Whoa. My entire world-view is blown.
Just kidding, but thanks for 'fessing up. I've been putting together a "first appearance" index, and that one was driving me batty trying to track it down.

Sorry. I think I pretty much annotated everything that comes from a real issue.
You see, I didn't really set out to make a comprehensive Legion reference at first. I just wanted to write some coherent narrative that made sense of the Valor/Superboy/Glorith/Time Trapper mess - and I figured hypertext would be a great medium. Before I knew it, I had hypertext entries on half the Legion, all of the prominent villains, and a dozen worlds, and it came to be what it is now...but it stayed true to its roots of making sense of a fragmented history. Like, for example, to make sense of the fact that Kid Quantum was never really a humanoid being, but somehow a group with the powers and resources of the Legion accepted him as a Xanthusian named James Cullen. Another example is my entry on "Black Dawn", an event alluded to many times in the TMK era, but never fully described.
Of course, if some later issue were to contradict what I wrote (impossible in that case, though, as I hadn't formally published it until after Zero Hour), I would have amended my entry to fit the "correct history".

Does anyone know of an earlier reference to the names "Luc and Perla Ranzz," than a v.4 text piece?
It just strikes me as odd that the parents of two of the most core Legionnaires should go unnamed for so long. (Then again, preboot, I don't think Saturn Girl's ever were named.)
Thanks in advance for any info.

According to the Cosmic Teams web page, "The names of Ayla and Garth's parents were not revealed until Who's Who #9 (5.91)."

I made up a lot of stuff in there to fill in blanks. As long as it didn't contradict anything actually published (the exception being my re-interpretation of the Time Trapper/Pocket Universe/Superbiy thing) I felt I was allowed.
Which is why, despite it being a tremendously great piece of work, I can't use it. Even my memory fails from time to time, and I can't trust that something I read in your file is something I actually read in the comics.
It's an early version of what we're trying to do with the Legion Wiki, and I would have asked long ago to use what's written in there for the wiki, but I don't know where the material came from, you or the comics. And as much as it pains me to say it, your rewriting and reinterpretation of events is essentially fanfic. (I hold most of the Who's Who in the LSH to be nearly fanfic, since many of the entries were created specifically for that series and never appeared anywhere else, but the names and backstories have become accepted as canon anyway.)
And it always bugged me that you deliberately leave out the v1 reprint series, and renumbered the other series, so that (for example) the Baxter series is called v2 and the Giffen/Bierbaum series is called v3, in the face of convention. But that's just me.

And now for something completely different... can someone with access to The Legion #29 please scan and post the full-page splash where "young" Darkseid meets old pock-marked Darkseid, with the Legion and Darkseid's demons in the background? I think it's page 4. I bought that page from Chris Batista in San Diego and my collection is hopelessly mismanaged to the point where I can't find anything.

Hmmm, I think I must have had the earliest reference then, because I can beat that by a month.
In a text piece in v.4 #17 (cover dated 4.91), there is a reference to Char Burrane Jr. being held in the "Luc and Perla Ranzz" wing of Quarantine.

My concern was the word "created" but the boldface didn't show up well in yellow. Anyhow, I see you fixed that too.

Has anyone got scans of the designs Jason Armstrong did for the 3boot before he was on the book? There's like a few pages of black and white pencil stuff with all notes and whatnot. I may or may not have asked this previously. The drink has made my memory fuzzy.

This is going to sound insane coming from someone who did the anal-retentive work of compiling the thing and attempted to reconcile occasionally contradictory stories into a coherent whole:
DUDE, IT'S ALL FICTION.
Naturally, you're welcome to use or not use whatever you want. But what context of usage are we talking about here? Are you being paid for Legion information and thereby be cheating your customers if it's not 100% accurate and sourced? Are you participating in a Legion trivia contest for cash prizes? So what if "Niles and Esther Cullen adopting the Soul of Antares as part of its disguise" isn't in the books? It does not contradict anything (is your quizmaster going to try and trick you by asking the names of Kid Quantum's adoopted parents, expecting the answer to be "unknown"?) but it makes for a cleaner, smoother (I'd say better, but that could just be my own conceit) overall story. Who can't use that?
As for the volume numbers - in retrospect, I regret that. I guess I didn't realize just how important the reprint series was to people in terms of numbering. I knew it existed, but it never contained any original material, so I didn't think people ever had that in mind if they referred to the first, second or third (or fourth, and now fifth, although the file doesn't go that far) Legion series. I sure know I didn't back then.
