Great episode. After reading the comics, I was surprised at the subtlety of the Governer (and liked it). In fact, I wasn't all that shocked by the end. However, my wife, whose never read any of the comics, was shocked in a major way at the ending, so I think it was definitely effective, especially for the non-comic book reading viewers.
I also thought Merle was done really well. He could easily have been presented as totally over the top and cliched and instead brought several different layers to his scenes.
Great slower episode. Next episode looks to be back to the fast pace.
PS - one thing I need them to do is give Michonne some scenes that show her to be the awesome character I love. So far, she's all *glare* and posture.

Agreed on all counts... I really like this interpretation of the Governor... the ending was great... I'd forgotten about that scene from the books...
I want to see Michonne kick some ass too... so far, she's been great, but they need to let her cut loose at some point soon...

Well, it is in keeping with the books, because other than a few "talk to herself Crazy" scenes and moving in on Tyrese, there wasn't much more to her character prior to Woodbury.

TV-Michonne has totes mastered the *glare*, for certain. Dave has a good point-- we seem to be bypassing the "she might be a nutjob" talking-to-herself stuff that made her a character to watch in the early comics appearances.

Yeah, I thought he would have come across much worse. He showed some actual (as close as I think Merle gets) compassion to Andrea regarding her sister.
He could have easily come off as a total nut-job when he saw her, but he seems a little calmer (yet no less dangerous) than he was when we last saw him.
Looking forward to more with him....to see where they take the character.

He's a great actor that can do a pretty nuanced and totally terrifying character (re: Henry, Portrait of a Seriel Killer).

That aquarium scene was in the comics? Haven't read that era in a while, but totally don't recall that. What I was actually expecting to see when the Governor went into that room was Click Here For A Spoilerhis zombie daughter. In fact I called it as how the episode would end to my wife (who's also read the comics) about halfway thru the ep. I sure hope they don't leave that bit out. When he looked at that picture, I was SO sure I was right!
Good scene, though.

I thought the end would be what you were expecting walking into the frame.

Yeah, that's what I was expecting as well.
Looking at the photo, the earlier discussion on making zombies safe to be around... it all seemed to point that way...

So WAS the aquarium thing in the comics? A friend of mine borrowed those trades from me, like, SEVEN MONTHS AGO and hasn't returned them, so I can't look back through them.

It most definitely was, a two page spread even. He drops two of the heads from the copter crash into one of the tanks and then plops down in the easy chair.
