There have been a lot of different versions of the Legion, so this April, we celebrate Legions of Legions! To be specific, there has been a lot of interest in the Legion that is currently appearing in Action Comics. Let's see some works showcasing them. Also, what if the Legion was presented Wildstorm Comics style?

We love brand new submissions (stories, poems, prose, novels, paintings, drawings, photomanips, action figures, statues, busts, micros, etchings, etc.) but we certainly want your existing work posted in the galleries too! Come join us all month long starting on the 1st for the shindig!

A Wildstorm Legion tale;

*********************

The team slowly assembled in the central area they had deemed their ‘meeting room.’

Jon, aka Alkahest, was leaning against a wall, eyes downcast, trenchcoat sagging limply off of him, and might well have been asleep for all anyone could tell, while Brian, also known as Nightwolf, was stalking back and forth, angry about who knows what this time.

One of the teams nominal ‘leaders,’ as much as they had such a thing, walked stiffly into the room. Hanging off of Gigavolt’s arm was his twin sister Allie, also known as G. Across his broad chest, his oversized mechanical arm whirred and clicked as it adjusted to his movements.

A portal in the ceiling irised open and fellow founder, Bladestorm, Rocco Corrini, drifted in, attended by a cloud of metal fragments that slowly orbited him. The metal fragments all smoothly slid onto the harness he wore, until it resembled a suit of ancient scaled metal armor, and he reclined on the ceiling, looking down at the proceedings with his arms behind his head.

Val Armor, known as the Hunter, stalked in and took up station behind Brainiac, who was, as always, seated in front of the monitor boards. Beside him stood a pair of Fission’s ‘duplicates,’ both holding datapads and perusing their contents with interest. Lilliputian stood on one of the datapads lying on the console, tapping it’s keys with her tiny feet.

Brainiac repeated the signal and Shift X flew in wearing nothing but a towel, followed quickly by yet another of Fission’s duplicates, similarly clad, and also leaving a dripping trail.

“Nice of you to show up, boy.” Nightwolf growled and Shift X just smirked at him dismissively.

At some point Mindfire had appeared in the room, and it was unclear if she’d just entered, or simply not allowed anyone to see her previously. Next to her, huddled in conversation, Spectral floated silently, half-submerged in the wall.

Brainiac stabbed a button and the screen lit up with the supermodel features of their benefactor, the billionaire financier who went by the name of Prophecy. “Legionnaires, thank you for your attention.” It was unclear whether or not the screen showed the scene in the room, but she didn’t seem to react to the various states of undress of her audience. “My people have forecast a 92% chance that the Twin Ridge Nuclear Storage Facility will be targeted by unknown forces within the next 24 hours. The material to be stolen will be containment materials, presumably desired by rogue states or entities that wish to fashion their own nuclear weapons.”

She paused to allow this information to sink in, and Bladestorm quipped from his vantage point on the ceiling, “And you, of course, have a financial interest in this not happening.”

Prophecy idly poked at her expensively coiffed and towered platinum blonde hair, ignoring the comment entirely. “Obviously it would be in the best interests of everyone who *isn’t* a terrorist-sponsor to stop these materials from being proliferated. Your team will receive the usual rates for a hazardous assignment, and the standard disavowal protocols are in place.”

Hunter piped up in a business-like tone, “The authorities have not been forewarned?”

“No. We cannot trust their security, so you will have to get in and deal with the situation on your own. As always, avoid unnecessary fatalities, particularly of facility staff or local law enforcement.” Her face turned to Nightwolf, who was glared back at her challengingly, “That means you Brian.”

The feral Legionnaire just bared his fangs in reply, but she’d already turned to Skyfire. “Is this contract agreeable?”

Skyfire looked up to Bladestorm, who just shrugged, and then to Mindfire, who nodded her assent, and agreed. “Hell yeah, let’s go fry some terrorist butt.”

***************************************

Lt. Jim Allon stood his watch with quiet detachment, although he could hear his men grumbling and grousing about the tedium of the night shift and their ‘asshole ell-tee’ not allowing them to break up the monotony by gambling. Nothing every really happened out here in the Dakota foothills, but he wasn’t about to let them get away with sneaking off base to spend time with the reservation girls, or drinking on duty, which their previous Lt. had apparently allowed.

‘That must be why he’s not Lt. anymore,’ Jim thought with some satisfaction.

His reverie was broken by a cut-off transmission, and then the wall behind him exploded. He could feel himself tangled up in a mess, and something somewhere was leaking. He tried to move his arm, but only belatedly realized that the arm in front of him was not his own, and that the fluid dripping onto him wasn’t water, before he saw a shadowy figure pass over him and everything went black.

Flying into view, the Legion could see the explosion, and Bladestorm shouted into his comm, “It’s started! Joe, stay on perimeter and watch for anyone trying to leave with the goods, everyone else, move in!” Shift X peeled back and activated his own jump-pack, shifting his ultra-energies into his sensory faculties, his eyes shining a brilliant green as barely visible scanning beams tracked back and forth as he turned his head.

Gigavolt was the first one in, his sister right behind, jump-packs flaring a dull gold as G’s control over gravity allowed the two to accelerate past their team-mates. He strafed brilliant blue bolts of electricity from his cybernetic limb, creating a dazzling web of electricity over the base and outlining the scene to be a bright as day for a long moment.

In this display, a cloud of smoke and debris, intertangled with broken bodies, could be seen, and a dozen dark-clad figures bounding gracefully across the base stopped to shield their eyes, reacting to this new development.

Mindfire’s telepathic voice slithered like a serpent into their minds, as always feeling like a violation, <They are calling in reinforcements!>

“Hit ‘em hard, boys and girls.” Bladestorm said as his body stopped in midair and he raised his arms. The razored bits of metal that had followed him in a cloud surged forth and swept among the visible men, and cries of pain could be heard. Bolts of electricity came crashing down as Gigavolt added to the carnage, and, still clutching her brothers arm, G used her power to send several leaping figures spiraling out of control, as they attempted unsuccessfully to adjust their own jump-packs to compensate for the unpredictable gravitational shifts she was causing.

A flash of crimson light erupted from mid-base with a sound like the world cracking in half, and out of the thundering tunnel that appeared, new figures arose, as the terrorists post-human ‘reinforcements’ entered the field.

First out of the boom tube was a figure of blinding light, only vaguely man-shaped, and he narrowed as he flew, cutting a path directly through Garth’s mechanical arm, causing electricity to begin pouring out uncontrollably, and sending G veering off, stunned by a lightning strike from her brothers damage limb.

Two female figures dropped next out of the rift, one landing ponderously, cracking the concrete and the other dropping nimbly. They quickly moved into the fray, the smaller silvery one moving like a dancer and ignoring the clouds of razor-edged metal that Bladestorm redirected to attack her, clanging uselessly off of her own armored skin. The larger woman grabbed up a humvee and hurled it effortlessly at Bladestorm, who lazily drifted out of it’s way. The multi-ton vehicle slowed as it approached his airborne form and drifted around behind him picking up speed before it rocketed past him on the opposite side and impacted right where the super-strong woman was standing. She attempted to dodge, but was less successful, as the vehicle adjusted course and caught her square in the back!

Again Mindfires voice hissed inside of their minds, “They have orders to kill the acquisition team, so that we can’t interrogate them!”

The silver figure indeed was now dancing among the black-clad figures that had been felled by lightning or metal blades, and finishing them off. Her silvery talons had grown nearly a foot in length, but could barely be seen under a thick coating of blood…

Hunter seemed to appear in the middle of the carnage, flipping acrobatically out from behind a wall to crescent-kick the silvery assassin in the face. She didn’t even budge, laughing as he fell to the ground from his unsuccessful kick. “Sucker. You’re kung-fu crap is no match for Silverknife!”

Hunter looked up from the ground, strangely unconcerned as a pair of ghostly arms rose from the ground and pulled Silverknife straight down. Already looking away, the martial artist flipped to his feet and ran towards the second female figure, who had just flipped the wreckage of the humvee off of herself and was getting to her feet.

Only Silverknife’s head was now visible, and her scream of outrage had ended. The concrete around her cracked suddenly, and Spectral rose up in front of her seemingly lifeless face. “Oh yeah, well you’re no match for…” she stopped, noticing Hunter already dashing off. “Hey, aren’t we supposed to say something quippy here?”

Hunter flipped over the strongwoman, landing nimbly on the back of the humvee that she’d only recently been trapped under. He watched her track his movement and beckoned for her to ‘bring it.’ “Aaah!” she screamed in frustration and charged his position, to bull straight through the wrecked vehicle, while he leapt clear and out of her way with easy grace. A deadly game of ‘keep-away’ began, with the woman hurling chunks of vehicle at him and him avoiding them, while ever taunting her to pursue.

She came around a corner to find that he was gone, looked up and saw only the red glow of Nightwolf’s eyes. ‘Crap.’ was her last thought before the feral half-vampire descended to feed.
Returning for another pass, Hotlight would have been laughing at how easy this was, had he lungs to do so. Focusing his form once again, he narrowed to a deadly cutting beam of laser-light, and slashed through Garth’s torso again, only to find that something was wrong with his concentration. Gigavolt plummeted to the earth, while G regained her concentration and stopped his fall, causing him to drift lightly to the ground, like a feather, while she likewise descended to tend to her sibling.

It was like a thousand slimy tendrils had wormed their way into his mind, and they were expanding, crushing him aside and taking over. Hotlight cried out as his lightform faded away and he reverted in midair to his handicapped human self, the self he loathed. With a bitter cry, he plummeted to the ground, and landed with a heavy sound.

Still waiting within the red transportal, the Neutralizer spoke unnecessarily to his mindless companion, Golem, “There are too many of them. This is a write-off.”

The background rumble of the Boom Tube suddenly ended, and the silence of it’s passage was startling in it’s own right.

Having located the containment gear that Prophecy had described with his Ultra-Vision, Shift X determined that the enemy had never even breached the building it was contained within.

“Okay, I think we got this. Let’s clear out before the response teams show up, people!” Bladestorm shouted through the comm.

A fresh explosion, or what seemed like an explosion, interrupted their attempts to get clear, as the collapsed building seemed to erupt from within. Staggering out of the wreckage, a colossal figure arose, one that seemed to be composed of the corpses of the dead soldiers who had been guarding the facility!

Behind the figure, oozing from the rubble of the building that they’d been guarding, a toxic slurry of radioactive material seeped forth, and the assemblage of dead flesh also shone with that same sickly greenish glow.

G was right in the monsters path, refusing to leave her injured brothers side, and had only survived the sudden eruption of masonry by stopping several heavy blocks mere inches above her head, and sending them flying off into the distance with her gravitational control.

Hunter and Nightwolf came leaping in from the side, but the lumbering colossus seemed to shrug off their attacks, flailing about wildly, but failing to connect with either of the agile Legionnaires.

A horrific moaning keen, as if from a half-dozen tortured throats, arose from the brute, and Mindfire’s voice pulsed wetly in the minds of her teammates, <It’s confused. Somehow the minds of the soldiers are still alive in that thing! But they are all in horrible pain, and they are lashing out…>

On Shift X’s shoulder, where she’d been playing with his ear, Lilliputian spoke up, “I guess I better go help the Brobs, they managed to find something even bigger and clumsier than they are...” Her tiny jump-pack flaring, the diminutive warrior sprang into action. Flying past her companions, busy trying to keep the lumbering creature busy, Lilly flew directly into the mass of limbs and rubble, trusting to her seal-suit to at least temporarily stave off the radiation and toxins involved. Finding the head of a soldier, she shocked it into unconsciousness with her Volt-Pistol, and flew further into the confusing tangle, stunning as she went.

<Lilly! Don’t stun that one!> came a sudden cry, and Lilly just jerked her gun away in time. She could feel the mass around her no longer moving, and the blood-soaked face in front of her jerked up and looked straight at her. “I, what happened?” For once, Lilly had no idea what to say, fortunately Mindfire came through and the figure’s eyes blurred over as it sank into unconsciousness.

The great figure sank to the ground, and somehow seemed to be moving like fluid around her. Lilly raced out as fast as her jump-pack could navigate as channels of flesh and bone and blood rewove themselves around her, until she was forced to shoot her way out at the end, as skin began to heal over her escape route! Hovering over what had been a tangled mass of bodies and parts of bodies, now only a single humanoid figure, over twelve feet tall, lay on the ground and his sleeping face was the same as the face she’d seen on the person she’d encountered in the middle of the being.

<Whatever that radioactive waste has done, it’s somehow merged the bodies of these soldiers into one! The only one who survived the blast is now the one that remains conscious. The others minds are still in there, but their bodies have been assimilated by his own…>

Brainiac’s voice came over the Comm. “Prophecy anticipates that the scrambled military response will be there within two minutes. Forecasts indicate that a potential new Legionnaire has been encountered, and should be returned to base. Secure the potential and evacuate immediately.”

G started to levitate her brother’s body, but Hunter took hold of him, “I’m a medic Allie. You can trust me.” Hunter lifted the body carefully and took to the air, his own jump-pack straining with the effort, but Bladestorm moved to assist and the two of them accelerated into the distance.

Mindfire and Nightwolf took opposite arms of the Colossus and looked to G. “C’mon G, you’re the only one who can lift this big boy.” Spectral said, snapping her out of her distracted state. “Fine.” Allie said, and with a sudden gesture, the enormous body rose into the air and Mindfire and Nightwolf, joined by Shift X, lifted the great body and moved out into the night.

The SW6 Legionnaires meet Wildstorm's GEN 13.

The mysterious Dominion begins government internships for "gifted youth" sentients across the galaxy. Instead of educating and providing them with opportunities, the Dominion subjects these "Legionnaires" to tests in order to harness their power for their own legion/army. When shy Laurel Gand suddenly manifests perhaps the strongest powerset yet (as well as the beauty and body that goes along with it), she manages to motivate several other subjects to escape with her.

With the help of the scarred mercenary known only as 'Brande', the youth retreat to the beautiful world of Ventura. There they establish a home and a purpose: to band together against the Dominion and seek out & protect other gifted youth. So was born ... Sw 6, the surviving sixth generation of Dominion test subjects.

 -

Laurel Gand is perhaps the smartest of the group, which she attributes to all the studying she did with an old flame from Colu. Despite her attractive physique, the super strong lass is happier curled up with a good book than a good looker. To her horror, she always seems to lose articles of clothing whenever the team is in battle. She is the unofficial leader of Sw 6, taking the unimaginative name of ... GAND. (Gen 13's Fairchild)

Ayla Ranzz's long list of bad habits is the result of a life of tragedy. A simple farm girl from a tight knit family, she lost both her brothers in the accident that gave her the mysterious ability to cancel gravity. Her tough act hides the fact she has low esteem, and she is known to cling to her teammates. Early in the team's career, she stumbles across and adopts an alien pet dubbed 'Koko'. Another day in the interesting life of ... GOSSAMER. (Gen 13's Freefall)

Andrew Nolan just wants to have fun. Though fearless, he shirks responsibility whenever he can in favor of partying with the ladies. He doesn't seem to be fazed by the fact his face is so scarred that he's forced to wear a mask to fit in with society. Though he chooses to not act like the brightest man in the star system, he has an impressive secret intellect. Andrew was born a mutant able to transform his body into a living iron, an act made easier when he's in contact with the substance stationed on his belt. Not feeling creative with a codename, he goes instead by the name of his favorite music genre ... HEAVY METAL. (Gen 13's Grunge)

Dirk Morgna was born into a life of priviledge, but still he searches for a different kind of fame: to be the galaxy's most hailed rock musician. A betrayal by his father's worker led Dirk to being trapped in a radioactive chamber, which gave him his fiery plasmic powers. Now Dirk flies through the skies as the hero ... INFERNO. (Gen 13's Burnout)

Danielle Foccart is stubborn when it comes to what she believes in. That rallying force now serves her well behind the cause of Sw 6. After being infected with a rare techno virus, she discovered upon recovery that she had gained the ability to produce electricity which lets her override machines. Danielle has decided to take the name ...HAYMAKER. (Gen 13's Rainmaker)

Their mentor and supplier is a man of mystery, though it's obvious he's had prior experience with the Dominion and doesn't care for them. What they don't know about him is that he was born J'Onn Brande, who was experimented on as well as a youth by the Dominion. Now with the gift of telepathy, he opts not to use it for fear of the power spiralling out of control. To make up for this, he is armed for any situation. He shoots first and shoots some more later ... BRANDE. (Gen 13's Lynch)

Sw 6's home/headquarters needs a lot of work which they can't always give it. Which is why Brande has brought on a housekeeper. His tough love and dedicated work ethic keeps those lazier Sw 6ers in line. When it's revealed that he's actually an android, the team is shocked ... but continues to love him like the supportive butler he is. He's also loaded with an internal howitzer, so be careful when you don't clean up your dishes around ... MARLA. (Gen 13's Anna)

Here's a very rough sketch, very roughly colored, but I felt like it needed the color because in the black and white sketch, he looked too much like how I draw Ultra Boy.

Dean!
Doesn't your Garth costume look a lot like the current Frank outfit for him that we've seen in Adventure?

Sleeveless, white diaper effect, blue thigh boots, even the hair is somewhat similar.

Amazing!
I love your Legion tatoo.

Well, I'm glad you think so, because it was indeed my rendition of that version of Garth. [Big Grin]

I actually haven't done much sketching of this version. So much to do, so little time!

Thanks for the comment!

Hmm, maybe this is where I should've posted this.

A list of ideas I came up with for like, alternate reality Legionnaire pin-ups, like they had in Legion of Super-Heroes #100, and I'd like some feedback and suggestions, please.

*Princess Phoenix: Projectra as the Phoenix Force's host. This would be her Threeboot incarnation, given the new spin that Jim Shooter gave on her powers, giving her the ability to tap into the backbrain, or id, of individuals, and gaining new strength and senses from the leftover ids of all those who died on Orando. Imagine it, a spoiled, vengeance-minded princess, now the avatar for the personification of psychic energy. Why stop at destroying the United Planets and the Legion, when she can destroy the universe. And why should she stop at that as well?

*Thom the Barbarian: Star Boy as barbarian hero with Dream Girl as concubine. A dungeons & dragons spin on Thom's Pre-Crisis, older counterpart, wearing a loincloth matching his star field outfit, and a sword that can cut through gravity, while also reeling from the memories of the first person he killed in self defense.

*Ally the Werewolf Hunter: Lightning Lass as Buffy-style werewolf hunter with TW as her 'Angel'. Ally watched her older sibling and twin brother murdered by a pack of werewolves when she was little, and ever since she's been a delinquent. Years later she learns that she is the "Anointed", to wipe out werewolves. Shrinking Violet's her Willow, and Brainy's her Giles.

*Phantom Girl and her emerald dragon, Jo: Tinya in a white-Shadowcat outfit with Jo as Lockheed, a little dragon with a hoop earring. Inspired from a picture of an alternate Shadowcat who wore a blue version of Tinya's uniform.

*Teen Legion: If the Legion started in the 21st Century and the Teen Titans in the 31st.

*Morningstar: Dawnstar in colonial America. From the same colonial-era universe I had imagined with versions of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, Dawny would be an aid, partner, or sidekick towards this world's Wonder Woman. She gained her wings and powers when she was blessed by the native Gods her tribe worshiped, before the white man tried to wipe them out for being "sinners".

*Live Wires: Legion as punk grunge rock band.

*Lydda, Mistress of the Dark: Lydda in an Elvira role, the host of a horror comic. Delivering jokes and narrating stories alongside Konk, the floating head living inside her crystal ball. I mean, Lydda's already got the hair for it.

*Mirror, Mirror Monstress: Monstress is "normal" and everyone else looks like the Hulk. This can also be used for a Legionnaire power-switch issue, with Monstress gaining someone else's power and they getting the Hulk treatment in return.

*The Invisible Kid: Lyle as one of those direct-to-video kid's movies from the 1990s as a boy who turns invisible. You know, he tries to make it for the science fair, tests it on himself, then decides to mess around, not realizing he can't change back yet. Of course it involves the girl, or boy, he's got a crush on, helping his parents fix their marriage, screwing around with the local bully, and messing up some thugs, yadda yadda yadda...

*Lover's Lane: Jo and Tinya as the lovers in the infamous "Hook" urban legend. This doesn't have to necessarily be an alternate reality, just a dream, or nightmare, or it really could happen.

*Sumo Timber Wolf: Kinda self-explanatory, though 3Boot style Brin would work best. Same wild hair, clawed hands, toeless boots, and somewhat psychotic disposition. Only, y'know, fat, now with a bulky physique to go with his strength and to add an unexpected bonus to his agility, turning him into a three-hundred pound, rampaging berserker with the acrobatic skills of Batman. Also kind of my way of evening things out after what I did to Jo in the try-out fics.

*Nightmare on Naltor Avenue: Dream Girl against Freddy Krueger. Something of a crossover, actually, with Kruegr attempting to infiltrate Nura's mind, making it the first time he's ever invaded someone's mind with the power to see the future. What kind of effect could it have on tomorrow?

*Lightning Siblings: Garth as 1940s style Indiana Jones explorer and Ayla as "good girl" secret agent, inspired from a JLA story written by Grant Morrison, the two go up against their albino older brother, an agent for the Axis, and his girlfriend, an esper who gained psychic abilities from alien tissue implants.

*Emerald Dragon: Ultra Boy as a 1930s pulp comics hero, who frequently fights a femme fatale named the Spider. He dates socialite Tina Wallace, not knowing she's also a hero, the Apparition.

*The Alchemist: Inspired from the Elseworlds JSA: The Liberty Files, where in the 1940s the heroes work for the government under names such as "The Bat", "The Clock", "The Tornado", "The Star". This one is Jan.

*The Gardner: Chlorophyll Kid under Liberty Files heading, I wanted the name to still sound dumb since he's a Sub.
*The Shadow: Yes. Shadow Lass.

*The Esper (Esper Lass. I wanted to throw a villain in there)

*School Spirit (Featuring Rainbow Girl as a student in a secluded, haunted boarding school)

*Ferro Lass (female Ferro Lad from the gender-reversed earth)

*The White Witch: She's indeed white, from a Nazi-variation of the Legion called the Axis of Super-Heroes, from the world of Earth-10. Inspired by today's recent issue of Justice Society of America.

*Diamond Dutchess: A good version of the Emerald Empress, from Earth-3. She's a member of the Fearless Five.

This was a prize I won for a caption contest. I asked her to draw the cartoon Legion founders meeting their comic selves and I pretty much imagined what their reactions would be. She added in the bit about Imra's hair.
