say, LL, is there a way you can move this thread to another place since we are going way off the point that we were supposed to talk about Hawkman covers? or can you change the subject? I wonder?

Even though it's gone off from the original topic, I'm inclined to leave this thread where it is (Matt is free to move it if he sees fit, but I'm ok to leave it here). The topic still applies to the first half of the thread and there's nothing stopping anyone from steering things back to the original topic.

But... his wings aren't actually attached... are they?!
Sidebar: Three truisms remain for the worst thing that can be done to a character--
1) Female characters are raped.
2) Male characters have someone CLOSE to them raped or killed;
and 3) Winged characters have their wings torn off. How original... That goes all the way back to pulling the wings off insects circa pre-school...

I can understand people raving about the painted covers by Alex Ross, Adam Hughes, and the guys who've done covers for HAWKMAN, STARMAN and THE SPECTRE.
But in the 1980s, the guy who was blowing me away with this sort of thing on a regular basis was STEVE RUDE on NEXUS! In that case, it was the regular iterior artist doing his own fully-painted covers! (Somehow with comics that more "honest" to me. Back in the 70's, it used to bug the hell out of me when I'd see some gorgeous DAVE COCKRUM cover on a Marvel Comic, and the interior was by some mismatched team of amateurs who hadn't learned how to draw or ink yet...)

And I, too, was curious as to all the blood and apparent ripping off of the wings. Does this Hawkman not have his wings attached to a harness? I've not read the title and don't know how he corresponds to the previous versions of the character.

Damn, that's rather gory to be the cover (though it's a nice painting nevertheless). I think his wings ARE just attached via the harness -- it doesn't look like they're a part of his body. (I was rather amused at how quickly he put on his costume in the latest issue -- I would have expected that it would take AT LEAST a coupla minutes to change...)
His chest seems to be bleeding as much as his back...

Regarding wings being ripped off, it also happened to Angel at one point (before he became Death or Arcangel with the metal wings -- he's since grown them back though).

well, if I remember right, that story is part two which Hawkman will face his new #1 enemy - as coined "Hawkman's greatest foe" - named Headhunter. I am curious about him, so I will keep buying that book! I collected almost all Hawkman issues. except 1960s.

I don't have all that much Hawkman in my collection, but if an Archive shows up on eBay for a decent price, I'll snag it.
As for wings getting ripped off, I recall an issue of Hellblazer where John Constantine arranges for an uppity angel to get worked over in that fashion.
