Gimallon stands parade ground erect.

As the Father Giver to Snaija Patel, Mega, as she formally marries Commander Hor Elli, Cruiser, of the Daxamite Northern Fleet, it is part of his role to stand guard over his charge until the ceremony passes responsibility to the Groom.

This has always stuck Enri as a bit of a performance, and probably quite inappropriate that the female in the arrangement should be treated like a rare cargo while the male has no such restrictions. Enri Longtan cannot think why any of his team of Leviathons would ever need to be protected like this. The fashions of marriage had changed greatly in the last century and where once both partners would enter into it together as equals it was becoming increasingly common to find that one or the other would claim responsibility for the other. As he stood ‘guard’ over Mega, breathing in her delightfully spicy scent, Gimallon couldn’t decide which of them was the most ridiculous. Of course Snaija had other ideas as she stood on the podium dressed in the most outrageous outfit Enri would ever have imagined she’d possess.

Snaija had designed the outfit herself. As was traditional on Imsk, it was all in ivory with rich purple accents. Her veil hung like a frozen wave over her face, its satin like sheen making eye contact a fleeting thing. Her hair had been a master stroke. It’s usual straight dark wealth had been gently curled, softening her profile, and it’s ringlets and hoops had been rather artfully arranged over one bare shoulder and breast. The three fragile Loopsi flowers that she had placed above her brow gave a crinkling whisper as he breeze swept by. Her dress had been made from Imskian Sunsilk; it’s delicious iridescence shone like reflections on water as she moved, hinting at her curves underneath. As was the fashion she kept her arms and legs bare though had several white gold bangles around both ankles, small bells woven into these gave a small laughing tinkle as she had walked up to the podium with her Maiden Guards.

Sparkzzz, as partner to Hor Elli’s Best Man, Moh Johh, and Hol El, Gimallon’s partner, were both honoured to be asked to provide this service. Enri had a slight suspicion that Hol El found it all a bit silly but of course was too polite to admit this publicly. He would ask her tonight. Sparkzz was asked at the last possible moment, they told her it was because they had only just decided to get married on a romantic whim. The truth was simply that the couple had wanted the minimum of fuss and the beautiful Winathian could, with the best intentions in the world, be a trifle indiscreet.

Enri had to admit that both the Maiden Guards were beautiful in their flowing teal green suits. He would try to persuade Hol El to wear that colour more often as she looked stunning in it. When he had first seen the two in their outfits he had been speechless. His team mate Snaija obviously had a hidden talent at designing clothes. Quite a considerable talent Enri believed.

Enri didn’t look around, both Snaija and him stared into the middle distance, looking at an imaginary point in the lush rolling greenery in front of them. The subtle music that had been piped around them changed into the Approach of Man, the 32nd Century opus of the much maligned musical genius Yan Brun. It was the tune that Hor Elli had chosen to arrive to and as much as Enri thought it might have been a bit heavy for the proceedings standing here on the floating isle with his charge at his side it’s rousing chorus and multi layered harmonics stirred a feeling in him that later he could only attribute to the overall beauty of the ceremony itself. He quickly wiped the tear from his eye and turned to watch as the two Daxamite soldiers approached the podium.

Glorion regrets listening to the Beetle within his belly.

Glorion constantly regrets listening to the Beetle, in the same way one would regret forgetting to take an umbrella out when the forecast is for rain and the heavens open. A slight regret that is forgotten perhaps once one has found shelter and dried ones hair. This time he had real, genuine doubts about his current situation. Glorion was rather scared for his own health, and he could see that there would be some serious political ramifications were they to be caught. And as the Beetle had persuaded Glorion, much against his better judgement it must be noted in his defence, to commit a seriously illegal act he was a trifle scared that he may end up being entertained in a brig very soon.

And it had all started out so well as well.

Glorion shifted the unconscious body from one shoulder to the other and peered around the corner, desperately scared that the alerted Legionnaires would find him. Why had he allowed the Beetle to persuade him to kidnap the girl? And even before that, why had Glorion listened when the NowYouSeeMeNowYouDon’t Beetle had suggested that, just for fun, they sneak invisibly aboard the ‘Stroid and have a look around? Why-oh-why hadn’t Glorion just reported to Kord Das with the message from the Many Headed Choir as would have been expected?

Was it too late to go back now?

Helen of Thermyscira wasn’t particularly happy with two of her current teammates.

Rocket Joe and Lady Reptilla were both slightly lower than shit in the great scheme of things she thought. They had never been particularly fond of her when she had fought along side them in the Sol Defence League and they had made it very apparent that they disapproved of her even more now that she had returned from the Paradise Isle Sphere with a cloud over her reputation. Thankfully there was also Zoe Saugin, the former Kinetix of the 30th century Legion present too so Helen didn’t feel completely uncomfortable. Although they had not said too much to each other Helen was sure that they would have a common dislike of Joe and Reptilla. Not the best basis for a friendship, she knew but at least it was a start.

Their mission was simple, but Helen was happy that Das had allowed her to return into the Legion’s fold with the minimum of fuss. He had said of her restoration into the ranks that it was with “a happy heart {he} welcomed the return of the greatest Amazon Warrior to the Legion. Any disciplinary action would be highly inappropriate” and with his High Media contacts the press had stopped hounding her there and then. The rumours, whispers and innuendoes would take much longer to settle down though.

So here she was with three other Legionnaires on a mission to request the aid of the Great Dragon Herds in the upcoming Great Push into Dark Space. En Route they had to collect a couple more team members, still that was not the major part of the task so Helen focussed on researching the Great Herds in the Library Pod. If for no other reason it kept her away from the money grabbing hypocrites Joe and Reptilla.

“Helen, we’re nearly there, do you want to stand by the South docking bay and get ready to welcome aboard our guests please.” Zoe’s rich voice over the speaker system was unexpected to Helen as she had immersed herself in an info-plug. Helen was grateful for the older woman’s easy manners and genuine friendliness. Using the speaker system was seen as archiac to some but the telepathways were perhaps too intimate for such a simple message.

Activating the return call and agreeing to meet the approaching party Helen strode down the corridor to the docking bay at the bottom of the ship.

“Who are we expecting by the way Zoe?”

“Two of our missing members Helen. Jo Nah, my wonderful husband, and a Freetrader tracker called Clear Skies Coming.”

Triple Cubed smiles her best smile.

Shaysi Lavender is a very funny lady. And intelligent. Very intelligent. She is tall, slim, well turned out in a classically stylish black dress. And funny. Triple Cubed had been surprised how great a sense of humour the tall lady had, with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes and an infectious laugh. Yup, Shaysi was a funny lady. And she was charming, gracious and totally disarming with her self depreciating – without being pathetic! – and obviously well intended comments. The beautiful woman from the San ‘frisco University is, worst of all in Triple Cubed’s mind, so obviously over her relationship with Kid Mental that there is no threat there.

Kid Mental is surly, argumentative, high handed, undermining, snarly, stubborn and so obviously NOT so over their relationship.

Triple Cubed smiles though her face aches and the urge to find a large object – preferably, say Kid Mental’s head – and repeatedly kick in until it’s a small bloody smear has risen from her stomach until it catches her throat.

………………………

Hor Elli and Moh Johh look immaculate.

Both are wearing their Daxam Fleet Dress Uniforms and even Hol El has to admit that they cut quite a look in their sharp red and blue outfits, large gold buttons attaching their capes over their shoulders. The two Daxamites stand to the right of Mega and Gimallon with Sparkzzz and Hol El stood the prescribed six feet behind them.

The Pastor of the Church of the Eternal Elvis of Las Vega looks up from his small lectern and smiles a genuine smile.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…”

Glorion had snuck aboard with a worrying ease.

The gangway stream had been left unmonitored and open. With an agile flip he had been onboard the Cruiser and running to find a decent hide out while they decided what to do next.

“It’s too easy Beetle, Kord Das can see the future, how do we know that he hasn’t Seen us come here?”

“Seers can’t See me Glorion. While you are under me invisibility he won’t see either of us, or the unconscious…”

“Hang on! You’re outside the predictive scope of the Naltori? Since when? And do you mean that I have remain invisible…?”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it Glorion. For now though be assured that he can’t see us, or the girl.”

Glorion has squeezed behind a small panel on a lower engineering deck, careful not to disturb the delicate circuits of light and magnetic wire as he burrowed himself out of sight from the walkway.

“Why did you insist I took her Beetle? We both know what she can do”

“Didn’t you find it odd that Kord Das, the Technocrat Messiah Harbinger of Light and all round Hero of our age is torturing a girl?” The NowYouSeeMeNowYouDon’t Beetle’s sarcasm is thick. “Abbi Ardeen may not be the nicest of Beings we’ve met Glorion but what we saw he was doing with her was just plain wrong!”

“Great, so now instead of delivering a guarded message from the Many Headed Choir and spending a few days on Legion ‘Stroid catching up with our friends we’re on the run from the Legion after kidnapping a sociopathic telepathic mass murderer who, last time we met, tried fairly hard to add us to her list of corpses!”

“That’s about the size of it Glorion, good that you can keep up, now could youstop asking so many questions, I need a nap.”

Wee Eavey Hakkawolla sang with an odd deep sounding reverberating tone.

She had spent over a century hiding the Celestial totem, the Amber Man, with the survivors of the Scots-Mauri Firstfooters within the Valenian Realms. This time had taught her how to avoid the Breach spirits and transition Phage Ghosts. At present Wee Eavey is concentrating on keeping her tune while she listens to the scream of the Tamaran Princess as she tears into the dying Valenian realm.

Wee Eavey has enough control over the Song of All Creation that her singing is gently changing the trajectory of the Tamaran’s fleeing energy form. Ever so subtly the reality around the shaft of Xrays that was the Tamaran Princess bends twisting her back upon herself and returning her towards the small breach in the dimensions that had allowed her to enter this Void.

Wee Eavey Hakkawolla was not going to allow the Golden Timespun Princess to be lost in this dying reality’s firmament.

Helen of Thermyscira smiles to herself.

Both Jo Nah and Clear Skies Coming had arrived at the exact co-ordinates they had been given. Both Beings were semi-conscious as they tumbled through space from a burst of unnatural looking light straight into the waiting docking bay.

Helen bent and picked up Jo Nah by the arm, pulling him upright onto her shoulder. Clear Skies Coming tried unsuccessfully to stand up by himself, shaking his head as if he has only just risen from air from a deep pool’s depths.

With great gentleness Helen puts her free arm around the Freetrader’s waist, under his beautiful wings and pulls him closer to her. She walks out of the docking bay with both men’s weight upon her. She carried them to the Auto Doctor for a check up without saying a word. Both men are slowly becoming more aware of their surroundings as they approach the auto-medical niches.

First she places Jo Nah upon the examination chair with a whooomp then turns to the semi-coherent muttering Clear Skies Coming still leaning upon her shoulder and in the softest of tones says “Shush now Freetrader, we will have plenty of time to speak soon. Now shush and allow us to heal you.”

Lobo felt ecstatic.

The little weedy brainiac wannabe Kord Das had personally approached the Main Man with a task and Lobo knew that there would be no-one else with the skill, panache or sheer god given class to be able to do this job. And about time Kord Das admitted that!

Das had handed him a Titanian Islamic Shrood and asked him if he could track the Being who had worn this rag. Lobo had laughed at the ease of the task. “A few points though Lobo. Firstly, this mission is of a delicate nature so keep it to yourself please. Secondly, the Being who wore this is to be returned unharmed, understand? Finally, if there are any others with her you do not have to be so kind hearted about their well being. Witnesses are superfluous as they can be difficult later on, you understand?”

Lobo understood.

He sniffed at the small filthy garment and immediately took the scent. There was a slightly familiar taste to it that tickled the back of his throat. He strode off from Das without even a goodbye and made his way to the East Docking Bay where he had left his favourite Dolphins.

As he jumped upon his steed and rode out of the Bay doors into space he finally realised what was so familiar about the scent! It was close to the Jeybaggo bastich gorilla caritchin’ bastch shart Glorion Freckin’ Grundy! Where ever this missing being had gone it was with the little fat pain in the Main Man’s ass.

And Das had just given Lobo full authority to do whatever he wanted with whoever was with the object of the hunt.

Oh now Lobo was really happy!

“I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

Hol watches in amazement as tears stream down Sparkzzz’s face. The Pastors greased quiff nods as he performs the Dance of the Seven Grinds before the newly weds as they float a foot of the podium, spinning slowly as their first married kiss lingers. It is seen as unlucky to interrupt this moment of affection. Still Gimallon reaches out to put his hand on Snaija’s shoulder. As they slowly, reluctantly separate from their embrace both Hor Elli and Snaija Patel are encompassed in a great hug from Moh Johh, the Daxamite commanders face is a portrait of genuine pride and friendship as he offers his congratulations and best wishes.

Sparkzzz is next to hug the pair, her breasts pressing into Hor Ellis back as she stretches to hold the newlyweds together. Hol El feels a little awkward with these open displays of camaraderie, she has not known any of these Beings for long and the social mores of the Small Worlds are very different to these. Hol El knows that all parties present are worried that the Transgenics Council of Daxam or the Birth Right Plan Foundation of Imsk will be able to exert enough political pressure on Kord Das to have the marriage annulled. On the Small Worlds the very idea of marriage for “love” – whatever that is! – would be totally alien. Within the society where she was raised marriage was seen as a way to provide peace from one’s neighbour and increase holdings.

Still, as Hol El is drawn into a hug from Gimallon she releases those thoughts to the Great Wheel and wishes the couple the very best of fortunes. She sees over Enri’s shoulder that Moh Johh and Sparkzzz are also having a slow lingering kiss, almost echoing the display provided by the newlyweds only a moment before.

Hol El closes her eyes and remembers the unexpected pleasures of the night before. She had been in the Hotel Chalet with both Sparkzzz and Mega. The two Legionnaires had been laughing and gossiping about their fellow Legionnaires, stimmed to maximum, eyes and cheeks red, voices slowly getting louder and more excitable. She had made a small excuse of wanting to grab some air and left to look up at the very strange mix of constellations and pre- aurora light when she had seen him fly down from the clouds to join her.

“I thought I saw you there Hol, why aren’t you with Mega and Sparkzzz? Isn't it supposed to be unlucky for a bride-to-be to be without her Maiden Guards before her wedding?” And with a mischievous smile her added “Do you want Snaija to have bad luck?”

They spoke for about twenty minutes, Hol El becoming increasingly fascinated by the slight smile and charm of the meta being before her. She hadn’t thought for a moment that they would start kissing. And as today was his wedding day she would not have believed they would have been having sexual intercourse on the hillside overlooking the Chalet where his wife to be slowly got smashed in the ancient traditionally prescribed pre-wedding blow out.

Hol El had to admit to herself that the short time she spent last night with Commander Hor Elli of the Daxam Fleet was one of the most passionate moments of her life.

She also hoped it wasn’t going to be the last.

Zoe Saugin watches on a CCC monitor Infoskin.

The Amazon had lifted both Jo and the Freetrader from the docking bay’s cold floor and carried them with a surprising gentleness out into the corridor and into the Auto Doctor niche. Zoe watches the guarded way that the amazon warrior deals with the Freetrader. There is a story here that has a greater depth than the rumours and tittletattle she has heard, Zoe is sure of that. There is a poignant tenderness about the way that Helen of Thermyscira is holding onto Clear Skies coming through out the Doctor’s examination.

Zoe thinks to herself that if Amber is to be believed then these two will have much to add to their cause, if they can make it as a couple, supporting and loving each other openly. Zoe can understand Amber’s initial worries as both are from very different cultures. Both are strong willed and opinioned. Both are used to walking a lonely path.

If Helen’s unintentional display is anything to go by then Zoe believes things can only work out for the best. And if she and Jo need to offer them a few tips along the way then that’s no great trouble.

Rocket Joe and Lady Reptilla take that moment to burst onto the CCC Deck in mid argument, sounding as if a pair of children had arrived.

“Well, I think you’ll find…”

“Actually…”

“Hark at Miss Actually…”

Zoe takes a deep breath before announcing to them that the mission’s primary objective had been successfully accomplished and they would be shortly arriving amongst the Great Herd to arrange dialogue between the Matriarchs and the Legion. She notices a momentary flicker of… what was that? Discomfort? Sadness? Whatever it was Zoe realises that Lady Reptilla is not very happy about this missions objectives.

Somehow this knowledge only adds to the feeling of happiness that Zoe is feeling about both Jo’s return from his commission to the Valenian Realms and their imminent return to the Imskian Reserves.
