That same piece of Jurgens/Kesel cover art, from "TalesLSH" 321, finally sold at auction for $1,000. And, yes, it did surpass the reserve price. ... Ah, okay, it was actually $999.95, but what's a nickel among original-art fans?

The buyer is a long-standing Legion original-art maven, long active on LegionPics. This time, though, I really have to wonder at the logic of it all. This is more than I've seen any such Legion art command, including by Giffen and others with far higher recognition in the comics art world.

The Sienkiewicz painting from "LSH" v3 n38 went for about $1,200, as I recall, but that was a finished work standing on its own, and fully framed. This is a single piece of art board with printing instructions scrawled on it in blue pencil.

It's insane, even with my favorite character being involved.

I haven't found Dawnstar art from either of those guys, I'm afraid, except for "DC Comics Presents" 13. Isn't that a dramatic cover? The two ladies are especially sexy. And the story inside is a nicely-plotted Legion encounter with Supes, as well.

I never knew about this!!!! I'm both grateful and aggravated to see this scan.

It's been a while since I've looked into this, but what's the best resource for a list of Legion (even AR) appearances? I need to do some shoppin.

Dean, this list (an executable that will generate a Microsoft Word doc) from John Censullo is the best there is. It only covers up to 1997 though. If you can't access it let me know and I'll e-mail you a copy of the doc.

Actually I take that back. I just downloaded the file again (didn't have a copy at work) and it appears John has updated it through at least June of this year. I think I'll be adding this to the Encyclopedia Galactica section at some point in the future. I've spoken with John in the past and he has given me permission to use his Outpost docs for my website so it shouldn't be a problem but I'll check in with him again.

Um, it didn't work. Some kind of window opened up, which didn't look right, so I closed it. Sorry, my lack of computer skill's showing. If you can email this to me, that'd be great. deanlegion@yahoo.com

Thanks, Scott!

No problem Dean. That window, BTW, was an executable program that John used to house the documents for the Outpost since most of them are quite big.

I've sent it. It'll come from my work address so look for something with my full name from Marriott.

Grey, he's asking for your opinion. I told him you probably didn't get e-mail from LegionPics anymore and didn't know if you were subscribed to Steve Lightle's LegionUP so this was specifically for you.

No problem David. Glad you found your way. This was the best way to get Grey's attention and a wider audience for your great pic.

Frog Kid! Fun name...

That Dawnstar picture is very nicely done. A very dramatic shot.

Glad you're here!

Hi there David, and I like your moniker! (I also am glad to see someone from France. Not everyone in the USA takes part in the political strains of the past year.)

Your rendering of Dawny is superb, especially in showing her emotions. Ecstasy comes across the most, I'd say, more than simply the effort of making such flight and leaving a gravity well. (Not minimal even for someone with such abilities.)

A sense of sheer release, breaking free from gravity, basking in the solar ion winds, all of these could also be seen here for her. I like the curve you've made of her body and legs, and that they're not perfectly parallel or symmetrical with her wings.

A winged-art fan at Pteraphiles recently pointed out that most such art is static, however visually interesting, showing such human(oid)s at rest. Which is more than a little ironic, considering what they should be able to do. You've shown such a sense of motion, and in outer space at that, neither easily done.

It's a pleasure that you thought enough of my opinion to seek it -- thanks. Also to Scott for posting it here. I have indeed left the nearly dormant LegionPics, and hadn't checked traffic in the worthwhile but small LegionUP for a while.

THanks, Greybird!

I knew that you loved Dawnstar, so when I made this drawing, I wondered what would our "Winged specialist" would think of it. [Wink]

This pic was inspired by a drawing made by Greg Laroque, I think in his first issue. Dawny was shown leaving earth, IIRC followed by Wildfire and a Legion ship. It conveyed a feeling of ecstasy-to me anyway- and tried to put it in this pic: Dawny freeing herself from gravity, and returning to her true place, infinite space(that's how I see the character: a free spirit).

The hardest was to find the right mood to draw her. I tried a first time, and it ended a lot more static than I intented it to be(I tried too hard to convey an emotion through my pencils, which gave the complete opposite of what I wanted). The second time was the right one, as I tried to be less controlling of my skill. The composition of the page came through pure instinct(is that sentence correct?).

I want to draw it again, though, because I think it need to be on a larger format, and because I'm not fully happy with my inking.
