just grab one indiscriminately and it seems nobody talks about them so I have no idea which ones might be worth the money and which ones are a straight rip off.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

I use Adobe Photoshop 6. Definitely not a cheap program (The newest version usually retails at around $600 US). I picked mine up on eBay a few years ago for somewhere around $200. For what I use it for it's definitely worth it.

Adobe also puts out Photoshop Elements which is basically a Photoshop Lite, without some of the more advanced features. I haven't used Elements so I can't really say how it stacks up against Photoshop but I'm guessing it's still a pretty kick ass graphics program.

I have used Adobe's Photo Deluxe, which is similar to Photoshop but offers fewer options and a lot less control over layers and such. It's a decent editing program (I used Photo Deluxe on some photomanips I did years ago which I believe are still at the LMBP Yahoo Group) which came bundled with a scanner I bought awhile back. Don't know what that one retails for though.

From what I've heard Paint Shop Pro is comparable to Photoshop but much cheaper (somewhere in the $100-200 range). Again I haven't used it, but I know several people who do and have turned ot some mindblowing work with it.

Outside of those I can't really recommend any other good programs.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

One thing I can hwoleheartedly recommend though is a good graphics tablet. I use a Wacom Intuos 2, which is their midrange tablet, and it's awesome for coloring. With a tablet you're drawing on a surface with a pen, which is much more natural than pushing a mouse around the desk. It gives you a lot more control over your brush strokes than using a mouse and, for me at least, produces a better end result.

My tablet cost me about $200, but Wacom also offers the Graphire line of tablets which you can get now for under $100. From what I've heard the Graphire tablets are nearly as responsive as the Intuos tablets and well worth the money.

I've heard mixed results about other (cheaper) brands of tablets, so I wouldn't really recommend anything other than a Wacom tablet.

Awhile back on LegionPics or one of those groups Steve Lightle posted his original art for one of the panels in Who's Who in the Legion alongside the panel that actually saw print to show how his art was changed by TPTB.

Here's the panel as it originally appeared in "Who's Who in the Legion" #1 (I believe) and Steve's original art, colored by me.

These are wonderful, Lou! Shake that rust and do some more!

I really liked the Sketch Lad - never saw the whole picture, just what dean used as an avatar. Very nice with the miniature "muses" flying around him. Some of the other LMBPers I'd seen before - except for Looks That Kill Lad.

Amazing what a difference the colouring makes on that Lightle Who's Who art!

Thanks FC! I'm working on a couple of projects right now, so sooner or later I'll have new stuff to post here.

Here's one more "from the Archives" is it were. This is the infamous missing page from SLSH #212 featuring Matter Eater Lad and Karate Kid. I submitted this last year as my "audition piece" for Matter Eater Lad: The Series. Apparently I got the job, but I'm still waiting for the inked pages to be sent to me to be colored...

BTW Yellow Kid, if you're still looking I was at Comp USA today and they had Wacon Graphire 2 tablets for $99.99 that came bundled with Adobe Photoshop Elements 1. Could kill 2 birds with one stone if you're thinking about buying a tablet.

I'm not sure but they may also come with ProCreate Painter Classic, which is another paint program you might like. I know that one came with my Intuos tablet.

Here are two more I recently colored. The first one is Mon-El by our own Frog Kid. You can see more of Frog Kid's excellent work in his gallery. The background for this one, which was shamelessly stolen off the 'net, is by 3D Artist Robert Gibala.

Thanks for the compliments Scott & Cobie!

Okay, I gotta get me a tablet now. I've been wanting to start honing my skills to color sequential work. I just hope that Paint Shop Pro works with the Graphire3 (on sale at Best Buy for $99) as that's my graphics program of choice. Can't afford Adobe and PSP is what we use at work plus CostCo sells the full version for under $80.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

PSP will work with a Graphire tablet. The tablet and pen basically replace your mouse as your pointing device, so you can use it with just about any program you would normally use a mouse for.

I'll warn you now that getting used to the tablet takes a little time. I didn't like it at first, and there's still some things that I don't use it for, but for brush work, shading and blending and the like I can't live without it now!

If you haven't used a tablet before I'd suggest hooking it up and then putting your mouse in the desk drawer for about a week. Just use the pen to do everything that you would normally do with your mouse. Use it while you web browse, use it with PSP, use it to check your email. Do everything you would normally do with your mouse but do it using the pen. That'll help you get used to the way the pen works, what it's good for and what it really isn't good for. By the end of the week you'll be comfortable enough with it that it will be second nature to use it for PSP or whatever you plan to use it for.

Working with the tablet is easier for me because I'm left handed, but use a mouse right handed. With the tablet I can draw with the pen in my left hand, and that gives me a lot more control over my lines than pushing the mouse with my right does.

BTW, from what I hear PSP is every bit as good as Adobe Photoshop, so as far as that goes you certainly won't be suffering from an inferior program if you use PSP. Hell, at $80.00 for the full version I might even consider picking it up and trying it out for myself.

Okay, one more for the Jan fans in the house. I started this one a long time ago (before my old computer blew up) and only recently finished it.

Here's Element Lad in his Cockrum designed 70's costume, drawn by Colleen Doran...

Posted by Greybird on :

Gorgeous idea, sketch, and color. Yet that outfit (always the best color scheme for Jan, I felt) raises the same question in my mind every time I see it:

How did that green upward arrow ever get past the prudes at the Comics Code Authority?

One of the true mysteries of the comics universe [Wink]

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Could have been worse. Imagine it was a big green arrow pointing downwards! I bet that one wouldn't have slipped by the CCA!

BTW, little known fact (or maybe not so little known?) that costume was originally designed as a costume for Colossal Boy, hence the upwards arrow, indicating growth. For some reason they (I don't recall if it was Cockrum, the editors or DC itself) scrapped the idea and then brought it back later for Element Lad after Gim's Cockrum era costume (which was a rejected Ultra Boy design) was introduced.

I can't remember where I read all of that.

Gawd, I only wish I could draw like that! No, as Crujectra said those were drawn by Tony "Freekinos" Scott, who I fully expect to see drawing comics for a living sooner or later.

As for my own talents, I'm afraid my drawing is more similar to Cobalt Kid's than it is to Tony's. [Wink]

I do too. That was always my favorite E-Lad costume, possibly because that was the one he was wearing in the first Legion issue I ever owned back when I was a kid. It was one of the S/LSH Earthwar issues that I got in one of those 3 comics in a plastic bag deals that they used to sell at K-Mart in the late 70's and early 80's. I didn't pick up another Legion comic for quite a few years after that, but that Earthwar issue made a big impression on me. I still have it around here somewhere 20-some years after I got it.

Thanks for the compliments Miss T., Future and Kat! I'm glad you guys like this stuff!

All I can say Loser, is that your work is Great. Hell now I'm wishing I had a sketch of myself. [Smile]

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Thanks Healex!

That Sketch Lad was probably one of the toughest ones to do. The spectrum gradient was all one layer, and it was tough trying to blend in the shading on that layer without mixing the colors. Turned out pretty well though, but I've learned so much since doing those first couple that I would probably have done it totally different if I was doing it today.

I still like the effect of the spectrum. I imagine it flowing and changing as Sketch Lad moves rather than staying static.

Well, it was a rough sketch, not intended to be a finished drawing, so for what it is I think it looks great. I enjoyed the lighting challenge that the pose presented over the typical pinup shot that I normally color. This was definitely a cool perspective shot!

And thanks for the compliments! [Smile]

I'll give it a shot, but I'll have to see what I can do about un-coloring them first. The way I usually color isn't really going to work over previously existing color. Lemme see what I can do.

I have a couple of things I'm working on right now, so it may be a bit before I can get to them.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Okay, these didn't take long at all, so here they are. I couldn't come up with an easy way to un-color the ones you sent Abin, so I just went to HeroMachine and recreated them without color. They were kind of small, so I enlarged them, which is why they're a bit blurry. Didn't turn out too badly though despite that.

Here's Abin Quank, created with HeroMachine, colored by me:

He does, he looks like he's going to sing. [Wink]

And if I didn't say it before great job and thanks.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Yikes! Abin singing probably would be no good! [Big Grin]

I didn't think of that when I was coloring it but that sceptre he's holding does kind of look like a microphone.

And Terry, there are two things you really need to be able to color like I do. A decent photo editing program and lots of practice. MS Paint is okay for basic coloring, but it won't get you really good results because you can't use layers. Anything you color wipes out the stuff you're coloring on top of, so you can't color over lines without wiping out the lines, and you can't add shading and highlights over the colors because they'll wipe out the colors.

There are a lot of good free editing programs available for download on the web, so if you're serious about being able to turn out good stuff you should look into a few of those. There are some links in the image editing thread that's highlighted in this forum.

The program you're using and the options it offers really do have a lot to do with how well your stuff turns out. The rest is just experience and learning *how* to do what you want to do.

Nice pic, but (you knew that was coming [Razz] ) what's up with Vi's costume? If that's her original (postboot) suit, the stripe should be light, including the whole above-the belt torso except the black V, and if it's her LeViathan suit, the dark leg stripe should end in a ^ touching the bottom of the V.

And if it was deliberate, sorry about this [Smile]

Oh, and why is Zoë blushing? [Razz]

That'll teach me not to go on memory! [Big Grin]

It was intended to be the later version of the costume (which I like better) when I was coloring it, but since the upwards arrow above the belt wasn't apparent in the sketch I forgot about it and didn't add it in.

Although now that you bring it up it the earlier version with the light middle stripe would be more consistent with the shyness apparent in her stance and the costume that Zoe is wearing there, wouldn't it? Ah well, I still have to full Photoshop file for that pic saved, so I can always go back and retouch it to make it more accurate.

And I'm not sure if Zoe is blushing, or just flushed with excitement about whatever she's contemplating doing with (to?) young Violet. [Wink]

Could you give me some idea of how you'd like him to be colored? What's his skin tone, what color are his clothes, etc. Just something to get me headed in the right direction.

Actually, in that sense, either of them are accurate - for Vi to be around and Kinetix to not be a cat but wearing the skirt, it has to be them from between Legionnaires #52 (where she temporarily reverted to a darker version of her original suit, before switching to the no-lilac suit in #53), and Lgs #57, where Zoë goes off to the anomoly.

Looking at the Original B&W version tho, Moy shaded the (black) V, but not the stripe. And doesn't draw the ^ in. Which makes it pretty clear that it was intended to be the earlier suit [Smile]

Good news though - either way, she should have the green streak in her hair [Razz]

Hey, Lou

I found this sketch online and the artist had titled her Misty. Seems like destiny that she should be colorized for moi. [Big Grin] I'd be interested to see what colors you would choose for me.

<font size="6"> Click for fullsize image</font s>

This is a cool sketch of Aquaman, Firestorm, and the Martian Manhunter by the same artist. I included it just in case you'd like it and want to color it.

Click for fullsize image

And this is a Power Girl by the same artist. She's already been colorized and I'm wondering if you can alter the colors. I'm completely out of my depth in asking this, so you tell me if it's possible to alter her costume's color scheme to less Power Girl and more "Misty." I love that she has brown hair and wears glasses (me-like). Plus, she has ginormous chest pillows (also me-like).

Thank you for your consideration, Lou [smooch]

Those are great Misty. I'll see what I can do with them. Do you know who the artist is that drew those?

Also, what do you have in mind when you say you want to make the colors more "Misty". Do you have a certain scheme in mind?

Posted by Myriad on :

I totally put "Misty" in your hands, Lou. You have a great sense of color. Whatever best flatters her brown hair. I believe the artist's online name was Shade.

I did absolutely love the colors of the UP arrow costume of Element Lad, though. But I'm not convinced they'd look as good with her brown hair. Bottom line: surprise me! [Smile]

And thanks!

So anyway, a while ago Tony Scott (Freekinos) posted a great drawing he did of a reboot Dream Girl and Star Boy. I always wanted to color it, but never got around to it. A couple of days ago Viviane asked me if I could color it to reflect our LMB characters. The drawing was perfect for it (especially since Dean's design for the Loser Lad costume was originally based on Star Boy's) so I figured I'd give it a shot. Here's High Priestess Viviane and Loser Lad, altered from a drawing by Tony Scott.

You've really mastered lighting in these, Loser -- but you have for some time, now.

The Wonder Girl immediately above is especially subtle, and notable because of it. I'm struck by how often such 2D blondes are made to look artificial in their hair color, for no reason I've understood, but this one isn't.

Kinetix is genuinely animating Christmas-tree lights, and the glow of the colors makes all the difference. That's one of the better examples (though they're all good ones) of how a good colorist can be a collaborator, more than an afterthought.

I'm also glad you got a fully inked Kid Q from Dean to bring out so well, especially those purples. He hasn't been choosing to use his own sizable finishing talents very much lately (broad and unsubtle hint ... {g})

Thanks for the compliments all. And thanks to Grey for taking the time to comment.

Probably more than anything I've struggled to try to create realistic lighting, and while I think I've improved a bit it's still something I don't feel I've completely gotten down. I have quite a few unfinished pieces where I just can't seem to get the lighting right. But, as I said I think I'm getting better with it, and I'm glad the effects are noticible in the finished products.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it!

There's a good example of what I was saying in the PBOL Gallery thread about working in a color that will do what you want it to and then changing it later with adjustment layers. Everything in that picture except the skin tone, the gold on her top and the background gradient was colored in the same medium shade of blue, and then changed after the fact with adjustment layers. In fact the top and the shorts (including the white stars on the shorts) were all colored on the same layer in the same color. Shading and highlights were done with the "Burn" and "Dodge" tools.

Don't know if that technique would apply to photomanipping, though I don't see why it wouldn't.

Lou, I have to say the more i see of your colouring work the less difference i can tell between you and "professional" colourists. (if that makes sense)

I really would like to see how your work looks on an actual page of a comic.

Actually I would love to see if your work could improve that old hero machine avitar I made of my self. (hint hint) [Big Grin]

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Makes sense to me (though I'm not quite sure I agree...). Thanks Darden. [Smile]

I haven't really done any sequential stuff except for that Matter Eater Lad and Karate Kid page I posted earlier in this thread, but that was a long time and a lot of practice ago. Personally I don't really think that page was that well done, but I was just starting out then. If I can find some decent, hi res page scans out there that interest me I'll try coloring them just to see what happens.

As far as the Hero Machine Faraway goes, I'd be happy to give it a shot. I'm assuming there's still a version of that posted on the Yahoo Group or Outpost somewhere.

Last one for now. This was another one I started over the summer and came back to finish just recently. I've always had a hard time with backgrounds, and this one has a fairly complicated background. Lou,

One thing I have noticed is that I never see the best parts of your work in the thumbnails you post, even when I open them up in another window they still look better when I enlarge them to maximum size.

I particularly liked the highlights on Vi’s black leggings in the Van Briessen piece. When you look at these it really looks as if these are material, almost jean like stretched over her thighs.

The Supergirl is another one I like with the creases in the costume picked out well, the blue is possibly a little dark but as a one off works for me. I prefer the lighter blue for an ongoing comic.

Jade I think I have seen before and I don’t see what it is you are unhappy with. Unless it is the face and hair that is. I think the greens together with that green back ground may not work to the best effect.

PS
That Faraway Avatar should be at the outpost, but if you get stuck I should be able to e mail you the orginal.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Well, I've got to give credit for a lot of the details to the artists themselves. I usually just follow along with what's drawn, and try to embellish as best I can. Sometimes it works well, and other times (I'm thinking of the Moy Wondergirl I posted a couple of weeks ago as an example) it doesn't. On that one I actually had to erase a bit of the shading that Moy drew in because it was just too dark when colored. I still think it doesn't look right even with that. As a black and white pencil sketch the shading works fine, but colored I think it was just a bit too heavy.

As far as Supergirl's blue goes, in the original sketch Rio used some rather harsh shadows, so a lighter blue didn't really look quite right. Created too much contrast between what were intended to be the lighter parts of the costume and the darker shadowy parts. Personally I prefer the darer blue myself, but agree that it doesn't fit with what was esablished for the character.

On the Jade piece I'm not quite happy with the entire background, but I think a big part of that is just the large blocks of green. I tried to add depth to them to make them look more three dimensional, but there's only so much you can do with solid blobs of color like that. I suppose they didn't have to be all green, but it seemed to fit the character best, as if they were one of her energy constructs or something. Also, osme of the buildings in the background don't quite look right to me. Too flat, and just kind of blah. I think the only part of the background I'm really happy with is the little tree at the bottom right.

I'm probably being too critical and nitpicky about this stuff, but it's amazing how different some of these these things look with you look back on them with fresh eyes. You tend to find a lot of stuff that you overlooked while working on them the first time through.

Anyhow, Viv and Darden, thanks for your comments. Darden, I found the Heromachine pic posted on the Outpost, so I'll mess with it sometime soon. And for the record I like things that include Viv too... [Wink]

I haven't, but I'll check it out. I've been a Hughes fan since the JLI days, and I always enjoy seeing more of his stuff. This is the first Hughes piece I've colored, but I'm sure it won't be the last.

By the way, I snagged the Hughes GL from the Comic Art Community, which is one of the places I go to search for new material. There's work from a ton of different artists there (including a huge Hughes gallery). Some of the sketches there are a little smallish for my tastes, but I've found a couple of decent pics there, some of which I've already colored and posted here, and some that I plan to do in the future.

Nice attempt at colouring, but it's beardless Aquaman in orange & green, and thus can't be good (or cool). It's a law of nature.

Well, they're all gorgeous in this go-round, but that Al Rio piece got sent to the moon by your color. It's almost glowing. Making the most of the nebula-ish background adds to Dawny's ecstatic feeling in the foreground.

I'm glad you put up the larger version. When printed, it creates a much sharper piece by far at 8.5 x 11. I love this Canon i850 color printer!

Grey - Glad you were happy with the Rio Dawnstar. You know that any time anyone does any Dawny-related art around here that you are the "target audience". If you're pleased with it then I guess I can consider it a job well done! I thought Rio did an excellent job on that pic, so I'm glad I could do it justice with my coloring of it.

Dean - I appreciate your praise, especially sine I know that you know what kind of work I'm putting in to some of these pieces. I'm glad the non-Legion pieces have found a receptive audience here as well. I know that the Legion is the common interest that drew us all here in the first place, but it's nice to not feel restricted by it in what I'm allowed (encouraged, even!) to share here. I've really found a hobby that I enjoy with coloring these things, and it does make me happy that so many others are enjoying what I've been posting (especially someone who's got such a talent for it in their own right as you do Dean-o).

Heh. I feel the same way about your work on those two Hughes Dawnstar pics that are up for the challenge. You did such a great job with them I don't think I could do anything that could hold a candle to them. I love your colors on Hughes' stuff. Your style and his really do compliment each other.

Here's how I spent most of the day today. Easily the most complicated image I've colored so far. Worth the trouble though. I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out.

KISS was one of my favorite bands growing up. When I saw this image I knew I had to color it. Here's KISS, drawn by Al Rio.

Like the Dawnstar I posted earlier, the finished product is too large to post here, so I'm posting a smaller version. You can check out the full-sized version here.

Great coloring on a nice picture of them, Lou!

Thanks guys. Managed to get a couple of things done over the weekend between debilitating bouts of lower back pain... [Frown]

Here's the last two VanBriesen Legionnaires. I had something more interesting in mind for the background of the Shady pic, but I couldn't find the right source pics to use, so I went with the trusty cloud filter. For the Duo Damsel I pretty much created the Monitor Board from scratch using the icons that Gary uploaded for avatars here (so thanks to him for that!) and a couple of random computer screen images from a picture of a sci-fi film set.

Dru and Lou and Cru and Lou!!! What teamwork!!!! Fantastic!

I like that you gave Shady red lips. The colors for Lu's background look kind of like they're out on a barren planetoid. I wonder if doing more of a monochromatic scheme would be less distracting from the figures? The monitor board and computer components look excellent.

Your colors on Cru's drawing are just perfect. I'd love it if he could do sequentials for Viv and you could color those. So many projects, so little time...

Still, I do enjoy working on stuff that's created by the posters here. A lot of times I have more fun doing those than I do working on the professionally drawn pics. I'm all for more fan art on this board!

I've looked at all the pics in this section, and have to say I'd hate to have to choose the best. Lots of real nice stuff here.
(Although I DO have a preference for a certain white-winged female.)
Also, I do a bit of drawing myself, but not of LSH characters. Is there any particular place I might TRY posting them? (A few are M rated)

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Thanks for the compliments!

I'm not sure what you're asking baycent. Are you asking about where to host pictures for posting here? If so, check out this thread for some suggestions of free webhosting services. Once you have them hosted somewhere, just start a thread and post your stuff.

If you're asking whether or not it's okay to post non-LSH stuff here, I assure you it is. I'm sure there are many here who'd like to see your work, whether it's LSH-related or not.

As far as the mature stuff goes, it's not really appropriate to post it openly on the board, but it is okay to post a link to such stuff, as long as you give a warning about what lies at the other and of the link.

It's all hand done. I color the base layer for the hair in a medium shade of the color I want it to be. Then I use burn/midtones with a soft brush to shade the darker parts and dodge/midtones with a soft brush to add some highlights. Then I use burn again, this time with a one-pixel hard brush set to burn/highlights to draw in the individual strands of hair. Takes a few minutes, but having a tablet makes it much quicker and easier.

BC, you already have your centaur and other pics stored on your Website. You just need to know their addresses on the Web.

(And whether they're too adult or nude, say, to be inappropriate for office screens or kids. Those should just use the URL tag for inserting the link in the text of your message. See the Full Reply Form.)

To display an image in your message, use the button for the IMG tag. In brackets, it precedes (IMG) and follows (/IMG) your Web address for your piece of art.

If you want to display art that's more than about 300 pixels wide, use the button for the THUMB tag instead. This will create a 200-pixel-wide thumbnail that readers can click for the full version in a new browser window.

The Full Reply Form (hit the Reply button or the one below Quick Reply) will step you through it.

I'm enjoying these, don't get me wrong. It's just that these pages have so many large files linked to them that this one (page 19), for example, has taken over 15 minutes to load. Yes, I'm one of the primitives who still only has 52Kbps dial-up.

So I can't scan it more than once a week. Even a second visit later in the day means that these have expired from my browser cache. (I only keep that at 10 MB.)

I'm glad that Loser is using THUMBnails, but as others have pointed out, their benefits in easier display don't mean that they take any less time to load -- the originals are sized down by LW.net.

I hate to say it, but the only way around this is to create (and host) thumbnails oneself, making a 200-to-300-pixel .gif version, which would be displayed with a link to the original this way (change { } to [ ]):

{URL=OriginalLocationHere.jpg}{IMG}ThumbnailLocationHere.gif{/IMG}{/URL}

It'd be worth thinking about, for a page that has as many images as this one.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Ouch. Dial-up sucks. I feel for you Grey.

For me something like this might not be a bad idea. I have enough space available where it wouldn't be much of a problem to host the additional files, but I know some of the folks using free image hosting might run into a space crunch trying to host two separate files for each image they want to host here.

I'll think about doing that from now on.

This is Randall Flagg, the villian from Stephen King's novel "The Stand". He also appears in King's epic "The Dark Tower". I don't know what the artist's name is, but he has a website at http://www.dirtbagtoons.com.

Considerable menace there! Great job!

I wondered where Nigel Lowrey ended up. He did many gorgeous portraits (B&W and color) of Legionnaires that were a staple of the old, pre-de-archived, LegionPics Yahoo! Group. Has he lost interest in the Legion, I wonder?

Thanks Wayne!

The background in the Roland pic is just a sunset picture I pinched off the net. I've actually used it in a couple of different pics (like the Sunny Lee Aquaman a few pages back). I just thought it worked better than the drawn-in background that the picture had originally.

I don't know where Nigel is now. He's got a website up here which includes a handful of his Legion drawings, but it looks like it hasn't been updated in quite a while.

BTW Grey, I've been doing the thumbnail thing you suggested for the last page or two. Are the pages loading any faster for you now?

Very good job on the Tower pics Lou. The artist seemed to capture a bit of Jamey Sheridan in the drawing of Flagg. At least it looks that way to me.

And I love the Tinya pic. I don't think I've seen that particular Moy before. Is it a new sketch?

Posted by Loser Lad on :

The Tinya pic is dated 1998, and I remember seeing it somewhere years ago, but Kat just added it to her Moy site a few weeks ago.

I agree that the drawing was pretty heavily influenced by the movie version of Flagg. I don't really recall the mini-series too well. I saw it when it aired originally, and wasn't very impressed with it, but since then I haven't been able to picture Flagg without seeing Jamey Sheridan's portrayal of him in my mind.

BTW, the artist that drew the Flagg pic also has a couple of sample pages that he drew of a Gunslinger comic posted on his site. You can see them here: http://www.dirtbagtoons.com./images/drawings/lg_comic08.jpg

Gorgeous recent colors, amigo. I'm getting to like Phil Moy's drawings even a bit more than his brother's.

And, to answer your query above after two months (sorry about that): Yes, the pages are loading considerably faster, in as little as one-third the time they used to take. Thanks for doing the separate thumbnail files.

Glad things are loading faster this way Grey. The little extra effort is worth it if it makes things easier on everyone.

Hi Caliente!

Whats up with Wanda? Last i heard she had married the Vision, had a couple of kids and was supposedly living happily ever after...unless Magneto's genes had a greater influence on her than any one ever expected....

I think you might want to sit down, LAM.

She's gone insane and warped the entire Marvel Universe to her liking. You might have heard mention of House of M -- that's all Wanda's doing. Someome else could probably explain that better than me.

Actually...Isnt Magneto using her to Warp the MU? Im lost on House of M...GLA has been the only Marvel Title Ive picked up in months

Posted by Spellbinder on :

I think the gist of it is that Wanda has used her power to grant everyone their heart's desire.

Posted by legionadventureman on :

Sounds good, Crujectra....

There had to be a catch, of course

Posted by Caliente on :

Well, it's going to destroy the universe but, other than that, I don't think there are any catches, no.

I think House of M is actually really interesting. It's all AU but at the same time not entirely... I explain badly. It's fun though.

On the question of Wanda: She totally tripped out and "dissembled" the Avengers last year. The House of M is only now happening because she's really gone over the edge.

...yeah. That's about it. The short version, anyway.

Aaand moving on...

Here's Cru's kick ass "Girl's Night Out" picture. Read the story that inspired it here.

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Here's JoeBoy's Legion Advanture Man. I originally promised LAM I wouldn't color his costume pink, but since I have absolutely no self control I couldn't help myself. So here's the normal blue and silver version and the "Pink Nightmare" version.

 - -

And, since I broke my promise and did the pink LAM version anyway, I whipped up this nifty "Legion Adventure Man Comics" cover to make up for it.

 -

JoeBoy drew all the characters and colored Caliente and Luna. Dean Lee colored the Sketch Lad. The cover elements and parts of the background were "borrowed" from Scott Johnson's "Adventure 300" cover recreation.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Anytime.

Posted by legionadventureman on :

Hey, Sketch Lad, how did you get your avatar to look so "pouty"?

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Cru drew that picture a couple of years ago. I colored it and then animated it using Image Ready. I haven't done anything like that for a long time. I was pleased to see some of the interesting things Nightcrawler has added to the avatar selection. Many of the images there were created by me, and I'm honored whenever Nighty makes them into avatars and then when people use them.

Right now, there is a ton of great art by LW members going on. A true Renaissance! I love it. Especially when an artist creates an image in black and white, and then Lou colors it!

Hmm, no wonder my intuition was telling me to look at this thread for some reason. Do I have to challage you to a duel Lou? If that happens it really wouldn't go well for you. [Razz] Well good job with the Skids pic anyway. FYI Skids (Sally Blevins) is a mutant who was best know for her time in the junior version of X-Factor the X-Terminators and also being in the New Mutants for a short time along with her boyfriend Rusty. She had the power to generate a frictionless/deflective forcefield and she couldn't really control her powers that well when she was 1st introduced. Rusty had pyrokinetic abilities. They were like the prototype of the Rogue-Gambit relationship.

Hmm, no wonder my intuition was telling me to look at this thread for some reason. Do I have to challage you to a duel Lou? If that happens it really wouldn't go well for you. [Razz]
Hahahaha. :cough: Nothing happened!! It was but mere flirtation. Everyone knows Lou and Cru have a thing, anyway... [Wink] I would never impose on that.

She was also a Morlock (one of the 'lucky' ones, since she got out of the tunnels pre-massacre). She and Rusty went undercover with the Acolytes after the New Mutants thing but ended up brainwashed or... something dumb. In the end, Rusty died and Skids was alone. She also appeared some in X-Force as a relatively well-adjusted college student. Last I remember seeing her, she was with X-Corp L.A. in X-Treme X-Men. There, more than you ever wanted to know. If I had a nickel for every time some guy challenged me to a duel for flirting with his fiancee... [LOL]

Thanks for the compliment and the background on Skids, BTW. Like I said I knew nothing about the character going in to it.

It's been awhile. I haven't done too much coloring while I've been away. Unfortunately a lot of what I did do was either lost in my 2006 computer crash or my more recent one.

Anyway, here's some old stuff that I did manage to save that was never posted here.

The first one is by our own DrakeB3004. This is probably my favorite of the lot.

Good to see you Dean! You too Kat!

Those pictures I just posted are at least 3 years old. It remains to be seen if I still got it. I'm still not sure how my new laptop is going to handle running Photoshop.

Me too! Awesome stuff!

Lou, you interested in coloring some original Infectious Lass art by Greg LaRocque? If so, do I post it here or how?

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Like I said I'm not sure how my computer is going to handle running Photoshop, but if I can I'd like to give it a shot. You can either post it here or email it to me: loserlad@roadrunner.com

I went through the whole thread!
What wonderful work!

Please, find a way to go back to your love, coloring.

I still have some LMBers to download but I don't know how much this little loaner can handle.
I'll probably have to do it all again, but it will be worth it.

Welcome back, LL!

I found Dean's Mysa here, one of two that you colored so beautifully.

I know you don't like multiple identities, at least I remember reading it on the Monitor Board, but, Mysa is for the roll play against Kardi.

Otherwise, he thinks every character I write is me, and they aren't.
Well, they are, but not really.
Never mind.

Just, thanks.

That is an awesomely snot-tastic shade of green on that Infectious Lass pic! I can feel myself sniffling just looking at it.

You made the purple hair really pop out as well, and I like it!

More importantly, the shades of green and yellow on the costume just highlight how incredibly cool that outfit is, with all the curvey lines and half-moon-looking things. Is that a Cockrum design? It looks like the crazy sort of stuff he'd draw Projectra and Lilandra and Violet and Polaris in...

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Thanks for the compliments Set. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Cockrum designed that Infectious Lass costume. So complex.

Here's one I just did tonight. Alan Scott by Gene Gonzales.

Click for fullsize image

I really like Gene's style. I'll probably be doing a lot more of his stuff in the future.

Posted by Set on :

He's got a great golden age / silver age sort of style. Everyone looked kind of thick and uncomplicated, compared to today's long-limbed and finely muscled characters.

Posted by Candle on :

I love the gentle goodness of the Gonzales style.

Lori is so pretty ~ you really don't have to look like a hooker to be in comics!

Of course, the LaRocque Drura is gorgeous, too.
The drawing is wonderful but the colors make it so alive and moving!

Lovely job, LL.

The Smallville episode's what inspired me to do the Wonder Twins pic. Speedy too. Mia Dearden (the current Speedy in the comics) appeared in the episode before the Twins.

I've been thinking about the Ernie work.
Ummmmm.
I, um, Ernie's a puppet, you know.
Ummm.
Is he stuffed with red batten or something?
The picture might be less disturbing if the red was replaced with white or aqua or something more in keeping with the structure of puppets rather then the blood and brains of people.

This isn't a dis or anything, just a thought in keeping with the reality of the medium involved, in this case, cloth, fur, thread and stuffing.
sorry
